My Japanese ballet instructor, used to gather her mother’s older silk stockings back in Japan when they were real silk. (Circa 1950-60’s). Once she had enough of them she would fold up to use in her pointe shoes as padding.
We used lamb's wool, more when just beginning and less as time went by and we were stronger. It was easy to shape as needed to cover any rough spots in the pointe shoes to avoid blisters, etc.
paper towels would have been a way better choice, i saw a person accidentally drop a roll into the dishwasher and turned it on for a cycle, that roll of paper towel came out perfectly fine and we're good to use after it dried
@@MasterOZero just any paper towel will do, i've been folding them and using them for cotton pads alternatives to remove makeup became they don't fray like most pads and is relatively durable even when wet but should break down easier then other materials when disposed
When I wear Freeds I don't wear toe pads but because I don't like the feeling of the shoe rubbing on my foot I wrap paper towel on them. However, I wrap it on the outside of my tights before putting my shoes on.
Oh my goodness it looks like when you accidentally wash a load of laundry and forget a pale towel napkin in the pocket 😭😂 What a mess! I wonder if it’s ballerinas that maybe don’t dance quite as much that can use them?? Or unless they just pack them in there like crazy lol
hey so whats your opinion on toe pads? my dance school (pre professional) just started telling us to not have toe pads in our shoes even though we’ve been doing it for years. I know that some professional dancers do wear toe pads, and I personally would like to continue wearing them, but my teachers say that not wearing them can help us. Just asking your opinion on the subject :)
I’m not a dancer but I watch too much content from the pros and I think it really just depends on your foot shape, your skin sensitivity, and how much you want to feel the floor. I’m guessing your teachers want you to feel the floor a lot. But if you get blisters or if your second toe is longer than your big toe then why would you not wear some kind of padding?
I bet it works for dancers who don’t actually need toe pads and prefer nothing but need something to absorb sweat without taking up any space maybe. That’s just my guess though and the mess does look like a pain.
Hi Lori. You probably won’t see this comment, but if you do, are there many other professional dancers (ballet or otherwise) in your family? Also, how do you feel about other genres/styles of dance, such as, tap, jazz or (my very favorite) hip-hop? I assume you’re trained in several of them, but ballet is where your heart is truly at. In any case, thank you for all the interesting info you provide and, of course, for the snippets of lovely performances. Take care. 🩰💜
Do you ever use parrafin on your toes. You buy it at the pharmacy and it toughens your skin so you dont get blisters. Guitar users also use it for their finger tips. Its great for mountain climbing too.
I didn't know about it :O I always gave up on learning guitar cuz it hurts so bad on my fingers Does it work for beginner who haven't built their callus yet?
@@sonotahehe yes it does. Don't out too much on because it does really work. Put a tiny bit on and the next day your skin will feel thicker do it a tiny bit again that day and build up for two days should be enough.. also helpful is doing a small session of like 3 minutes doing a few chords or a scale and putting it down and doing it again a few times a day in small sessions. If you do a whole hour lesson one day then that really hurts for a few days so you can't play the next couple days and then you forget and need to do another long practice so its catch 22 ..if you do a tiny bit like 3 to 6 times a day for a week it won't hurt and your fingers will be able to handle a longer lesson. I mean maybe longer or shorter depending on how sensitive your fingers are. But it will thciken your skin. Dont use it too much though if you use loads and then do a big hike you can actually give yourself a deeper blister on your foot so I imagine if you did that with guitar couls also happen. Cos the skin is thick but its only the outer layer that thickens. So if you make a blister it will therfore be deeper. I think it stops the puter layer from falling off or something so it builds up. I found it good for hiking but i never used it for guitar playing i just did the small sessions thing and that worked fine without it. I did make the big mistake of slathering it on my feet and then doing an 8 hour hike in the rain and got a bad blister cos i had not known to only use a small bit. Im like more is better right? Lol! Oops. Sorry i am avoiding tidying my room so im waffling on and on. Gah!
Its like when dancers have like 2 strings left of their disintegrated toe pads but insist that its doing something 😭
😭😭frrr
We don't talk about Maya...(She's from Master Ballet Academy and her toe pads don't even cover her toes anymore 💀 😭)
I know people are thinking about Maya when it comes to toe pads 😅
@@Mentally_illArtist 😭😭😭
CALLING OUT MAYA LIKE THAT.....😭

I love anecdotes like this, how clever and sweet! Thanks for sharing it
You’re pulling a Maya right there, if ykyk 😂
Yeah I dont know how she doesn’t get injured I didn’t see her having bandages or tape for protection 😢
MY EXACT THOUGHT HAHAHA
How about ingrown nails? Do professional dancers get surgery for that or do you have to just deal with the pain?
Some dancers even lose their toenails because of injuries
I just rip mine out
I usually use a pair of nail clippers to reduce my own before it gets ingrown pain a little less pain then an ingrown toenail yes
In my company several of the senior dancers got their toenails removed! I would get ingrown toenails all the time... 😤
Toe pads, worthwhile investment ✔️ Thanks for the update, too.
Hi Iori! Why don’t you try gaynor minden? They last much longer than normal shoes!!

Maybe them blue industrial shop ones???

Love your videos!
Cheer~~~a thick piece of soft material used to reduce friction or jarring, enlarge or change the shape of something, or hold or absorb liquid.😊
My Russian ballet teachers insisted we use nothing but a tissue for padding. Fond memories lol.

@littlebumgorf don't then blisters turn into calluses and potentially corns???😮
That's how I was trained... we weren't allowed to use toe pads so we could "feel the floor"

You probably going to find little bits of tissues between your toes every time you were those shoes now lol

In my day it was tissue and cotton wool. And yes, the mess was the same 😂
Do you ever have nightmares that you missed a performance or were late?
I use that but I put it over my tights so it doesn’t ligit melt 😭😂
When I blow my nose it goes thru!!!!!
Interesting.. Anything that you use has to be super tough to withstand the pounding.. Would thick soft velvet work.. That's pretty tough...

sorry this is random but you seem like such a nice person to be around and dance with 💞
The kleenex tissue was well and truly destroyed....didn't work much..always worth a try though a...
Great for absorbing sweat but not good for literally anything else 😂
😳 ouch
I feel like she was messing with you 😂
The texture would be awful
First! 4mins ago!
Never been first in anything lmao
Not as bad as I expected tbh, seems like a waste of time to me.
Waste of time and tissues 😂😂
@@Life.of.lori. 100% I’d have those the cost of tissues wouldn’t be very cost effective compared to something more long lasting.
Theres a blister or 2 they look sore, but your just like ahh its nothing, not even a mention, such a pro 😅🫶🏻
Your feet are mirror image twins….😆. I know there is a better term for that, but I can’t remember what it is.
