This was my Touareg and I chased the problem for almost a year. I got tired of ruining the batteries and decided to let the true electrical guru fix it. Ivan did a fantastic job and communicated with me during the entire process. I couldn’t of asked for better service. I definitely was not taking it to a VW stealership. It’s now back to being a dependable awesome 32 mpg terrific vehicle. Thanks again Ivan!!
Hi Phil, thank you for the feedback! Was definitely a lengthy process, but well worth-it to get the car back to a reliable state :)
Gotta be a VW diehard to keep this vehicle thru all this for sure! Farfegnugen
I had the exact same problem with my gfs touareg same year and engine
The dealer told me it was cause i changed the truck battery with out doing a battery adapt
After they did that the draw was gone
@@pl3pl3 I did that but I didn’t fix the problem.
gotta be so reassuring that you got someone like Ivan doing the deed on your vehicle, cause i'd still be chasing and firing off the parts cannon for a pesky draw.
excellent system diagnosis well done
Noticed the fuse with a tracking Rf chip? Really? That would disturb me if found in any of my vehicles?😮
Just when you thought nobody would ever out$#!tty Chrysler stuffing the battery for the 200 and Avenger in the driver's side front fender, along comes VW. Unbelievable.
I absolutely love Euro cars, but I won't pretend for a second that they aren't humongous pains in the ass to work on.
Good evening gentlemen, I hope you are well, as my level of English is limited, I can't understand the principle, so could you please enlighten me?
Parasitic drains can be one of the most challenging and time consuming faults to find but you handled it like a Boss!
Awsome case study Ivan!
Great to read the feedback from the consumer!
Thank you for the kind words Dan! Do you come across many parasitic draws? Do you have a similar strategy? 🙂
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics believe it or not but my next video is going to be a parasitic drain on a Mercedes GL 500.
@@Diagnosedan Can't wait!
@@Diagnosedan that was a good one!
Thanks for showing me all the cars to never buy.........lol
No problem 👍
Cool to watch this! I just solved a 2 amp draw on an 03 Mercedes E320 yesterday. Went through a very very similar process. Turned out it was the passenger seat adjustment module keeping a network awake on it. Had a solid 8 hours into solving it! Challenging to say the least!
"..The seat is still awake." Imagine what a 2023 must be like. That was awesome Ivan!
If it's any way similar to woke politics, it will suck.
Instead of the obnoxious noises they all make when you turn the key or whatever it is they give you now it will play a clip of Kyle McLaughlin saying " The sleeper has awakened." And the headlights will be a cobalt blue.
This is the first time I've commented on one of your videos because I felt the need to tell you that you absolutely kicked ass on this one. Super logical with your skill and research, then bang! Excellent.
Thank you for the feedback 🙏
If the Touareg is anything like my Q7 of the same generation (it probably is), the seat can be tilted out of the way if you just remove the front two triple squares. It's kinda tight (sucks pulling out the ~70lb battery) but it's easier than taking the entire seat off.
Eh what's another 2 bolts and connectors 😅
brilliant detective work. one of hardest to diagnose issues i’ve ever seen. your knowledge & persistence paid off.
Just goes to show that the best diagnostic tool is still the smart's between the ears. Nice work Ivan, you certainly earned your pay on this one.
Hi Ivan, patience is a virtue you have in abundance you need for your work. Many thanks from UK.
This is the only content I can stand watching anymore.
Isn't dangerous in case of an accident, car battery acid to spill everywhere in the cabin?
Ivan, love your new toys. Better yet watching you use them with your great skill. Very methodical and rewarding for sure. Amazing
I love tools that make the diagnostic process more efficient and accurate 🙂
Thanks for taking us along for the ride on this adventure Ivan. it's a pleasure to watch you work. Tricky, troublesome car says: "Hold My Beer". Ivan says: "Sit down. I got this". lol
Glad you enjoyed it 😁
It amazes me how you have the resources you need organized, and you can switch so efficiently between them. The Wi-Fi parasitic draw device is killer! I can't wait to hear the price of the passenger door module and see you dig into the door for it! Simply amazing to see you solve these puzzles.
