My boyfriend is Czech, we've been together almost three years and I'm moving to Czech Republic with him next month. About not speaking Czech, it's true! He finds it much easier to just speak English with me, and the same with his friends! The only thing is that his family doesn't speak much english so I'll be really trying to learn while I'm there. Dream Prague You can save it for extreme situations involving strangers trying to rob you or harm you ;) You’ll hear it from guys every now and then but girls wouldn’t really use it unless they feel really hurt or outraged. Writing this makes me realize that there’s a lot of gender differences when it comes to vocab in Czech :D Just like others have mentioned with ty vole - many men slip it into every sentence and won’t be looked down upon, whereas a woman saying ty vole frequently will be thought of as vulgar!
I'd tell that a motherfucker is the word in equal situations in USA ... (from what I can hear in some movies) ... but probably not used so often in CZ.
Jednu věc je třeba zmínit ( byla správně zmíněná i ve videu například o bydlení) . Praha je specifické město a místo. Ne vše jak se tam dělá, žije, myslí je stejné pro zbytek Česka. Takže udělat si kompletní obrázek o České republice, o lidech co tu žijí nelze udělat jen z pohledu žití v Praze.

I'm sure there will e a lot of comments about "tyvole" and I think you already know it, but you don't want to say "tyvole" to someone you normally "vykas". Although it's pretty complicated (as everything about the Czech language). Generally, I'd avoid using "tyvole" in a formal setting. Curak is generally "a dick". Love both of you. "ty vole" is a mild curse word, it's okay to use casually, but if someone uses it all the time, people usually think they are stupid and/or uneducated. You definitely shouldn't use it in a more formal setting or with older people (even relatives, my grandma would probably kill me if I said that to her lol).
“Ty vole” for me is kind of a “teenager” phrase, one of the mildest. I do use is as sort of a mild “shocked” expression - barely avoiding a collision, seeing a car accident... that kind of thing. “vole” is vocative of vůl “ox”, “ty jsi vůl” is an idiom calling the person stupid, akin to “you’re a dumbass”.

So I've just spent a month in the Czech Republic, one week of which was spent living together with about 6 friends of mine most of who I've known for around 10 years (a lengthy time period at the age of 19). Your channel came up as an unlikely topic of conversation between several of us, with all of us having watched your videos, finding them very interesting. So keep up the great work and don't let the haters comments get to you, as I'm sure you know- they will always be there no matter what you do. Keep it up!!

PS: Cyril and Metodeus brought glagolic, which is older than cyrillic, but we switched to latin in 11th century so we had no time for accepting cyrillic.

But locals of Bohemia had to speak somehow, and the way they spake, at that time, would be called ‘Czech’ - Old Czech, as it happens. As far as I know, ‘we’, the modern people, know rather little of what the Old Czech was like. We do know that Old Czechs appeared to readily comprehend Old Slavonic. That does not mean anyhow that that was what they spoke themselves. There is indirect evidence that Old Czech did differ, to some degree, as could reasonably be expected. To apply the term ‘standard written language’ to that era sounds rather ridiculous to me; it was the only written Slavic language of the day, alright. However, most people could not read or write in any language. The same for ‘lingua franca’ for the time and place… Most people of that time and place never travelled. They would come into contact with travelling merchants, however, and one can reasonably assume that such merchants would communicate with the locals in whatever gibberish they could put together to be comprehended. To presume some standardised linqua franca for the area and era, sounds preposterous.

I've just pointed out that the Slavic languages in their modern forms did not exist back then. The dialects, that evolved into their respective languages much later, were still very close to each other. To the point so they were counted as dialects of the same "language" (I must have added quotes here, so you won't be nitpicking).

Hi guys 😁 first of all I love both of you're channels and I think you're amazing 😁😊 but there is one thing you got wrong in this video that I'd like you know 😅 Saint Cyril and Methodius did not bring Cyrillic script here! Saint Cyril came up with glagolitic script (in Czech Hlaholice) that they and their disciples used. Following the death of Methodius, their students were forced to leave Great Moravia (because of different political climate) they fled to Bulgaria (also a Slavic country that used the same language as we did at the time, it was called Old church Slavonic). In Bulgaria they were using the script until 12th century, but only in a few orthodox churches. Hlaholice was a script Cyrillic actually descended from and some of its letters even made it into Cyrillic. So yes it is true we never used Cyrillic, because we used script that predates it and that influenced it. That's just a little Czech high school student, I hope you found my comment a little useful and that you'll continue to create such a fabulous contents as you always did. I think that one of the problems is also that cyrilice in czech is a different thing than цырылица (read cyrilica, means azbuka in czech) in east and southern slavic languages. But otherwise i think thatyou did really good job summin all that up!

