Your candor is always appreciated. It is helpful to listen to you walk through your analysis of what has led to a tree's issues and how you are going to solve it. that encourages the rest of us. Its always difficult to have to downsize a collection but you always seem to make wise choices so we wait to hear/watch what happens. Thanks!!
I feel your pain. What a remarkable success rate despite space limitations and climate. You squeezed a small farm into your home. 😆 Your resourcefulness is part of the charm of your channel.
Nasty business, scale. Glad you caught it and are getting rid of it in time. Meticulous work getting rid of them. You are right, a never ending story with scale. 4/26 Arbor Day here in the states. Happy Arbor Day, Nigel!!! Great work on this tree.
I really appreciate your concern about this ficus religiocia as I am also following your this particular bonsai. I also have this plant as bonsai in my collection. Similar problem of scale insects was faced by me but I could come out of it and it's completely free of scale insects now. I also used the same treatment of soap and water but I covered the soil completely with plastic sheet before spraying so that no insect could cscpe into the soil. I also repeated the process every 15 days for tow months. This way you kill the insects foom the newly hatch eggs. As only insects insects can be killed by spraying soap and water not the eggs. And these insects can produce eggs only when they are of 20 days. Hence to get rid of them the process needs to be replaced. I think it might help you for other plants which were kept in near vicinity to this plant.
Oh Nigel.... I feel this so much! This video most certainly helped me to, not feel so alone in the futile work removing bugs. The soap and water treatment is doing as much harm as the bugs. So one week I'll do soap and water and the next week just water. It truly feels like there are more bugs now then when I started clearing the trees. For me Thrips are my Nemesis. The more you do, the more immune they become to treatment and they come back with higher numbers each time. I'm at the point of just trying to achieve survival until it's warm enough to get them outside. I will keep the trees I have, but I'm going to think ten times before I get another indoor tree. I will certainly be leaving trees out longer in fall. I love the trunk on that Religiosa! And the temple, oh my goodness!! Thank you for this video Nigel!💚❤
I have just had my first experience with scale, and I have somenapentes that are looking pretty rough, so I hope it's not thrips! I really am surprised at how tenacious scale is though.... tough to get rid of!
It's helpful to experience your struggle with too many plants. I've resisted starting bonsai due to my tendency to go gung-ho. I had limited myself to 4 house plants which are now five plus two new bonsai pots & plans to start trees. That's it. 🤞
I made a temple too back when you did. It has a Morton Bay Fig that self-seeded growing on it. It went crazy this southern summer and has aerial roots all over and looks really great. It was a good idea to do that with plasticine molds.
Oh the good old problem of having too many trees... 😅 The space I have available is also shrinking slowly... I "fortunately" don't have too many tropicals or mediterranean trees (yet), but those increased in numbers recently as well, so space is actually already fairly limited. I just really enjoy having all these different species... I hope with some more arranging etc. you can fit everything into the plantroom better! It'd be sad if you had to give away trees you've already worked on for some time. Hopefully the Ficus will bounce back after the careful treatment!
Awesome information Nigel.... I think it depends on the species of ficus and the conditions..but that's a nice debate I'd love to have comparing climates and growing conditions... Awesome work my friend 🎉🎉🎉
Ficus religiosa has it in their characteristics they grows and gets die back suddenly...i had felt it with my own religiosa and i live in the Home of the Religiosa INDIA...
Yeah, such a sad video. Let's hope it'll improve over summer! I was thinking maybe a self-made timber construction would be a good intermediate solution for a pot? Like how people often put collected trees inside or as a growing pot. Iirc you used to have a few trees inside them, too. Could be worth it to get the tree back to health
Nigel , when we get ficus berries in the growing stage of a bonsai , should we remove them to save energy for branch and leaf growth or leave them , also share the removing method if needed .. and would it affect any growth for future branches ? Would it damage the buds that will grow in the future from the nodes where the berries are growing.
Yes, any flowers and fruit will take energy away from growing leaves and branches. I would just snip off the fruit with scissors to avoid damaging any dormant buds!
Negative video?? I don’t think that it was negative. In fact, I think your default is positivity, sir! I appreciate all your experience and your authenticity. We all get the pests, and it's good to learn how to deal with them! Cheers!
I think your theory of vertical roots is correct, as these can be seen growing vigorously on walls, intact it’s impossible to uproot them once established
Namaskara Nigel Sir... how you are able to grow tropical plants (like for example Hibiscus, Ficus Religiosa & Rumphii) in canada region?? But we not able to grow your plants like Wisteria, Japanese Maple, Trident Maple, Canadian Maple, Apple etc in Southern part of Bhārat (India) tropical region ?? Why? or its impossible as these plants need Snowy, winter climate for 2 to 3 months every year ???
@@TheBonsaiZone ohh yeah, good point Nigel Sir. lol refrigerate the trees , to give winter like 🥶feel in warm climate 🥵like in south India..& such big refrigerator not available , in case if available also it will be tooo much expensive🤦♂ & its difficult to setup an winter 🌨❄room to grow those plants in south India 🌞🔥🌧☔region !!
Hey Nigel. If you would ever be interested in Goji bonsai, let me know. Where I live in BC we have goji plants growing everywhere and they are invasive. They make super cool bonsai. I would be willing to collect one for you.

