- Festo SmartInversion -- flying geometrical band with inversion drive
SmartInversion is a helium-filled flying object that moves through the air by turning inside-out. This constant, rhythmically pulsating movement is known as inversion and gives the flight model its name.

Fire the idiot editor who screwed up this otherwise excellent video... please? It really detracts from my admiration of Festo.
Festo keeps making cool stuff.
i can't even tell what the proper real time speed of that thing is.
Now make it a mylar penguin.
A smartphone is a real computer. Touchscreen makes it cheap to build and modify any interface controls and makes it easy to encode the movement information in any way you want. Using a smart phone as a controller is brilliant.
dammit, enough with the fancy video cuts, I just wanna see the thing fly, okay?
This is just one example of how computer-assisted robotic design will fundamentally change everything we know ..
1st thing i noticed was the super chilled remix of Grandmaster Flash - White Lines in the back ground aha
damn exactly what I was thinking. GREAT gadget HORRIBLE video. I just want to see it go all the hurky jerky was downright painful to watch. and very annoying.
Fire your video editor
extremely annoying to watch r comprehend the possibility of actual mechanical validation, does it truly work or Not? as it's just not believable thru this manipulation of illogical movement...
Please show us the actual movements and flight...???
Peace to you...
The video on spiegel.de is the same (read the credits at the end). They added a spoken description in German. And yes, it is better when one understands German.
That would be a very cool video, if it wasn´t for the incredibly annoying MTV like editing. Would it have been so hard to let us watch the thing in action for five seconds without constantly speeding the video up, slowing it down, blurring it, letting it run backwards and that even more annoying stop-motion effect?
the new video makes the reason for the editing all to clear ... that thing barely moves forward, instead they made the camera change position to create the optical illusion that it is moving forward ... still fascinating, but please stop playing the viewrs for fools.
If I don't see a version in real time, I'm gonna have to assume that it's fake. Can't even tell how fast it's revoloving. Either the editor has high-speed cameras and doesn't know how to properly use them or it's a not-so-clever hoax.
Amen. And add to that the incredible lack of contrast inherent in filming an object that is clear material stretched across metal inside a building made of clear material stretched across metal, and you can barely tell what's going on.
My theory is that it doesn't fly in any direction very well and just kind of flops around in the air. They wanted to get the idea across that you could actually control this thing to an extent, hence the annoying editing.
Ha! they made it controllable with a smart phone.
20 years from now kids will be flying these with their phones instead of flying conventional kites with spools of string.
I logged into my UA-cam account for the first time in months just so I can "thumbs down" the video (mind you, not the invention), and say the video was shi*
Look closely at 0:50 - he isn't actually using an app on his iPhone, he's just tapping on a picture (see the buttons at the top and bottom of the screen).
Looks like I'm not the only one who got really furious about the editing. It is super annoying that you barely ever get to see it moving in realtime.
Terrible video editing - it's like the director/editor wanted to make a music video or video art piece, not to document a unique avionics device.
WTF -- looks like a cool device but the video sucks. Protip - when doing product demos, you might let the viewer actually SEE the product.
Actually, the buttons may just act like anchor points, and the space in between serve as the real controller, like a slider.
Annoying, I agree, but try listening to some trippy music with it and it all makes sense. Bushwacka! - Healer worked for me.
I can see how the video-style is totally annoying to those wanting to watch it work. The video appears to be purely promotional.
Doesn't look like this thing actually flies, looks like they threw it up into the air and ran the video back and forth.
it could have some faces with thin solar panels and be all day long used on ads & promos & signs in stores... wooow
Exactly. This thing is more than cool enough without editing or special effects. Editing is disturbing the experience.
So, this is really cool and all, but honestly, what possible applications could there be for something like this??
Am I the only one who isn't upset with the editing, just annoyed trying to find a fucking use for that thing?
All of them - the video director, the camera person and the person who edited the video - should be fired.
How can you lunch that incredible thing into the air? That's amazing!
Can you put a new video of this thing flying in real time without the crappy editing?
I would never control that contraption with a smartphone. Get a real computer transmitter.
yeah, the editing makes this otherwise awesome video incredibly annoying to watch.
Cool machine, but whoever perpetrated that video should be ashamed of themselves.
Anybody else think the music sounds like "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash?
My first thought exactely. Reminds a lot of that Polygon-Angel (Ramiel?)
Sure. It starts innocent-looking but in the end... /watch?v=q8HqgM1qcdo
what Boards of Canada songs were mashed up in the background music?
This would be so unusable outside. Or anywhere with air currents.
I'd love to watch it fly without 2000 jumpcuts and timewarps =\
Holy crap it's a Lovecraft monster with alien geometries
Man, that's just like your opinion. I like it very much!
techno background song rips off Melle Mel a bit too much
Hush- we're trying to watch the floaty bendy thingy.
What is the name of the music in the background?
Am I just not allowed to see it at normal speed?
I was about to write the same kind of comment...
what ever this is,i want it in my living room.
I'd like to see how this sort of design would go for underwater propulsion (without the helium, of course, something neutrally bouyant).
Looks like a jellyfish...I want one! :)
They need a bigger romp room.
Ko hiểu là cái gì luôn
Why is the whole video overexposed?
Looks like something out of Star Fox
I can't put my finger in it, but there's something very sexual about this invention... xD
Great invention, terrible video.
How does this fare in the wind?
i made one of these out of paper like 3 years ago... now i understand everything.
Wonder if the editor got fired
I came here just to say this.
Was thinking the same haha :)
That is a flying tesseract
When i think to a good future, i thint at things like this... :)
Good Job guys!
Haha thats exactly what I thought!
How does it stay in the air btw....
Then how did you comment?
Fox! get this guy off me!
What you want to achieve ?
カメラの位置が悪い。編集もヒドイ。
Cool!!
But,how much?
DO A BARREL ROLL!!
White lines song.
like a jellybird
NGE anyone! !!!
fuck yes
Decepticons
Brilliant!
genius!
Yup.
Blood Type Blue, it's an Angel.
What in tarnation is this...
I want to work at festo!
sorry "launch" not "lunch" T_T
Helium.
Futuristic
amazing!
Stop letting hipsters edit videos!
the last line was pre-emptive.