Hey Dream Prague. I am also a Czech from Ord, Nebraska, although my last 8 years in America were spent in Eugene, Oregon. I currently live in Hanoi. My Grandmother spoke Czech but the language and culture were not really passed on, except the food. I miss both of my Grandmother's Czech food. I am a trained opera singer. I told my mother that I wish that that the language would have been passed on because it would have made learning Dvorak a lot easier. Andrea, thanks to your video about dating a Czech man, I now understand why my uncle and cousin always sat in their underwear at night on the farm. I am used to taking off my shoes in the house now because of 8 years in Asia. I like being barefoot. But everyone here wears and shares plastic slippers. My kung fu brother may be opening a dojo in Prague sometime within the next 2 years and I may be coming with him to help. I do have questions and will DM you both via Instagram. Oh that is so interesting that you are mentioning smiling on strangers. I have never realized that we (Czechs) don't smile much or talk to cashers in the stores untiled I moved away. So when I visit Czech Republic I do get those strange looks when I smile at or talk to stranger. I love your videos, great inside from life of expats. Thank you.

It is 100% I do that a lot... I know there's an english version of the word and I just use it... Like I used to say enamored all the time... Which is Spanish but makes me sound so fancy! I wanted to say that having him is a perk... *facepalm* haha
In the previous older video, the sentence was that Czechs build houses out of concrete. Maybe it's a mistake in translation or subtitles (?) Houses are usually built of fired bricks here. From the concrete panels are built ugly high-rise apartment building on the outskirts of the city. Nowadays, lightweight foam concrete bricks are also popular. Houses in Prague are mostly made of fired bricks, very old houses mainly made of sandstone. Clean concrete houses are not built much - it's unnecessarily solid (for example, the Czechs built a house in Hiroshima, the only building that left standing. Or the Czechs built a big Grain Silo in Beirut port).

Great video - my two favourite expat UA-camrs in Prague, together! One of my favourite Czech phrases is 'to je skoda' - it's a pity/shame. Mainly because the word skoda means both 'shame', and is the famous car brand - and whenever I point it out to Czechs they've never thought about the fact they're the same word :p Jen - if you want to learn more about Czech film, may I recommend NaFilM? It is the National Film Museum (nafilm.org) - its just off the Franciscan gardens in the centre of Prague. Its modern, interactive and a lot of fun!

@@DreamPrague Well, the surname is from 15th century, I think, and probably means "someone who suffered some damage". As for the car, it is named after a very famous factory owner with that surname. The company made a lot of things. Artillery pieces (namely naval cannons), ship and fortification armour plates, and fortification cupolas and turrets made by "Skoda" were a legend in many countries.
"škoda" = damage , harm, injury, loss, detriment, hurt, waste of..,, "Škoda" is old surname. Škoda CAR = merger of (1925) "Laurin & Klement" (1895, cars, bikes, motobikes) AND Škoda's engineering works (1859) (named by Emil Škoda). The surenames have nothing to do with the meaning of the word and no one usually seeks a connection. OR "Šíp, Křídlo, Oko, Dobré Auto" (Logo of car).
"vole" with meaning similar to "dude" is quite a common word. It is very informal and very often it appears as a bad habit. People are often saying that without even knowing that and can be hard for them not say that. If you use it a lot in conversation with person who does not know you he/she can get impression that you are a simple person with not very bright intellect. Sometimes phrase "no ty vole" can have a similar meaning as OMG very often in situations when you are annoyed and surprised at the same time or in situation when you want to express that your experience was very intense.

