      There have been numerous highly competent people running for president in the past thirty years. Your brand of political cynicism is popular these days, but it often comes with a very unrealistic idea of how democracy works - collaboration and compromise between people in power who simply need to be well-informed, respect expertise, diplomatic and intelligent enough to distinguish fact from fiction.

      I both highly agree, and highly disagree.
      If we’re just talking the last 10 years, or even the last 20, we have had either presidents that are far too emotional, to the point of affirming radicalism, or presidents that compromise to such a degree, they become party-puppets rather than autonomous, well-educated leaders that draw upon their studies. They’re too forged by political status rather than actual progress, though that’s not their fault as individuals. That’s more of an issue with populist politics, as well as political nepotism/traditionalism. Prior to that though, I would agree. Nixon just had bad luck when he was caught, otherwise, he was actually a fairly regular and fairly positive president. Not super forward-thinking, but a very solid leader. Post-Nixon was basically.... fairly strong all the way up to the end of the 90s, though Reagan set some fairly frightening precedents in terms of populism over efficacy. And Bush Jr. not always as bad as people say, but still mostly poor, especially in regards to the precedent set in how interventionism is conducted, how we handle oil shortages, and implementing the start of a Surveillance State. Obama did not help in that regard. Trump and Biden have ultimately ignored the Surveillance issue, keeping focus away from it. As for their issues of choice, admittedly, they had brought light to issues like immigration and gun violence, but I’m not sure if they really had very strong reforms in that regard. Immigration reform will be a long , gradual, and arduous process, so we’ll have to wait and see on that.
      On the other hand, gun rights, in the public space, has very weak discussions. Moreover, abortion is strangely lacking right now in terms of grounded conversations that are rational and runs too much on emotion, and no president ever seems to address this.
      That’s a massive problem that somewhat has marred every presidency though. Pathos over Logos in rhetoric. It’s just becoming worse with time.

    Why don't we ever listen to what presidents warn about in their farewell addresses? Washington warned against political parties, Eisenhower warned against the military industrial complex.

    • @youtubeviolatedme7123
      @youtubeviolatedme7123 5 місяців тому +9

      To be fair, political parties probably do more good than harm, since it's usually an indication that candidates are actually trying to compete with each other to keep their party in power instead of making false promises and disregarding public opinion. I actually think one of the major causes of Mexico's problems come from the fact that there's really only one major political party there.
      I agree, however, that the military industrial complex has become problematic. I don't think it's as simple as divesting funds into other sectors, since there are so many jobs and foreign relations that depend on the American military, but I do think the economy would likely improve if some of that money went into healthcare and/or education.

    Fun Fact: In the election of 1920, Eugene Debs, an openly socialist third party candidate, ran most of his presidential campaign from a jail cell and got over 3% of the popular vote. Great video. I gotta say, I understand where Teddy was coming from in 1912 though, and I don't think it was entirely ego driven. Conservation was the "baby" of his presidency and Taft completely abandoned him there. Roosevelt had called it the single most important issue and created multiple national parks, established the U.S. Forest Service, created bird refuges, and set aside millions of acres of land to be federally protected. He's pretty much the sole reason the west wasn't completely torn down by timber companies. Taft promised TR that he would keep up his legacy here and protect federal land, but then completely abandoned his promise and began selling this land off to for-profit companies. Roosevelt was (understandably) pissed and couln't believe that the guy he had hand-picked as his successor would betray him like that. So while it's unfortunate that TR running led to Wilson's election, I blame Taft much more than Roosevelt. Teddy was just trying to protect his legacy and ensure that his work wasn't all for nothing.

This would be an exercise better suited to college level studies as I don’t think high school students need to know every single losing candidate to every single election.

