This is so stupid. They need to make a rule against blocking air now. Not every driver has the same size hand and therefore it’s a uneven playing field
Everything has a variance that's allowed. Just make sure every driver has legal size hands and it's all good, lol

The reason they busted him had nothing to do with whatever "advantage" the glove may/may not have provided. Truth be told it likely did next to nothing. But as a race team they look for every minute tiny thing. The reason for the penalty is because they modified a once legal glove, making it illegal. You cannot take a piece of legal safety equipment and modify it AT ALL. Wear it as designed and manufactured. They didn't do that, hence the penalty

The way I see it, if the glove was fire retardant then who should care if he had it webbed? Pretty smart to me.

I wonder how much of an advantage they thought it would give them. Seems like a silly thing to try and get away with especially with all the cameras in and around the car.
Joey has always been a driver that tried new things to make Nascar better. He was one of the first to drive these new cars. He drives the new tracks ect,.. before the races get there. I wonder if he realized oops I left these gloves on type thing. I find it curious he has not done an interview since this whole thing happened
They all have done it time to time, what's silly is driving at 180 with one hand😜
It wasn't a performance advantage. All the glove did was provide him a way of getting more air into the cabin to help cool him down the long straightaways.

@@MichaelSmith-kr9qw It was used to cut airflow into the car to make it go faster because less air flow into the car mean less drag that slows the car down on the strait away. You know what they say, You ain't cheating you ain't trying lol
SFI is the certification rating used by North American sanctioning bodies. FIA certifications are internationally

prolly to create slightly less aero drag inside the car, other than that i cant think of any reason for the glove
The driver's window net creates a fair amount of drag when the cars are out on the track by themselves. Air gets sucked into the car through the opening and creates turbulence. So, when trying to turn a fast qualifying lap, drivers will hold their hand up to the A pillar to try to block some of the air coming into the car. This reduces drag by just enough to be worth a couple of hundredths of a second in lap time. Doesn't sound like much, but especially on drafting tracks, that can make a 2-3 position difference in the starting lineup.
Logano's webbing took that idea and ran with it. That's about a 50% increase in surface area over just using his fingers, maybe even more. Would that make a huge difference? Maybe, maybe not. His cars were clearly fast. But he also started on the front row two weeks in a row, and whether the glove had anything to do with it or not, it casts doubt on whether those times were fairly earned.

And your explanation is on point, we see drivers do it all the time in qualifying, BUT I don't think it makes up to 50 percent or more, it could and I could be wrong, I can accept when I'm wrong, other then that, I agree with everything you said, your explanation was spot on, you clearly know what your speaking about, heck alot of people don't even know either they even do that, or why they even do that.

Any actual real science on this? I would think taking your hand off the wheel and then focusing on putting it next to the netting would more than offset any alleged benefit off offsetting drag created by the netting.
They can drive these cars with one hand. It's only necessary to use two in traffic.
Never watched a NASCAR race in my life…and couldn’t make heads or tails as to what the controversy was when I saw this in a blog post. Now that it’s been explained to me I’ll definitely never watch a race now lol
He wasn’t actually on pit road when the yellow was issued. Nascar just let him slide because this pit road set up is absolutely horrendous and they know it. I feel like Joey’s glove was a little tick tacky but whatever.
Yes, Atlanta used to have a good pit road when track was made as a 1.5--1.66 mile speedway, however during the Atlanta redo to a 1.8--1.9 mile track pit road was kept nearly the same as was before no changes other then a widening of opening and pushing pits back as could be done due to a larger track allowing for a pushback .
in my opinion...they should have made the glove and webbing from other sfi gloves...so all parts are fireproof
The penalty did not fit the infraction. to basically cost Logano the race because of a glove that may or may not aid in speed but Oh yea this nonprofit said the glove is not safe. . When other drivers change CAR parts and only have to go to the back of the field. Logano overcame the penalty and then later he wrecks his car but still. This whole glove thing was excessive and stupid. Now if he had the gloves on in the race now we are talking infraction but during practise /qualifying BS.
Rules are rules. And it's top shelf motorsports. They get paid big bucks, they get fined big bucks
It wasn't a performance advantage or a device to aid in speed the glove was used to provide cooler air into the cabin to help him stay cooler during the race....

When other changes car parts like the 2 Stewart-Has cars have to start at the back, they get penalized driver and owner points, fines, and or lose crew chiefs for up to 5 races depending on what parts are in violation.

@am1999 A safety issue if they were worn DURING a race. Then I get it. But he had them on during practice and then qualifing. Not sure how that is a bad /terrible thing to make a driver practically loose a race by handycapping them 2 laps down from the get go. Yea I know he wrecked later in the race but still.

To issue the penalty is one thing.... But then to not actually have it truly served because of a yellow flag makes this a complete fail on both sides.

The severity of the penalty was too much anyway.
They never stated the penalty had to be served under green. Case closed
I agree the caution that early was very lucky the rule is clear as day he served it, now moving forward they might make it mandatory green flag pass through

This is so freaking stupid. There's not enough airflow through the cabin for his gloves to be any factor. If he wants to risk his hands being burned, that's his problem.

Nascar needs to quit nick picking because if they keep it up at the level they are, the drivers are going to go back when it used to be fun for them. The money and screwtanity of it all isn't worth it at the end of the day. They say making it into the Nascar Circuit is the ultimate goal. At what price! If you don't have money, you're going nowhere in it these days. Wise up drivers. Money isn't everything like you think it is!!!
Not a fan of him but it was pretty funny to see. The penalty is kinda stupid tho.
Just say you start the race 1 lap down. Go to the end of the longest line to start the race. It’s that simple.
The issue is that they broke the rules and got themselves where they were because of it.
Rule breakers should always take the worst possible scenario to determine from cheating in the future.
It sucks for them, but they tried to get an extra 10th of a second and ended up getting a penalty. It's where THEY put themselves.
They took the risk and the penny is the penalty.

He was to fast the France GM family had to slow him down so they went looking for stuff. MOPAR was smart Staying out of NASCAR .