You should put your efforts together, Jens production is really well prepared, with great themes, excellent sense of humor and very good ideas and point. Andreas videos are light for me to see how foreign see simple life and things in Czechia. "Vole" is used like an insult by decent people and like a common "title" for friends between not so decent people. Phrase "ty vole" can be used by decent people and it is used in situation of surprise, it means wow! or what?! I have always despised the people who used the word vole like a dude. As a child I composed a little ironic pun. It was a conversation of two friends: - Máš sirky, vole? - Jo, vole! - Kolik, vole? - Tři, vole! - Ty vole! These days "vole" is for many people a very weak word. So they call their friends (and every other people) "pičo". I think that some people are really mental.
Except as "parasitic word", insult or rough addressing of a friend "ty vole" also works as a word of relief (of frustration) like: "No ty vole to snad nemysleli vážně!".

Regarding “ty vole” and the other word that I will not even repeat: ty vole is casual but it is also rude! You can say it to your friends or among young people but you can’t use it with strangers not to mention older people - that’s like calling them idiots. And the c-word, I can understand that as a foreigner you can’t feel the connotation but calling that your husband is probably the worst you can do (even if it’s a joke). That’s the worst word to call any man basically. I hope that helps with your Czech learning 😉
Dream Prague I use ty vole quite a lot. Everytime I’m amazed and among friends. But sometimes I say it to my Mum by accident when I’m excited, a slip of a tongue, she used to be offended by it but now she doesn’t even notice anymore 😂 She knows I don’t mean it.

Jen, I've followed your videos for some time. My ancestors came to the USA from the Czechoslovakia are in the 1870s, and settled in Nebraska. They were from the Bruno area and from 50 km west of Prague. My folks, who are both 93, can still talk Czech as well as English. I was interested to hear your husband is from Nebraska. We hope to travel to Czechia soon and use your videos as a proper. Andrea this is the 1st time I've seen your video. It will be fun to watch your take on the Czech culture.
I would not use ''ty vole'' as an english equivalent of ''dude'', it has completely different meaning and overall feeling, it is not really polite and some could have taken it personally. I would rather avoid "Ty vole" altogether :). I feel like it is something mostly (but not only) adolescents would use. And it is certainly something you will not hear everywhere and some people would consider it rude - especially the older generation.
Great video. Fun to watch you 2 together. "Ty vole" - using that at the beginning of every sentence is typical of people with low education and social standing ("mluví jako dlaždič"). Constructive criticism versus noncontructive attacking criticism - this is a concept that many Czech people dont understand (in English there are these standardized descriptions for criticism but in Czech this is not so) - as far as I have seen and heard: other youtubers just disclaim that they will be deleting aggressive or vulgar content or even block that user from writing comments and then they actually do that - boundries/limits/consequences. Oh, and 1% of the population in every country had narcissistic personality disorder - those people attack, criticize with no qualms.
Check out HBO show Terapie, there is one of the best czech male actors Karel Roden as a main character, it takes place basically in a psychologist surgery, where there goes a few interesting people and stories. One of the best tv shows, that czechia actually made
I guess the main confusion with cyrillic is that in English what you call cyrillic is actually "azbuka" in Czech (and other slavic languages). While "cyrilice" is the old slavonic script that was developed in Bulgaria from "hlaholice" which is the script that Konstantin and Methodeus brought to Great Moravia. But at that time the language here wasn't called Czech, it's called Old Church Slavonic. So yeah, I guess technically Czech was never written in neither cyrilice nor azbuka. But Czech evolved from Old Slavonic which at that time was used in most of Slavic Europe and in some places (such as Bulgaria), Old Slavonic was written in cyrilice. I guess you decide if it means that in the history of Czech cyrillic was used.

"ty vole" is a mild curse word, it's okay to use casually, but if someone uses it all the time, people usually think they are stupid and/or uneducated. You definitely shouldn't use it in a more formal setting or with older people (even relatives, my grandma would probably kill me if I said that to her lol).
“Ty vole” for me is kind of a “teenager” phrase, one of the mildest. I do use is as sort of a mild “shocked” expression - barely avoiding a collision, seeing a car accident... that kind of thing. “vole” is vocative of vůl “ox”, “ty jsi vůl” is an idiom calling the person stupid, akin to “you’re a dumbass”.

PS: Cyril and Metodeus brought glagolic, which is older than cyrillic, but we switched to latin in 11th century so we had no time for accepting cyrillic.
The question is: Which language was written in the script? The answer is: Old Slavonic (not Czech).

