God I've been trying to remember Robotrek for over 20 years. Watched my brother play it, and I could distinctly remember the robot custom colouring screen in my head but nothing else. And you showed literally that exact screen in this video. Thank you.
When I was a kid I got all my snes games stolen from my house and I never remember the name of one of my favorites games but I remember the gameplay and some sprites but finally I can replace it thanks to you! It was BRAINSTORM.
@@luiswhisky Sorry about that, dude. My twin brother got his new Xbox and all his games stolen as well back when the Xbox first came out. He thinks it was his roommates friends that did it.
My Friends actually "borrow" me my cartridge, but i never see my cartridges again, when i asked them my cartridges they told me that was their super metroid (my super Metroid that i never saw again😩)
I honestly don't remember any of the prisoners turning on you. There were 2 separate factions. You could come across certain groups fighting each other. Didn't matter if you killed a bunch or left them alive.
@@TuckAndRun Prisoners don't turn on you. Only the seer followers in the forest do if you hit them. The other humans wearing purple are enemies that follow Sarlac.
Props to you for making a video about TRUE obscure SNES games. Everybody else just mentions Lufia, Terranigma and tons of other games which are not really that obscure, they're just not as famous as Zelda and Final Fantasy. You really did dig up some real underground stuff.
I get why these kinds of videos might be annoying to an snes vet but for a newbie like me just trying to find good games while most people talk about the same game, I found this video really helpful.
I had Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel. That game is pretty hard at times and I’ve only made it to the third level once mainly because I kept getting damaged during the cave level.
All of The Games And there's a 32x version that even improves upon the awesomeness that is Blackthorne by upping the visual fidelity and color blending as well as having slightly improved sound effects, and even an exclusive level! If you like the game already, I totally suggest you check it out! Basically a 32 bit version of an already great game with all the enhancements one would expect from a jump in generation.
Thanks for all these videos! I really enjoy how you just talk about what you like and don't in a relaxed way. This, since the internet is now flooded with reviewers trying too hard to be impartial. Since such a thing is totally impossible, I really appreciate your honesty. Feels like a friend talking about videogames instead of an alienated gamer.
Yep pretty much. If you struggle at the stage that climbs get the plane that fires up as well, but only if absolutely necessary as you probably won’t afford the top plane if you do
SNES is a gem all around! Best console EVER created. Had beautiful graphics for it's time, variety of games, lasted a nice cycle, still holds replay value and games still get released to play n look like these games today!!! Hands down best system ever!
Do you know any manga websites that has every chapter for Area 88? I'm asking, because every time I find a site that has the manga series it only has around 59 chapters (if you find any, I don't mind if it's in Japanese). By the way, the OVA wasn't bad, but I didn't like the way it ended.
I'm not a big fan of RPGs, but love Robotrek. That says a lot. Great picks here. Phantom 2040 is an absolute steal at under $12 currently on PriceCharting. Beautiful graphics, great in-game mechanics, big world... just great.
I LOVED True Lies as a kid, super satisfying to shoot the baddies in that one. I remember it starts getting really hard near the end, would be cool to replay it now
Spanky’s Quest and Zero (and Plok) were my jam as a kid. Glad to see them get some recognition! And I never though I’d be intrigued by an Adventure Island game. Thanks!
I love the way you reviewed every games in details. Even though i'm not a SNES player myself. But for most of the reviewers, i enjoyed the way you present each of the SNES games. And most of all, i love your opening video sequences 😂. SNES Drunk!
My favourite thing about your channel is that you don't end your videos with the "don't forget to like, share, give me a hand job and subscribe for more content."
I had forgotten about it till now! That was a fantastic game, and was one of the first games to have actual blood on a SNES game at the time! Remember that was the time where Nintendo was about censoring violence but having better sound and graphics and Sega was: "We're edgy and cool because we have violent games!!!"
True Lies was no hidden gem. Gem, yes. Hidden, no. It was always available at the local video stores when I was young and I knew lots of people who had played it. I rented it a few times myself. Loved it though I don't think I ever survived past the mall stage. Despite how awful the Terminator games were, I don't think anyone at that point was feeling jaded enough with licensed games to not give a game with Arnie on the cover a try.
Discovering this channel couldn't of come at a better time for me. I recently got back into SNES and Genesis hardcore, I grew up on those systems. I'm definitely going to check out dragon view. Thanks for all you do, it's amazing!
I used to have Choplifter III and thought I was the only one appreciating it so much. Thanks for the acknowledgement, good games are good regardless if they're talked about on magazines or not
Holy crap Robotrek!!! I played all night at my Uncles once when I was a kid and have been trying to figure out what it was called, for I don't know, 25 years or so!! Nobody I've asked had any idea, not even my Uncle. The very definition of Hidden Gem!!!