    I think an interesting option for the election of 1920 that didn't get mentioned in the stream would be Parley Christensen of the farmer-labor party. After WW1 agriculture was hit by lower wages and prices which would have hurt a lot of people who lived off of that out west. I feel like I would have been sympathetic to that cause even though their party wasn't super popular in 1920. Christensen was a form member of Teddy's Progressive Party as well. If I had been voting from my home state of Montana back then, I feel that would have been my choice. Kinda like a precursor to the 1924 election bid of Robert La Follette and his running mate, Burton K. Wheeler (then senator from Montana).

    Interesting, but I was hoping you would break down their platforms and explain why specifically you would have supported them. I’ve been looking for something that examines the platforms of each president and can’t find anything. Even individual documentaries don’t tend to focus on their full platforms. I think that’s something where I would not only learn history I’m unaware of and see how things have evolved, but would also learn about different issues and help clarify my positions. I had this thought when researching Teddy Roosevelt. He’s always been my favorite personality wise, and I love his strength of character, his stand on corruption and equality, and his balanced view on conservation. Additionally, I think he was progressive on racial issues for his time. What’s left out of the discussion today is that even science in his time supported the racial hierarchy theory. I was surprised, however, with things like his supporting the New Manifest Destiny (not to be confused with the original) his objections to free trade, and his position on big government. I hadn’t realized there were major ideological differences beyond racial hierarchy. Still admire him, and given the competition would probably have voted for him, but his ideology is not as closely aligned with mine as I’d thought. I think it would be interesting to find the president I most closely align with.

He wasn't adequately prepped and used a hearing aid which was picking up a ton of interference, so you have to feel for the guy. He was asked a question and the camera switched to his podium and he wasn't there! (walking around trying to get away from the electronic interference). At other times Gore and Quayle were talking and Stockdale could be seen walking around behind them. In response to one journalist's question he said "I'm all out of ammo on that one"... sadly he's not alone in uninformed candidates in modern times, however.

    Speaking of Bobby Kennedy, I feel like a 1968 election between him and George Romney would have been one of those years where it would have been hard to choose one over the other since they would have been great candidates.
    Kind of like 1952 and 1956, where Americans both liked Ike and Stevenson, but Ike won those elections.

    The first time I ever voted was for Jimmy Carter in 1976 (I was 19 years old). I had grown up in the South in a fairly conservative Christian home; but had become increasingly liberal in college. Carter really inspired me in 1976 - he was a strong evangelical Christian with a centrist economic approach and a progressive social and foreign policy agenda. He inherited stagflation and an energy crisis from his Republican predecessors, along with a disillusioned populace suffering from both the post-watergate and post-Vietnam War syndrome. Simply put, he was elected President at a very difficult moment in history. But the economy DID improve under Carter, and he had some major foreign policy accomplishments - from the Panama Canal Treaty to the Camp David Peace Accords. He helped to positively transform the image of the US in the eyes of the world with his unprecedented emphasis on human rights rather than the Machiavellian dirty tricks of previous Cold War administrations. He was a breath of fresh air.

They fought a worthless war and one was my husband James Edward McLaud a USA Navy Seal and Black Burae. A new recruit,a young new sailor was afraid to go to the front line. Jim saw the fear in his eyes and volunteered to go in his place,but the Commander held Jim back. When only the Commander returned from Saigon, Jim asked "Where s the team?" The officer said that they all died. Jim hit the officer in the jaw therefore putting Him in the brig For 3.5 years. Jim spent his military time painting the walls in the prison walls so he wouldn t go insane. He was given a less than Honorable Discharge,which made him angry. When I heard Him was a Marshall Artist" I called his Commander and after telling him what Jim went through he changed his award as an excellent caring seal to an " Honorable Discharge." Jim when he died had the 21 gun salute and the American red flag draped over his casket to declare him a Viet Nam War Veteran with all the honors he died for. He told me it was a war we should never had entered. We had no right to meddle in their affairs.This is what Jim believed in. He died at the age of 66 with Pancreatic cancer in 2009AD. Thanks men like Jim a warrior they got their freedom. Our men returned with PTSD and felt empty inside. Johnny Wall was Jim s best friend and his name is the first casualty s name on the wall.