Have had a ficus for several years and just started watching these, I’m so glad to be able to care for it better. You’re like Bonsai Bob Ross!

Those temple roots are out of control! Can't wait to see you bring it out into the greenhouse for work 😊
Me too, it's so cool to look at! I'll be doing some root selection and top pruning the trees!!
Reminds me of a miniature version of the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya. Very inspiring Nigel. 💟☮️☸️😎🕊️🎵🎶🎶🌄🌙✨🌝

Yes, growing trees in a cold climate is always a challenge!!!
You are definitely the master at ficus growing. Can't wait till you bring the temple out to work on.
Yes, I can't wait to get the temple in the greenhouse, it needs root selection and top pruning!!!
Ficus religiosa is a great bonsai material❤❤❤
hello from Germany
It's helpful to experience your struggle with too many plants. I've resisted starting bonsai due to my tendency to go gung-ho. I had limited myself to 4 house plants which are now five plus two new bonsai pots & plans to start trees. That's it. 🤞
New to this channel, my girlfriend thinks you sound like Michael Scott.
Love these videos!
Yes, I've heard that!!! Lol!
Love the channel! Wish we could see the plant room more over the winter. Anyway, sending love from Chicago!
Oh yeah... and the roots on the temple!!!! Wow! Like some kinda science fiction creature!
Yes, some of them are gripping the temple really well! Some root selection will be coming in spring, and the pruning of the trees!
I made a temple too back when you did. It has a Morton Bay Fig that self-seeded growing on it. It went crazy this southern summer and has aerial roots all over and looks really great. It was a good idea to do that with plasticine molds.
Thanks, temple plantings are so cool!!!
Don't worry Nigel, you're not alone with "scaleys" my lemon tree has also too.
A never ending battle!!
The other day i was thinking if you sold trees or merchandise i would buy some. Something to think about i am sure others would purchase stuff too.
Oh the good old problem of having too many trees... 😅
The space I have available is also shrinking slowly... I "fortunately" don't have too many tropicals or mediterranean trees (yet), but those increased in numbers recently as well, so space is actually already fairly limited. I just really enjoy having all these different species...

Thanks, I think I'm going to expand to use more of the basement in the winter, I've got to make more room!!!
I think a repot is in order to diagnose the deep pot theory. The bugs could also be a culprit?
I think both are factors for sure!!
Awesome information Nigel.... I think it depends on the species of ficus and the conditions..but that's a nice debate I'd love to have comparing climates and growing conditions... Awesome work my friend 🎉🎉🎉
Good point!
Ficus religiosa has it in their characteristics they grows and gets die back suddenly...i had felt it with my own religiosa and i live in the Home of the Religiosa INDIA...

2 steps backwards and one step forward!
I think your theory of vertical roots is correct, as these can be seen growing vigorously on walls, intact it’s impossible to uproot them once established
Thanks, that is what I have observed also!!!
That root is really crazy 😂
It sure is, it grew from nothing to that in one winter!!!

We can add heat here, but cooling a tree in a warm climate is more difficult! You would need to refrigerate the trees!

Thanks Jason, my wife has a nice Goji plant and she will be giving me some cuttings, the berries taste so good!!!
O have some of my Ficus trees root over rock in shelow pots, and they grow well. I think the problem is pests.
Yes, pests are definitely part of the problem, also climate and I think the too shallow pot!
Hi Nigel ,it's a TREE alright 😮
Yes, barely!!
👍👌👌
I lika your ficusa - because I can't think of another funny joke lol
Can the scale insects live without plants around? Maybe you need to treat the plant room itself? Curious.
They seem to just exist on the trees, but I'm sure they crawl from plant to plant, a spray down of the benches wouldn't hurt!!
"Problem, reaction, solution" 😋
That's a good summary!!!
hello
Gotta grow a sacrifice root into the gravel!
Yes, that would do it!!!
Foist
Jade 🌳🌲🌵
Is that classified as gigantic bonsai?? 😂😂
It's big for my collection, but not very big compared to most show trees!
Hello
