Great advice Ando! I always thought part of fighting was outlasting your opponent, but that does make a lot of sense that in self defense, explosive moves are going to get the job done! now that I think of it, most bad guys aren't going to challenge you to 9 rounds of boxing. they're looking to get those one or two good hits in to lay you out.
I think it’s definitely a good idea to shift the perspective in training from succeeding in sport to surviving in real life. Unless you’re competing for a living! 😁
One of the reasons I think martial arts are good for self defence is based on 30+ years of observation living in the kind of place where a fight breaks out at least once every Friday and Saturday night when out on the town (not me doing the fighting I hasten to add). You see untrained drunks scrapping, and at most it lasts about a minute. It only lasts that long because neither drunk has the skills to control the situation. In martial arts, we learn to bring a situation under control. It doesn't have to involve smashing someone's face, it can be a restraint, or a takedown, to make the aggressor realise they can't win, or if necessary of course there's the precision strikes. But point is, if we train to bring someone under control, then the fight only needs to be a few seconds. On the rare occasions when I've had to intervene, because I don't like seeing anyone get hurt, my martial arts training has paid off in creating peace. It's surprising how quickly the upset drunk calms down when they realise their effort is futile. Remember, not every aggressor is trying to kill you. Sometimes they've just got emotional and made a mistake. We should only beat people up if we genuinely believe there is no other viable option.
One of the games we have in my sessions is called 'escape the building'. The 'building' is the mats, and the only way out is passed the guard (me holding a kick shield). The kids have to attack the shield with enough ferocity to force me back, so they can get through the imaginary door. Some of the kids are tiny and simply don't have enough mass to move me so I have to put on the theatricals to boost their confidence. This is all about rapid bursts of explosive power. The idea that kicking the shield once, or kicking, resetting, kicking again won't work, they have to overwhelm me. The kids love it.
Sensei, I have really liked the editing! It was very fun to watch (I am typing from my laptop so dont know how to add ha ha emoji). And thanks for sharing knowledge.
Most self defence situations would (should?) Be over within a minute. The body would use the anaerobic energy system. Which means you'll be huffing and puffing (and buzzing from adrenalin) after the event..
Fun to watch and great way to point out that training needs to be specific and always with a certain goal in mind. I totally agree with how you justify what is probably more important for martial arts. One point that is missing to me: mobility. Doesn't mean you need to be super mobile for martial arts but I think at least some mobility is also key to martial arts.
All great points however ya as stated for self defense the Cardio’s gotta be aimed for SPRINTING no rests . Occasioanly I’ll get a long distance run or just workout that focuses on steady pace but 90 percent I train my body to out sprint any fool in the streets . Train hard everyone ! Thanks for the video
Yes you do 100%. Doesn’t matter if the conflict is short. If you don’t have least decent cardio you can’t do the technique. The combination of stress, mental focus, and physical exertion is just too much not to be in shape.
Hi Sensei Ando I've been watching your videos for years. Thank you - you've put my mind at rest over many issues. I wondered what you thought about doing high kicks as you get older. I know you have done a video about it, but I have a further question. I'm 55 now and have been practicing martial arts since 13. People have always told me not to do snap, thrusting side kicks because it will ruin my knees. I ignored them and my knees are still perfectly fine. When I was young I loved doing them so much I decided I'd face the consequences later when they arose. They still haven't come - YET! My hypothesis is that it strengthens the joints and ligaments - I know many people who don't kick and their knees and hips don't work anymore. I thought you might have some deep personal or passed down knowledge about what happens to the body as you get older - and if some techniques destroy the joints. Which of course is true, but I mean specifically with high roundhouse kicks and the hips and thrust kicks for the knees. Thank you again. Oh and I should add I'm a typical hobbyist, dad training three times a week not Bill Wallace who I know has had hip replacements ect..!
Hi Maurice! Thank you for the kind words! 🙏🏻 If you still enjoy kicking high, I don’t see a reason to stop. The main issue is being reckless with your body and either overtraining or taking too much impact. Even though I don’t focus on high kicks, I still practice them. I think they’re great exercise and a fun challenge for balance and coordination. I just don’t prioritize them like I did in my 20s. Happy training!👍🏼
@@AndoMierzwa Thank you. Yes - I'm finding in older age it's getting the fine balance between not damaging the body by overdoing it, which puts you back, and not going too easy and not making any progress. What's encouraging is that as I get more robust the more I can push to extremes.
Brilliant video. First of all respect for the impressive video editing rather you do it yourself or not it's very good. And the advice is very good too. To be honest I was never a fan of running, I got used to do it in martial arts classes but it doesn't mean I like it. I like walking a lot more, sure it takes more time for the body to be warm up enough but I find it more fun. What I also love is swimming, lately I don't do that often but I do walk 3 times a week for an hour. Not chasing after certain time or for distance just for myself. Now of course in a martial arts class there is no time for that, but let me just say that cardio is important for a good health rather than the martial arts themselves. And I hear a lot of people say- "You must be very fast for martial arts!" and it's true that speed helps, but for instance I can't be fast so I use my brain more in a situation and power, I focus a lot on power in both meanings and I can reach an okay speed but not like people who are fast. So the point is and this is my advice- When you know you are lacking in one tool, you better sharpen the rest of your tools to cover up the loss and you will be fine.
In the Army most of the time it is a sprint and I wondered why we did four mile trail runs? Well, if your position gets overrun you may have to a--- out. You also just need endurance to walk around with 80 lbs of gear or constantly sprint to cover. A good warrior trains it all because what you think is going to be quick may turn into a long battle.
My instructors have warned me that our Black Belt test is physically demanding, requiring good cardio and great hydration. I'm 73 and started Tang Soo Do at 68. During Covid I put on an extra 10 pounds that has been hard to lose. Hopefully, the Summer months will allow me to drop a few pounds and increase my activity level.
Sensei Ando, could you plz make a video on: how to increase ur agility when training alone. I recently joined a BJJ class and I've been beaten every time by everyone for weeks. So I was told to work on m agility at home and work on the techniques at the dojo.

Self defense could mean a million things. A turtle is great at self defense. It has a shell. You have to narrow the context into fighting. Like in a ring. Boxing is the perfect model for martial art. Rocky I. Rocky lifted weights and ran. Boy can Stallone run. In Rocky III he swam too. Boxers have that renaissance approach to training.
Light jog or speed walk good enough. Your strength or cardio counts for nothing when u get knocked out in 2 seconds, unless you got an open field to run circle
