  • Arwen reviews the 1940 Hollywood rendition of “Pride and Prejudice” with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. This star-studded movie made some interesting choices. Did they know what they were doing with the fashion and hairstyles? What kind of Lizzy and Darcy were they trying to put forward in 1940? What changes did the adaptation make and did it all work for this film?

Wow... what a wonderful review! So fair to recognize its faults and to speculate on possible reasons why, and so knowledgeable to appreciate work well done. I lean more to the choice of 1830s dresses because they look more fabulous than simple Regency frocks on screen, as opposed to the war of 1812, which few Americans even remember -- indeed, they call it the Forgotten War, perhaps because they basically lost :)

History is funny with odd similarities.
And yeah, I think the 1830s dresses are fab too!
      Glad you liked the review!
