Best video on this topic out of the maný I have seen. It solved my fret buzzing problem without touching any fret. I specially liked the way you explained truss rod adjustments. Thanks a lot.
Capo at the 1st fret, hold the string down at the 12th fret by hand, and measure the actual relief with feelers gauges work a lot easier for this, which I am sure you knew that already.
If you decrease string tension by loosening the tuning key the string goes flat but if you do it at the tailpiece is doesn't? And if you decrease the tension shouldn't the neck relief increase?
Hi, The neck relief tuto is nice , thanks but sorry, the tail story doesn't make sens to me: if you lower the tail piece -> yes it will increase the tension of your string and also resulting in a higher tuning -> you're out of tune ( just tri it ,push on your string between de tail and bridge, you'll here the difference.) what will you do then? well you turn down the tuning mechanic to put your string in tune resulting in the same tension between your nut and bridge as before. Why do you thing string factories are giving you tension values of each string or gage?
Does raising the tail piece affect the tone of the Les Paul please? I do mine that way because you're correct, they play better but I had a good tech tell me it will reduce the tone if the tail piece is not touching the body. He said to run the strings on top of the tail piece. Great video. Thank you.
ua-cam.com/video/GaJjjVKcXJM/v-deo.html you might find this useful. There's difference in feel, but tone...i never noticed a big difference. I do this just because it helps me avoiding broken strings at the bridge
I'm confused. You say you can get more or less string tension by adjusting the tail piece height. Seems to me, more or less string tension would greatly affect tuning. If one were to set the tail for less tension wouldn't that make the tuning flat or increasing the tension would make the tuning sharp. I don't get it????The reason some players wrap their strings over the top of the tail piece is for tuning purposes. It lessens the break angle of the strings coming over the bridge and saddles. In turn that lessens the friction between the strings and saddles. With less angle on the strings, there is less chance a string will hang up on the saddle as one is trying to tune or when bending strings. We've all heard that little ping or clink sound coming off the bridge when tuning up or bending strings. That sound comes from the string hanging up on a saddle then all of sudden it lets go and that string goes a bit out of tune/ flat..TINK! Over the tailpiece string wrap will help stop that problem.
The reason you dont get it is because its a load of bullshit,,, it does not work,, if it takes 100lbs of pull on a string to tune it to pitch its gonna take the same amount regardless of where the tail is... i had a Burny SG that felt very tight when trying to do bends, i scratched my head for weeks wondering what it was... the tail piece was one of the suggestions i was given to correct it..... it didnt work, not one little bit, i was then told to wrap the strings over the top of the tail piece..... that didnt work either.. i dropped down to 8 gauge strings from 9s to make it easier to play.... i eventually sold the guitar with no fix.
If you raise the tailpiece higher, there is less contact and tension between the string and the bridge. It doesn't mean that the string would be less tight-- since then the pitch would not be right-- but applying side pressure on the string (bending) would be much easier. However, it can lead to more buzz.
Paul Kasper i don’t believe that cause you have to re string and then sought out the neck relief then check the adjustments, if it’s to much or to low you don’t then re string and then do it again you’ll go through like 6 packs of strings just to set it
I RELEVED A MUSIC STORE OF ABOUT TWELVE 1959 LESSLY PAULS ONE NIGHT, I SOLD THEM, NOW I CAN BUY A SOUTH SEA ISLAND AND RETIRE - THE GUY IN THE VIDEO HAS NO IDEA HOW TO RELIEVE SOMEONE OF A LESSLY PAUL!
You made it very clear, best camera angles and explanation out there.
I can't thank you enough.

would have loved to have these videos in 2010. What a time to be alive. THANKS!
Checking relief from the 12th fret to the 1st (and not from the body joining fret) has been a revelation! So much easier!! Thanks!
The first thing he said was exactly what I've been searching the answer for, simple explanation. Nice.
I’ve watched tons of these videos...no good.yours is the best I’ve seen.crystal clear, thank you so much
this video is maybe old but gold! Thx for sharing!
How can it be so hard to find a good video like this?? This is the only video that explains it as it should be.
THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE ON THE ISSUE SPECIALLY THE HIGH AND LOW STRINGS EXPLANATION. THANKSSSSS

Say any shit you want about the video being old it is still better than today's tutorials...
Thank you very much, Joe! At the time, S-VHS was the best option available:)
All of them? 😮
Usually when you do a couple turn on truss rod you wait a couple more days before adjust again in this case full on throttle speed.
Oh.. another video from 1983 on youtube. Great Job. Please next time in 8mm please!
relief should be set in playing position. the problem with this neck rests is they push the neck forward which changes pitch of the strings.
THANKS A LOT FOR THAT VIDEO!ALL THE BEST!
thank you . you made my life easier

Well done!
If the angle of the tailpiece is too low and the strings are touching the bridge, you can damage the bridge over time.
I clicked hear to get neck relief now my shoulder is starting to hurt too.
Thanks,very helpful video.

Paul Shaw Wrong. You're not Luthier. this is 100% true. Maybe take up banjo. 😂😂

great info
Thank you!
What is the tool and size you use to adjust the truss rod?
A set of small allen wrenches should do the job.
:)
You have to restring your guitar each time you turn the screw of your Truss Rod. Instead of that it's impossible to get a perfect adjustment.

"The neck is straight, but not too straight". My girlfriend is pregnant, but not too pregnant. Either it's straight or not.
Clearly it wouldn't be perfectly straight cos the notes wouldn't fret.
The necks straight but it has a slight bow otherwise the strings are gonna hit the frets when you pluck them and create buzz