You can hardly have any evidence for such wishful claim. There was no modern Czech, obviously. But locals of Bohemia had to speak somehow, and the way they spake, at that time, would be called ‘Czech’ - Old Czech, as it happens. As far as I know, ‘we’, the modern people, know rather little of what the Old Czech was like. We do know that Old Czechs appeared to readily comprehend Old Slavonic. That does not mean anyhow that that was what they spoke themselves. There is indirect evidence that Old Czech did differ, to some degree, as could reasonably be expected.
To apply the term ‘standard written language’ to that era sounds rather ridiculous to me; it was the only written Slavic language of the day, alright. However, most people could not read or write in any language.
The same for ‘lingua franca’ for the time and place… Most people of that time and place never travelled. They would come into contact with travelling merchants, however, and one can reasonably assume that such merchants would communicate with the locals in whatever gibberish they could put together to be comprehended. To presume some standardised linqua franca for the area and era, sounds preposterous.
@@marekj1100 I believe you are overthinking what I've said, I nowhere claimed that people of this area had no language. I've just pointed out that the Slavic languages in their modern forms did not exist back then. The dialects, that evolved into their respective languages much later, were still very close to each other. To the point so they were counted as dialects of the same "language" (I must have added quotes here, so you won't be nitpicking).

Hi guys 😁 first of all I love both of you're channels and I think you're amazing 😁😊 but there is one thing you got wrong in this video that I'd like you know 😅 Saint Cyril and Methodius did not bring Cyrillic script here! Saint Cyril came up with glagolitic script (in Czech Hlaholice) that they and their disciples used. Following the death of Methodius, their students were forced to leave Great Moravia (because of different political climate) they fled to Bulgaria (also a Slavic country that used the same language as we did at the time, it was called Old church Slavonic). In Bulgaria they were using the script until 12th century, but only in a few orthodox churches. Hlaholice was a script Cyrillic actually descended from and some of its letters even made it into Cyrillic. So yes it is true we never used Cyrillic, because we used script that predates it and that influenced it. That's just a little Czech high school student, I hope you found my comment a little useful and that you'll continue to create such a fabulous contents as you always did. I think that one of the problems is also that cyrilice in czech is a different thing than цырылица (read cyrilica, means azbuka in czech) in east and southern slavic languages. But otherwise i think thatyou did really good job summin all that up!

Hey Dream Prague. I am also a Czech from Ord, Nebraska, although my last 8 years in America were spent in Eugene, Oregon. I currently live in Hanoi. My Grandmother spoke Czech but the language and culture were not really passed on, except the food. I miss both of my Grandmother's Czech food. I am a trained opera singer. I told my mother that I wish that that the language would have been passed on because it would have made learning Dvorak a lot easier. Andrea, thanks to your video about dating a Czech man, I now understand why my uncle and cousin always sat in their underwear at night on the farm. I am used to taking off my shoes in the house now because of 8 years in Asia. I like being barefoot. But everyone here wears and shares plastic slippers. My kung fu brother may be opening a dojo in Prague sometime within the next 2 years and I may be coming with him to help. I do have questions and will DM you both via Instagram. 13:30 Cyril and Method brought hlaholika writing. It is a little bit similar to cyrilika, but not the same.
Actualy cyrilika is simplified and younger version of hlaholika, its been developed by succesors of Cyril and Metoděj, in Bulgaria.

In the previous older video, the sentence was that Czechs build houses out of concrete. Maybe it's a mistake in translation or subtitles (?) Houses are usually built of fired bricks here. From the concrete panels are built ugly high-rise apartment building on the outskirts of the city. Nowadays, lightweight foam concrete bricks are also popular. Houses in Prague are mostly made of fired bricks, very old houses mainly made of sandstone. Clean concrete houses are not built much - it's unnecessarily solid (for example, the Czechs built a house in Hiroshima, the only building that left standing. Or the Czechs built a big Grain Silo in Beirut port).
Newly built homes often seem to start as steel-reinforced concrete skeleton; the rest of the walls may be bricks.

Great video - my two favourite expat UA-camrs in Prague, together! One of my favourite Czech phrases is 'to je skoda' - it's a pity/shame. Mainly because the word skoda means both 'shame', and is the famous car brand - and whenever I point it out to Czechs they've never thought about the fact they're the same word :p
Jen - if you want to learn more about Czech film, may I recommend NaFilM? It is the National Film Museum (nafilm.org) - its just off the Franciscan gardens in the centre of Prague. Its modern, interactive and a lot of fun!

