I am Afrikaans and I am surprised that I understood the Suriname Dutch better than the white lady's Dutch. Very interesting is that the Suriname lady's pronounciation of the words, particularly the vowels, is much more similar to Afrikaans than the white lady's Dutch. The black lady pronounces her words, especially the vowels, very similar to the standard Coloured Afrikaans pronounciation and therefore it sounds far more familiar to my ears than the white lady's Dutch. Note "Coloured" is used as the name for the Coloured demographic group in South Africa, an official group, it ia not disparaging or racist in South Africa,it is the correct term for that race of people. The Coloured race developed from the mixture of black and white people but in South Africa they are now an official demographic and cultural group called "Coloured" not "mixed race".
Some Surinamese people are really good speakers. They speak Dutch slowly and articulate every word very clear. Most Dutch people speak like the lady in the video, fast and less articulate. Not that the Dutch don’t articulate but with a Surinamese dialect the articulation just sounds much better imo. Very interesting

It's like the case of uneven intelligibility between Portuguese and Spanish in that Dutch can understand Afrikaans fairly well while Afrikaners can just barely grasp what Dutch people are sating.
Maja Olofsson mm understanding Afrikaans isn't that hard but because the language didn't evolve it's hard to understand a lot of times as a Dutch person. It's easier to understand Dutch from Suriname imho

She is a teacher cutting up the syllables as much as possible, using her teacher voice to sound as understandable as possible. Try listening to some news anchors from the Netherlands or even South Africa. I am sure you'll understand almost as much as you understood of what she said :-)

Subsequently it has been adapted slightly according to the various (extroverted emotions) we are also known by. And of course, there are a number of ethnicities in Suriname speaking Dutch, each with their own accent variations on it.
The Dutch in NL moved through a vowel change, which it didn't in Belgium, South Africa and Suriname. So all the latter nations understand each other better than the variant spoken in the country of NL.

You could not be more off. I like it throught. Because Suriname is a melting pot of alot (mainly African, Chinese, Indian, Javanese, small part natives and small part Dutch), so the langues also has words from different places. But try to find the English sounded words, they can be easly noticed or a bit twisted. You will understand alot if you can find those words. But it also depends on the person who speaks (like surinamese-indian use very few English words).
