Well done! Good tips. I had a devil of a time entering single-user mode by adding the runlevel to the end of the kernel line. It worked when I changed it from kernel ... ro to kernel ... rw init=/bin/bash The 3 dots (...) mean do not change what was there. Bravo!
Thanks. I caught the 1st Half of the fix somewhere else but I found out here how to finish the job of assigning passwords on the terminal screen. And it was some university teacher Dionne the video. He didn't show how to do that. Mine was a ubuntu cinnamon /xubuntu xfce combo job. Thanks a million
I too am on a "trashed" computer (found in building during demolition). I didn't even try to get into the windows mess. Just jammed some Linux onto it. But then I started distro-hopping...and got jammed up on passwd! Fixed now.

To open GRUB menu reboot the system and hold left "Shift" key, when system begins to load. I didn't know how to do that, so i left this comment if some one doesn't know how to open GRUB menu.

Used on Linux Mint 19.1 successfully.
This works even in 2018 with the latest linux version you just need to write exactly whats written in his config after pressing e method 1