@@DreamPrague Well, the surname is from 15th century, I think, and probably means "someone who suffered some damage". As for the car, it is named after a very famous factory owner with that surname. The company made a lot of things. Artillery pieces (namely naval cannons), ship and fortification armour plates, and fortification cupolas and turrets made by "Skoda" were a legend in many countries.
"škoda" = damage
, harm, injury, loss, detriment, hurt, waste of..,, "Škoda" is old surname. Škoda CAR = merger of (1925) "Laurin & Klement" (1895, cars, bikes, motobikes) AND Škoda's engineering works (1859) (named by Emil Škoda). The surenames have nothing to do with the meaning of the word and no one usually seeks a connection.
OR "Šíp, Křídlo, Oko, Dobré Auto" (Logo of car).

"vole" with meaning similar to "dude" is quite a common word. It is very informal and very often it appears as a bad habit. People are often saying that without even knowing that and can be hard for them not say that. If you use it a lot in conversation with person who does not know you he/she can get impression that you are a simple person with not very bright intellect.
Sometimes phrase "no ty vole" can have a similar meaning as OMG very often in situations when you are annoyed and surprised at the same time or in situation when you want to express that your experience was very intense.
So many interesting information and most of comments react to "ty vole" and "curak" ... welcome to CZ :)

"Vole" is used like an insult by decent people and like a common "title" for friends between not so decent people. Phrase "ty vole" can be used by decent people and it is used in situation of surprise, it means wow! or what?!
I have always despised the people who used the word vole like a dude. As a child I composed a little ironic pun. It was a conversation of two friends:
- Máš sirky, vole?
- Jo, vole!
- Kolik, vole?
- Tři, vole!
- Ty vole!
These days "vole" is for many people a very weak word. So they call their friends (and every other people) "pičo". I think that some people are really mental.
Except as "parasitic word", insult or rough addressing of a friend "ty vole" also works as a word of relief (of frustration) like: "No ty vole to snad nemysleli vážně!".
You should take a trip to Dačice and say sorry to mayor and director of local museum :D :D

Hi guys, I watch you both and was pleasantly surprised to see you made videos together 👍🏼 I have some polite and well-meant remarks so don’t get offended. Regarding “ty vole” and the other word that I will not even repeat: ty vole is casual but it is also rude! You can say it to your friends or among young people but you can’t use it with strangers not to mention older people - that’s like calling them idiots. And the c-word, I can understand that as a foreigner you can’t feel the connotation but calling that your husband is probably the worst you can do (even if it’s a joke). That’s the worst word to call any man basically. I hope that helps with your Czech learning 😉

Dream Prague I use ty vole quite a lot. Everytime I’m amazed and among friends. But sometimes I say it to my Mum by accident when I’m excited, a slip of a tongue, she used to be offended by it but now she doesn’t even notice anymore 😂 She knows I don’t mean it.

Jen, I've followed your videos for some time. My ancestors came to the USA from the Czechoslovakia are in the 1870s, and settled in Nebraska. They were from the Bruno area and from 50 km west of Prague. My folks, who are both 93, can still talk Czech as well as English. I was interested to hear your husband is from Nebraska. We hope to travel to Czechia soon and use your videos as a proper.

Great video. Fun to watch you 2 together. "Ty vole" - using that at the beginning of every sentence is typical of people with low education and social standing ("mluví jako dlaždič"). Constructive criticism versus noncontructive attacking criticism - this is a concept that many Czech people dont understand (in English there are these standardized descriptions for criticism but in Czech this is not so) - as far as I have seen and heard: other youtubers just disclaim that they will be deleting aggressive or vulgar content or even block that user from writing comments and then they actually do that - boundries/limits/consequences. Oh, and 1% of the population in every country had narcissistic personality disorder - those people attack, criticize with no qualms.

I guess the main confusion with cyrillic is that in English what you call cyrillic is actually "azbuka" in Czech (and other slavic languages). While "cyrilice" is the old slavonic script that was developed in Bulgaria from "hlaholice" which is the script that Konstantin and Methodeus brought to Great Moravia. But at that time the language here wasn't called Czech, it's called Old Church Slavonic. So yeah, I guess technically Czech was never written in neither cyrilice nor azbuka.