Totally agree with UN Squadron. My dad bought it at a Kmart on a whim in 1992 just because the cover art reminded him of top gun. Years later when I was stationed in England I stumbled upon Area 88, it looked so familiar. No idea it was a UN Squadron film.
not so hidden actually. But if you want more EVO its predecessor, 4.6 Billion Year Story - THE Shinkaron for PC-98, has been translated under the name EVO - Theory of Evolution it is an absolutely fantastic, if primitive, RPG and even the manual has been translated (and a good thing too, since 2.2 billion years of the story are contained within)
I love Robotrek, it’s such a fun game. Sure it’s not perfect, particularly in regards to the translation and occasional cryptic-ness, but it has a lot of great ideas and charm. Definitely one of my top 5 SNES RPGs
Good list, have to try some of those at some point. Hidden gem what i recommend is Mr.Nutz, it starts as a cute mascot-game, when you progress in the game, it is a little bit freaky, and really challenging in a good way.
I played dragon view last night on retroarch. Really fun game, got quite far before saving and going to bed. Will probably pick it back up again tonight. Nice video btw :)
The fact that everyone's list will be subjective, but *extremely* thoughtful, is the point of asking everyone to make this list. virtually nobody's should be completely the same!
man I almost had UN Squadron growing up, but my dad bought it specifically because he thought it would be a flight sim, not a shmup. he returned it or turned it in for cash to a game store or something, the point is I missed out on playing a classic lol.
Dragon View foi merecidamente escolhido em ficar na primeira colocação. Ainda possuo o cartucho deste jogo maravilhoso que tive a oportunidade de finalizar. Parabéns pela postagem.
Spike McFang and Dragon View are 2 of thise obscure ganes I always intendes to check out but completely forgot over time. Thanks for the reminder. Didn2t expect to see Phantom 2040 on the list but for Metroidvania fans this is a goos recommendation.
THANK YOU for confirming to me that the Twisted Tales of Spike McFang was actually a real game, and not just a childhood hallucination from drinking too much Sunny D. I remember it was awesome, but could never remember what it was called! Def gonna look it up now.
I totally agree with this list man! I grew up with half of these games, but you introduced me to some great looking ones also, my aim is to play everything on this list.
Choplifter 3 is one of the most slept upon games ever! All my friends and I in the neighborhood had it in grade school and we spent many hours at all each other’s houses trying to beat it.... and I also still remember playing the original arcade game inside that “cockpit” style cabinet for hours upon hours as an even younger kid....
This is a great video, several of these games I've had sitting in a roms folder for 10 years because they sounded stupid (True Lies, Super Adventure Island 2, Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel most notably) . I might have to try them out now! UN Squadron rules though.
Like the lists and I'm glad Brain Lord is getting some love here. Zero: The Kamikaze Squirrel looks sweet...damn my luck for missing that one. My two cents: W.I.L.D.C.A.T.S. (beat 'em up), Firepower 2000 and HyperZone and Total Carnage (vertical shooters), Nosferatu (a little like Prince of Persia), Firestriker (forgot the actual genre except that it was fun as hell), and Earth Defense Force (horizontal shooter).
Metal Marines is a SNES hidden gem for me. I played hours and hours of that game as a kid and I've never heard anyone ever talk about it and everytime I bring it up nobody knows what I'm talking about. I thought that game was really fun.
While I knew of the vast majority of these gems, I only played Blackthorne, Brainlord, and Dragonview to completion, and I played True Lies and UN Squadron during rentals from Blockbuster. Clearly my love of RPGs, puzzle elements, and games like Out of This World and Flashback were a huge factor in my choices. :) I'll have to try all the platformers someday though. I'm not as fond of that genre as I was in my youth, but these particular games look pretty fun for a playthrough.
I remember playing a strategy game called Utopia on SNES that could have made this list. The memory of that game haunts me to this day. Probably just a case of nostalgia painting something with rose tinted glasses but one of my first tastes of the strategy genre aside from SimCity and C&C.
Hidden Gems? Choplifter III, Twisted Tales of Spike McFang, Blackthorne, UN Squadron, (dis)honorable mention of Soul Blazer. That's a good portion of my childhood days right there. BTW, all games I would gladly pick up and play again.
Great vid will try all of these! Not obscure but Buster Busts Loose is one of my fave SNES games that I never hear anyone mention, Wild and Wacky Sports too.
UN Squadron was actually based off a manga, Area 88. There was a stream of sequels and some even on the GBA. Nice list. Super Adventure Island 2 gave me many hours of enjoyment while I was younger.