Awesome diagnosis, Ivan! Very thorough and scientific. Your diagnostic equipment is very impressive and I think that all automotive technicians around the world should be watching these videos closely. It seems to me that with the ever increasing number of gadgets and modules that manufacturers are putting into cars, your demonstrated use of diagnostic tools and techniques will be absolute "must-haves" in the future! 👍

Are you sure it's a module, not perhaps an input/output pertaining to that specific module? I have been down that road myself, calling a module when it was in fact an input issue into the module. My next step would be uncovering that module, using jumpers, only connecting power, ground and comms.if problem still there, it's a module, if not, more diag time needed.
Wow very interesting case, last year have a similar problem in a 2017 F350 6.7l drained the batteries over night (the problem was the Passanger front window module regulator).blessings
I think the little aftermarket 3amp fuse was for a GPS. I have seen them be installed like that. They usually tuck them way up behind the dash. 😂
GPS tracker for loan or buy here pay car lots
AUDI Q7 that same year range suffer from water intrusion rear quarter windows right hand side, usually amp is back there with water intrusion and corrosion... also the rain sensor in the windsheild and also the clusters cause parasitic draws. I always use infrared camera first saves alot of time. Soon I'm going to put together of a couple of those wifi loggers maybe Like 5 of them, I'm getting some custom PCB done to try and incorporate all parts on 1 pcb to board.
2004 V10 Touareg, 500K miles. Dreaded battery drain problem. Occurred at the same time my outside door lock. button stopped locking the car. I put a amp meter on the battery under the seat (which is easy to flip up the seat). And traced the power usage by pulling fuses and relays. Turned out to be a short in the driver side door handle outside button. It became corroded. So the car thought the button was being pushed all the time. Thus activating all the key-fob radios. 5 amp drain, 24 hours a day. Devours batteries, kills the alternator. I peeled open the button, ripped out the surface mount switch and epoxy filled it. I get no thrill using that button.
Hmm, someone is not going to be happy that you might have found a ' Tracker '- GPS, I gather. As always such great deductive reasoning and clear explanation.
Wow, that's crazy to find the fault with the scope and look for the right module! Its nice tp have the wifi tracker to check the amp draws. Awesome video ivan!
Another great video ,makes you think the door module could be in a vulnerable position for water ingress . I grew up years ago learning Fahrenheit and changed to Celsius when Australia changed to metric in the seventies . Find Celsius so much easier based on freezing and boiling points of water for zero to one hundred degrees. Hopefully you get to replace the module and we can see it all work correctly.
Awesome Friday night! What a nice surprise when this one popped up. Darwin was watching it with me, and he usually is only interested in food, a box to crawl in, or a mouse to chase.
Good design for the battery if you stop and think about it. What is the most common battery issue, cold weather. The battery placed under the seat is one of the most intelligent places for it. The size is a bonus too. You don't have to worry about under power ever. Everyone complains about engineering but IMO, 4 seat bolts to get to a gigantic battery is not a huge deal
It's a Volkswagen, it's supposed to break.
They always break.
They never work.
They're supposed to have all the pretty lights on the dashboard on.
Verified the same symptoms and found the same issue with a Touareg I am working on. Very deceiving when other modules are drawing more amps, but not necessarily causing the CAN bus to stay awake! Always good to check someone else's issues first to see if you have the same issue!
Touareg in the UK has two bolts under the carpeted plastic trim, remove these and remove rear runner plastic trims and it folds up to allow full access Ivan.
Interesting... This one had 4 bolts and 2 hard rails
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Hey Ivan, love your videos, I’ve seen them all!!
I have to say some of your repairs require balls of steel. Total respect!!
Yours may be too early, but found a visual reference which may help others getting access to the battery.
