But life is a journey towards death and I feel like this song kind of puts that into perspective in the context of typical "follow your heart" messages found in popular songs. It's additionally poignant in that throughout GITS, Batou is always following Motoko faithfully, almost like the relationship Batou has with his dog, but she's his owner asking him to follow her, not in a playful pet/owner sense, but in a bigger context of life, raison d'etre, modus operandi, etc. Motoko's cyber powers make her like a demigod and the impact she has on Batou has changed his life's direction. He's following her.

歌詞を和訳してみて、これが草薙素子の本心だと思ったら、泣いてしまった
ググるったら、この原曲は1989年に伊藤君子がリリースしたようですね。
さらに調べてみると、英語詞は1982年にHerbert Kretzmerによって書かれたようです。
本来、映画「イノセンス」とは無関係ですね。
でも確かに素子の立ち位置というか存在自体を表現する歌詞になっています。
素子は「follow me」と言わずネットの海に消えちゃったけどさ。
ジブリの鈴木のおっさんが押井さんと組んでイノセンスを制作することになったとき、鈴木さんが「この曲を入れてほしい」と言って持ってきたもので、どうも、鈴木さんがこの曲のことがお気に入りだったから、という理由らしい。純粋にいい歌だし、あの映画のEDに最もふさわしい曲だと思っている。
