Thank you for letting me wander through your garden. I just moved 600 miles away from my trees. Next weekend I get to go back and get them. I miss my trees.
A very wise man once said, a man who doesn't have patience doesn't like what he is doing. Any person who doesn't like caring for plants should get a Pinus artificialis, because all living things require care. Like you, I love every part of caring for my plants.
@@mikealmere70 This is a quotation from over fifty years ago. I don't remember the name. The Ficus Religiosa looks good in the new pot, that was quite the repot. Wall-e looks happy to have his tree back ! Great to see those cuttings in your green house come back, awesome !
Very good... as always rich in content my friend Nigel ... I love to see your love and dedication to all kinds... I have some copies of the first plant ficus and even I will update one of them next Saturday and I hope you see ... great week and have fun...
It’s amazing how miniature it is even though it’s over 25 years old! This is the type of bonsai I want to have in the future! Awesome video I have really enjoyed this three part series!
Wall-e’s ficus continues to do well, cannot believe it’s been five years since the last repot that’s incredible!! Jade looks good in that new pot and will recover well in your care it was a good strong cutting so it’ll be fine! Great video as always!
Hi Nigel, You, Scott and Tom take care of each other pretty good. I love that Greenhouse Scott built. He did a great job. Waiting to see yours when you are done. Those tiny little pots are great.
Great work on this tree. Really like the new pot that you gave it. And, the reunion.....interesting. So glad to see that cutting has sprouted - the Lyrata. Love the gardenia. I like the flowers so much I just added a miniature for my garden space. What nice gifts from your viewer. That new jade looks fantastic. And how nice to receive those mini pots. WOW! Can't believe you are composting those jade cuttings. I would have kept them until I discovered that the mother plant had actually survived. (But I understand how it is with keeping "too many plants/cuttings". Many gardeners have that issue.) Enjoyed watching this video. Can't wait to see what you will have in store for us in the next one.
Thanks so much Pat, yes it was hard composting the cuttings, but I have a good assortment of Jades now. My viewers spoil me with gifts, I love it though!
from the start I saw a tiny bud under the side branch and was hoping it mad it and it did! I liked the repots of all the trees in this set of three. I too learnt a few years ago to make separate screens I had problems with a few of my trees. good video.
If you disturb jade roots when repotting its recommended to not water the soil for 2 weeks that only invites chances of root rot and if you defoliated it too - make it 3-4 weeks
That little Ficus looks so much better in that drum pot! Btw I've just heard this a few days ago but the triangle on the drum pot should indicate the front of the tree. Maybe something to remember for the next repotting.
Do you have any recommendations for species to put in those micro bonsai pots? I have some pots the same size and have struggled with keeping a tree in such a small pot from drying out.
Dear Nigel, very informative repotting process and enjoyed every bit of thought process shared throughout the video. Thanks! Btw FYI the drum pot that you flipped over with the chop was made in China by the famous Yixing Manufacturer. 中国宜興 refers to China Yixing 鮑荷芳 is the pot maker or assistant.
Wow , those pots are tiny , great video as always Nigel , love your passion , and cool the ficus with that tiny bit of green on him , cool job waiting to see if it would happen ! , hey Scott can you send me some Teltley Tea please 😁👍, we used to get it down I here in Oz , now it’s Australian tetley , which isn’t quite as nice , I’m currently going through a Box of blended Yorkshire😍, still waiting for spring to kick in properly , can’t wait - you’ve been so inspiring this year Nigel ! Thanks
It is very difficult to transform a root bound tree to a shallow root system for bonsai, I would suggest cutting just a few roots with each repotting and over many years you should be able to reduce the root system for a shallow smaller pot.
Nigel, I recently transplanted a redwood sapling grown from a seed from its first container to a larger pot. The roots had coiled around the base of the first and I trimmed them a bit before replanting it. I hope I didn’t seal its doom when I trimmed the roots. I left a fair length of taproot and feeders. It’s gradually turning brown on the lower needles and working its way up. Any advice on how I might save my sapling?
・I think you can recycle that moss. I once saw an interesting method in a Japanese UA-cam video where they just cut off / trimmed the top of the moss, put the cut off moss in a bit of water to clean it, and then just applied it with a spoon on top of the soil. The moss becomes very even this way. ・I wondered if you could use a different particle size for such small trees and if it could beneficial. For this you'd need another finer sifter though. ・I always wondered about all the plant material you get in the mail! I thought customs are usually fairly strict - especially at airports - but in Canada they either don't care so much or it's not that bad actually. I hope you survived that zombie apocalypse well! Great little tree :)
I would never cut all The green of any plant you are so brave i like The way you handle jade plants i am just not brave like you i only do Half The plant at any time
I bought a house in Feb. I just discovered a ficus religiosa four feet high in the corner of the yard. Not a good space for a 90 foot tall Bodhi tree. Can I turn it into a bonsai ? I feel it is sacred.
May I ask what happened to your ficus over temple? I see it everytime you walk into the greenhouse and it doesn't look so good, so I'm curious. Thank you :) Also an amazing video to watch today, thank you :)
It doesn't look good, I think it has died, the borers did quite a number on the trunk. I was hoping a shoot would come up from the base, but nothing yet.
@@dk2614 yeah I guess that harsh reality of things, you learn from your mistakes but damn killing a tree I raised for a couple of years would be heartbreaking
If you think you've cut off too many roots, treat the plant like a freshly made cutting. put the plant in a shady spot, partially defoliate it and water carefully until you see new growth starting. If you've left any roots at all, it should regrow if you treat it with care. Eventually, you will learn how many roots you can safely cut off. There are two ways to learn. First, listen to someone wiser. Second, make mistakes, figure out what you did wrong, stop doing that, then make more mistakes. When you stop making mistakes, have a cemetery plot ready.
Keep in mind that Nigel is often VERY risky when he's cutting roots. They take longer to recover but he gets through with it because he knows how to care for his plants. If you're a beginner, take off a little bit less and you should be fine.
I think it depends on what microclimate you have, what soil you use and how you care for your trees. Nigel knows that in his situation he can do this kind of pruning, and the tree will survive, but it’s more about knowing your plants and what can you do.
Fun fun! 😀 I almost couldn't believe that little tree is around 25 years old 😯
Those micro pots your friend sent are so sweet.

True, it has just one, I hope it does well, I have them in out of the rain tonight!
I like that you are showing that even Nigel Saunders makes mistakes! By that I mean about forgetting to repot for 5 yrs!

The perfect pot for the tree nigel!!

The new Japanese pot looks great with this little tree. I thought the roots would be crazier than that after 5 years!
Thanks Xin, a viewer said it is a Chinese pot? I'm not sure!
Such a crazy little tree. It must have slipped through the cracks in getting some love.
Poor little tree, I hope it likes it's new home!

When the sirens went off, after you said you are going to "cut back" on the amount of cuttings you have, and you have to compost them.