What the video does not show is if you remove the rear runner plastic trims then fold backrest forward, the seat swings right back.
ua-cam.com/video/-B9Vx82tbw0/v-deo.html
Why do you have to put a FOB in the hole...... classic....
And that battery .... is like a $240 battery....
In a certain American car the DVD player had an error which crashed the entertainment bus. And the car manufacturer had also put the anti-lock brakes on the same bus. Yikes! So the DVD player could make the anti-lock brakes not work. Actually, (I say sheepishly) it was my companies DVD player that did the deed. But all I had to do was add a pullup resistor and it was fixed. But the paperwork was massive. My boss was a genius with obfuscation and when he explained the issue to the car company they thought it was all their fault. Well it kinda was. We crashed the entertainment bus but they put the brakes on that bus.
The award for the dumbest battery location goes to VW 🏆
Hi the the UK we have a tracker that can be fitted to the car for young drivers to keep a eye on there driving. It's a small black box and it has a 3amp fuse. I don't know if car insurance company use them over there
Dont even think about the 06 V10 edition. 2x batteries and the wonderful Kessy module
Friday night and a pleasant surprise, a Pine Hollow video, love Ivan's work. Not going to miss this, part 1, oh boy, multi parts !!
Brother, how do you keep a battery maintainer when doing all the testing?
Thanks, awesome video as always
God Bless
It's connected to the battery posts directly 👍
I'm impressed also with your improving editing skills, as it was fairly easy to follow, but one wouldn't know this diagnostic took 5 hours; I assume much of that time is reading wiring diagrams and making lists of modules. IOW all the boring prep which makes the magic look easy.
4 amp draw, are you sure it's a draw and not battery maintainer under the hood charging said battery. 😂
Everyone needs two of those vw's. So you can dig a hole with one and bury it with the other one. Putting a battery under the seat is pure stupidity, yet people buy that foreign sh*t. That has always been a puzzle to me.
My wife really liked riding in it 😅
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Oh my. Double entendre? A little stray voltage running wildly through the seats?
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 🤣🤣🤣🤣
if you dont understand/like something, it does not mean it stupid
@@kdudutse Chrysler or even worse because they put it under the wheel well but they should all just keep it in the engine bay where it belongs.
I've done loads of f those . Might get lucky and find lost coins lol. Ju as t tip the seat back . And Yes the battery is a pain
All that bs just for the customer to "look fancy" in a VW 🤡🤡🤡🤡😂
before watching this video, i am guessing that it is the keyless entry and start box, located close to the pedals, that is at fault.
stupid expensive to buy, but changing a few components, worth pennies, usualy brings it back to life.
so i was wrong,,, not a kessy problem. good work Ivan.
Wouldn't it be nice if the scan tools could allow us to shut down modules individually in order to narrow down a parasitic draw?
Привет Иван! Впервые увидел у тебя в кадре оригинальные схемы VAG. Какое впечатление у тебя осталось от оригинального стиля электросхем VAG ?
Я, много лет на них смотрю и до сих пор ненавижу :)))))
I thought a dead battery was a PIA in my boxster. I would have replaced that battery once then replaced the car.
Nice work Ivan. Kinda crazy that how these modules can be rebooted to normal like they are as complex as a laptop!! They need a safe mode to test each modules health including a sleep mode misfire counter. The aftermarket mystery device hopefully wasn't triggering a module awake or into non sleep mode.
That will add even more complexity. 😁 🙃
Why would anyone put a lead acid battery underneath the driver seat? Heck, who would buy a car with one? lol
That's why I love my old car it only has one module in it. an ignition module. No power seats or windows an am radio dimmer switch on the floor one speed wipers no ac
An American that prefers Celsius to Fahrenheit. Finally!
it's probanly some insurance tracker to check speed movements etc I aam always super suspicious of any tap i ins near the dlc lesd an easy live to find for some billy no mates afterr market tracker fitter
Interesting - that might have got me. I probably would have started chasing the cluster or the HVAC controls instead of going to the network first.