This made me think, since you have such a variety of knowledge on all things SNES you should do a list of what you consider the most genre defying or creating titles for the system and its successors. I'm always intrigued to see how developers on the system got creative whether it was successful or a failure. I'm thinking things like Dragon Viewer, SOS, Clocktower, Starfox, Sutte Hakkun, Pocky and Rocky, or even things like Kirby which made people rethink platformers (I realize it came out before the SNES but just an example).
At first: congratulations for your channel! You are the only one that in video's description insert a "view list" with minutes to see directly parts. It's so good! Then, your videos are very amazing. Subscribed
UN Squadron is pretty well known, but the rest of this list is really good, a lot of games I didn't even know existed (I would have been all over Super Adventure Island 2 & Dragon View). And I thought I knew the SNES library back to front.
Loading up my NES and SNES mini I got a good lock at the cover art of the past and noticed a consistent theme. If it the original art was anime or cute in any way, the US Version was completely changed or made edgier. A dude with sunglasses was a major go to for NES game cover art as well.
Great to see Choplifter III and especially Phantom 2014 on the list. Those two were among some of my favourite games growing up. Phantom is criminally underrated which is a terrible shame considering how good it is.
One hidden gem I've NEVER heard anyone talk about is a japanese game called ""Whirlo". It wasnt released in the US and that's why very few people played it, but the game is absolutely awesome. You play as a green dude armed with a pitchfork, and it starts pretty humble: you are in your village trying to save your son from a curse that turns people into stone. As you progress you meet tons of charming characters with very cute stories. The game ends when you travel to the stars to fight the witch who cursed everyone. Some levels are very difficult (but not impossible) and the game never becomes annoying, as each level is pretty unique and fun to play.
I played Spanky's Quest... on the Gameboy. And because of system limitations, the balls that Spanky bounced off his head didn't transform into sporting equipment when you popped them, just featureless black spots which I assumed were nuts or something. I don't recall having to collect keys, because I remember it being more like Bubble Bobble, with you clearing each stage when you kill all the enemies. It was pretty good actually, all things considered, but I didn't even know another version of it existed.
I need to give Dragon View another go. Wasn’t a fan when it first came out; I was expecting a sequel to Drakkhen which, while not the best game, really hooked me for some reason. Also didn’t enjoy Blackthorne but I’d try it again too hearing your praise for it.
Why so much hate for hidden gems videos? I have found so many new games from videos just like yours! Speaking of hidden gems your page is a hidden gem. Your videos are high quality and deserve more views!
Because "hidden gems" is blatant transparent click bait more often than not. But this sort of thing keeps getting requested so I might as well roll with it. Thanks for watching
Totally not kidding about UN Squadron. We had it when I was a kid but I never touched it because it looked like a flight sim and watching my dad play those I thought it would be crazy boring. Really missed out on that, cause I love shmups!
For awhile, I considered Enix the best RPG developer. Dragon View was really amazing too. I bought it on a whim used from my local grocery store back in the late 90's and I was pretty impressed with what I got. I loaned it to all of my friends and they all loved it too. The thing is, Dragon View can be really hard sometimes.
Going through my modded snes mini Chopper lifter 3 was the only decent Chopper game i found, nice. Cheers for the other recommendations too, True Lies looks cool
The true hidden gem? SNESdrunk.
I was going to buy that game but my when I went back to get it the store wasn't there.
Wait. It was called 'Drinking Games' or something like that.
You sir, are a poet. Very smooth
It’s called “Super Drink” in Japan 🇯🇵
Somebody meeting AVGN video game. Somebody should make a SNESdrunk snes game

Shit man, sorry to hear that.
Who tf breaks into a house to steal games
Bertrand D they stole almost everything, even things of little value, and I guess they think the video games would sell or something.

Phantom is criminally underrated which is a terrible shame considering how good it is.
choplifter III. Easily one of the most memorable games I ever played
Zero has to be one of the best hidden gems I've ever played.
All of The Games I hope I get the Super NES version for Christmas so I can complete the Aero trilogy.
I need it!!!
These vids are awesome especially when shitting
😂😂
Shitting on coats?
@brendan wright Used to fuck it but what the heck bring it on the you fucker
For awhile, I considered Enix the best RPG developer.
Dragon View was really amazing too. I bought it on a whim used from my local grocery store back in the late 90's and I was pretty impressed with what I got. I loaned it to all of my friends and they all loved it too. The thing is, Dragon View can be really hard sometimes.
Dragon view is a true love game. Lotta good memories with that one.
Id love to see best CO-OP / Multiplayer games 2 or 4 player like Bomberman series, Joe and Mac, Pocky and Rocky.
It's not clickbait when you do it. Just keep being awesome.
Going through my modded snes mini Chopper lifter 3 was the only decent Chopper game i found, nice.
Cheers for the other recommendations too, True Lies looks cool
Brain Lord: winner of both best SNES game name for a metal band and best SNES cover art for a metal album.
