Worked for me. Took out an old laptop which years ago I have updated with ubuntu. For the life of me I could not remember the password. This video did it for me. Thank you.

Well done, Carly. Thank you for a wonderfully clear tutorial!! Third method (mounting sda8 on /mnt) worked for me on old installation of Mint 13, which I still use because I cannot get Amazon Kindle-for-PC to run in wine on later versions pf Mint.

Thank you !!! I am writing my bachelor paperwork and my brand new Lenovo simply committed suicide. I grabbed my 10 years old asus - unused for the last couple of years- and it needed the password. Your first method works perfectly!!! Thank you so much!!

Well done! Good tips. I had a devil of a time entering single-user mode by adding the runlevel to the end of the kernel line. It worked when I changed it from
    kernel ... ro
    to
    kernel ... rw init=/bin/bash
The 3 dots (...) mean do not change what was there.
    Bravo!

Thanks. I caught the 1st Half of the fix somewhere else but I found out here how to finish the job of assigning passwords on the terminal screen. And it was some university teacher Dionne the video. He didn't show how to do that. Mine was a ubuntu cinnamon /xubuntu xfce combo job. Thanks a million

I too am on a "trashed" computer (found in building during demolition). I didn't even try to get into the windows mess. Just jammed some Linux onto it. But then I started distro-hopping...and got jammed up on passwd! Fixed now.