Being a door module you wonder if the car got rained on at some point and some corrosion got into the module through the switch.
I thought you had the thermal imager set to celsius because it was a European vehicle.
It would be cool to see a non-stop time lapse on a job like this. With you also doing the research and diagram lookups all in the same shot. Like an overhead view of the entire garage or something. Just to show how much time is spent on crawling around the car, vs how much time is spent digging through the data on the computer, etc. I think it would make for a very interesting video on it's own. Just a time lapse view, from the upper corner of your garage, looking down on the whole case study.
I support this idea! And a real-time counter in the frame.
How do you see how fast your tech can run? Ask him to repair your Volkswagen!
Love your Channel. The only one américan who do european cars
I have a 2017 Range Rover Sport (3.) L diesel) and it was a no start a week ago. Cluster was a Christmas tree...anyway it seemed to be a battery issue so I started diagnosing. Similar to an issue you had a while ago where the Autel was showing 11.4 v but the battery actually had 12.4 v. I started suspecting either the Gateway (GWM) or the module on the battery, but they both tested OK. It turned out that water had gotten into the ECM and destroyed it...but that's not why I'm commenting...
It turns out that JLR uses a Bosch system, which is what I assume is on this VW. Buried in the workshop manual is a statement that you should only charge the vehicle via the post under the hood, and NOT directly at the battery. The reason given was that it will likely lead to failure of the BMS - the battery maintenance module that is attached to the negative post of the battery. At one point you had considered doing that, and I just wanted to pass along that Bosch says not to.
Iv'e repair loads of KESSY units on these, the problem is, depending on the amount of water ingress, the canbus activation is random and hard to trace. Always worth popping the case open and checking for the killer greenies...😄😄😄
KESSY?
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Keyless entry module. It's supposed to sit in the background and monitor keyless entry, 2 Mosfets start playing up, and it draws power randomly. Impossible to datalog, use visual inspection.
@@proluxelectronics7419 I hate the KESSY systems. Nowdays lot of theft kessy cars from Toyota (RAV4)
This is why I own the most simple vehicles no extra luxury items. The more options you have the more that can go wrong.
You love it. It's so challenging and exciting and you probably get excited in the morning to go and solve a case. 🤣
When are you moving to Texas? I need a good car guy!
Feb 18th. 7th LIKE 👍 of the month. 🤠🇺🇸
What is that aftermarket "whatever"? Does the customer know about it? Is it news to him? A tracking device? Enquiring minds want to know.
Customer had no idea what it was 🤣
Scan tool showed v10 but it's a v6
Another case closed by detective Ivan.
Apparently VW never learned that putting batteries under seats is a gigantic pain in the arse. My '59 beetle had it under the rear seat which was easier to get to but still an idiotic idea. Good work Ivan. Cheers from Utah
Why does this car need this oversized battery?
Ivan at it again! I wish you’d show how you find the service information to help you narrow down the problem like wiring diagrams and module powers etc.. but I guess it’d make the video twice as long. Props to you with the grit!
@T.J. Kong Thanks for the info. One question, do you have the "Alldata DIY" subscription? I was thinking about getting it for my cars but wasn't sure if the DIY version gives all the info as in Ivan's professional version.
If you have the DIY subscription, are you saying it has the info in that much detail?
@@SsdBlig I think the "DIY" subscription is limited to one vehicle model, but has the full amount of information.
Celsius is just as arbitrary as Fahrenheit since you can start where you want and end where you want….so why use what you are not used to? As Ivan does…do what YOU want.
I'm actually used to Celcius lol
Did u latch door closed with a screwdriver while u tested for parasitic drain? On a Vw the canbus controller goes to sleep after many minutes once it sees door closed.
Please watch the video 😅
Cheat for Celsius to Farenheit is to know 10 C is 50 F and every 5 degrees C is 9 degrees in F. Such as 15 C is 59 F
That little fuse under the driver's side dashboard goes to a ' low jack ' tracking system, for police to locate the vehicle if " stolen ".
Thoroughly enjoyed the process! Very curious about the aftermarket parasitic wiring. A remote starter possibly? Great video as always!
It was a tracking device. I asked Ivan to just keep the fuse pulled. I’ve no idea who installed it. I’m guessing the CIA.
Impressive Ivan, excellent diagnostic skills.👍👍
Waay too many modules in that VW Turdrig....LOL....good ole Eurotrash
Just unnecessarily complicated, these cars are prime examples of a vehicle trying to be everything to everyone, luxury, sport, utility we can forget about reliability, fuel economy and value
Fuel economy is great... It's a diesel!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics That really depends on the cost per mile...and diesel has been pretty damn expensive.
New cars are horrible. You are not.
Unbelievable. I had also an intermitted draw on my car for a long time. After a long diagnosis following your strategies (also 2A current measured by an amp clamb) for parasitic draws I identified the same module on my audi a6 4g to be the problem. A reprogrammed used ebay replacement did solve the problem. I do not want to imagine how much a dealer would have been charged to find and repair this issue.
I'm sure they would never find it 😅
Another reason to buy a scope. I finally broke down and bought one. Thanks to watching this great content! I'm an advanced DIY guy and was a BMW a couple decades ago. Thanks Ivan, great video and your process of elimination was really well done.
Just use fahrenheit , your not a scientist, your a mechanic, LOL
I'm a scientist and a mechanic :)
Vw= high maintainance
What was that wifi data logger?
so??did you ever start it back up and see if it started acting up again..
That's why there's a Part 2 haha
I sure the seat tilts back 🤣🤣😄
I'm already irritated at this car by the fact that you need to REMOVE the driver's seat to get to the battery AND need a wacky socket to do so.... Arrrrrgh!
Imagine being an honest Volkswagen car salesman and the customer asks how do you access the battery? ...and they run away from the dealership as fast as they can...
AutoZone will do it for free _and_ they'll let the new guy do it.
Engineer. Think of ways to annoy the mechanics … & make money for dealerships
Germans
Well better than the Chrysler where the battery is behind the bumper…. Or the Volvo that have to take apart the whole front of the car to get to the alternator….
Is there a switch on the door to tell the system whether it is open or closed? Is it on that fuse, and could it be broken? They are usually kinda flimsy.
I had a trunk lid switch get broken, causing a draw.
My mercedes battery is as big as that one, but it's a gas engine. Diesels can draw a lot of juice starting when it's really cold out, so I can see it having that large of a battery.
I think that's just a downright stupid place to put the battery!
If lights turn off when door is latched then switch is OK 🙂
1.5 hahaha
switch on the door
Yeah Celsius !
Mistwagen tun, was sie am besten können.
Arent the modules all fused? Why not pull fuses gill the draw drops
You have to isolate the networks first by disconnecting the gateway, and see which one stays awake (using an oscilloscope). Then write down the modules on the network and only THEN start pulling the appropriate fuses, one at a time. Basically the exact process I showed in the video, no shortcuts! :)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 👍
PATIANTS OF A SAINT IVAN. no parts cannon or super swapping required today .bet your glad it's all on video or it might be tricky charging all that labor for pulling a fuse and then putting it back in 🤨🤔😂
many diesel cars use those H8 (group 49) batteries. my Ford diesel truck uses TWO full sized batteries.
Well done they seat bolts are single use just to complicate things.Typical modern car issues. Keep up the good work Ivan 👌
VW in their latest EV's have factory serial coded components, it is an overall over complicated firmware & software. Ivan's video shows today where it all started... Over digital complicated network to save? a few wire runs. Then you wonder why you need to program new windows winders etc. Modern cars will be scrapped earlier while being easier to build for manufacturers.
