    Beautiful ota.
    Like you, I have the 200p newtonian.
    Then, I bought a 102mm f7 refractor acromat. For ease of use on balcony, and carry on for air travel.
    Seems refractors often come, after large newtonians.

    Ahh yes a nice long refractor with good light grasp to boot, nice!! , must say a much underrated bit of kit in these days of fancy glass optics, I still have a smaller Prinz Astral 500 given to me by my brother in the mid 70s tucked away, I just loved sky watching with mates in my mums backyard, we could see the milky way then even living near to Portsmouth, Have fun atb Tom...

      Hey thanks Tom! I'm hoping the Evo120 will make a good all round no fuss observing scope. I've also had the pleasure of owning a couple of classic circle T and circle K Japanese achros in the past and can totally understand why you have such fond memories : ) Thanks for your comment, and I'm hoping to have plenty of fun once these 3 back to back storms fizzle out.

      No way! I didn't realise you started off with an Evo120 Luke! snap to some extent, an EVO120 was the first refractor I ever bought! I got my first one from Beacon Hill on an EQ5 mount back in 2005, the old blue livery. Sold it when I moved into a one bed flat though because it totally dominated the living space lol I always said I would get another when I had the space, and I've got lots of little experiments lined up :D Clear skies mate : )

    I bought a dielectric 2" diagonal for $119 US and it is quite nice, made in Taiwan by GSO. As far as an Achromat vs. an Apochromat it depends a lot on the length too. I've found a light yellow #8 or light yellow/green #11 gets rid of blue fringe if it bothers you. I've bought two Sky Watcher Maksutov, a 102 and 127 and BOTH of them came with Kellner eyepieces. I heard birds when I opened the boxes they came in, Cheep Cheep Cheep!!!

    Hi Chris, thanks for the video. It is good to have videos of not too expensive gear and trumps some of the not uncommon "Hey, I had $20,000 to spend and imaged this nebula great..." videos.
    The Finder looks ideal. A Right Angle Finder would add to the cost, be heavier and not as easy to use - like bringing a pair of binoculars up to your aye to find a target. Try that, when looking in to a mirror at the same time! Simon

    Good luck with your Sky-Watcher 120 Evostar, I'm sure you will enjoy it. I've never owned an ED telescope, although I would love to have one someday. That said, I have been using achromats for all of my life (50 years) since 13 years old and they have provided me with great views and excellent service. I know CA is a concern, but I"ve only now begun to do astrophotography and I will continue to use my achromats to their fullest capability before I finally buy my first ED scope. Best wishes to you.

      Hey Jay, yeah me too! they look like a 'proper' telescope but more importantly the view they show can be very aesthetically pleasing with pin prick tight stars on a velvety black background.
      Snap! I too was considering the 6" f/8 as I've always wanted to try one but chose the 120mm because I could mount it on an EQ5 whereas you really need something like an HEQ5 with pier extension for the 6".
      I used to have the Bresser 127L on a SkyTee with pier extension, the views where great but a real workout to setup and tear down.
      You'll grow your biceps if you go for the 6" Jason :D cheers fella :)

Plus 20% UK tax is deducted if you select anywhere other than the UK at the checkout, so the scope would actually cost you £263, or $321 by todays exchange rate in US Dollars. Thanks again for the suggestion. Who knows I may change my mind some day. years ago I had an Orion 127mm with mount, but I could never get it Polar aligned because of light pollution, so I had too much trouble getting use of its tracking. Plus shake was horrible from the tripod it came with.

    That ota neeeds a Baader Contrast Booster. I bought one and will keep the filter for life. It's a little dull yellowish but the view is much more defined. I tried the filter on my EOSD and it mostly auto white balanced it out, a little tweek of color balance and any achromat is almost as good as an APO. Big competition for the low cost ED ota's.

    Isn’t a Bresser achromat 127/1200 mm F9.4 actually better than this Skywatcher 120/1000 mm F8.3 because of the bigger aperture and higher F-ratio for better color correction and sharpness ?

    • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista  11 місяців тому +1

      The Bresser 127L is better, I regret selling mine but it was a beast that required a fair bit of setting up and storage space. You can see mine on a SkyTee plus 16" pillar extension here: www.cloudynights.com/topic/556723-new-bresser-long-focus-achromatic-refractors/page-6 The Evo120 is relatively grab and go by comparison....but that Bresser weren't half well corrected and I probably should have kept it.

    That looks a great scope Chris! I have the 4 inch or 102 mm version of this one but i've always had a problem with the focuser, it has a fair bit of play in it and when you get correct focus and try to lock it the locking screw just moves the focuser a bit so that it moves out of focus. How did you find the focuser in your refractor?

    • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista  2 роки тому +2

      Hey mate! Mines not too bad in terms of play, you can try adjusting the 4 screws on the underside but if that doesn't work the scope might be a good candidate for the Dual Speed 2 Crayford upgrade upgrade: www.firstlightoptics.com/skywatcher-focusers/dual-speed-2-crayford-focuser-for-sky-watcher-refractors/ref/astrolasvista/
      If there's too much slack in the focuser it will move when you try and lock, but I think the plate on the bottom controls the pressure of the pinion on the rack so worth tweaking the screws first to see if it makes any difference or not?

      I mainly use 1.25" eyepieces. The only disadvantage is that you cannot have ultra wide apparent field of views with long focal length / low power 1.25" eyepieces, for example, you are limited to 52 degrees with a 32mm 1.25" eye pieces. This isn't a problem in most cases, and you can still use ultra wide fields of view at shorter focal lengths E.g 82 degrees at 14mm.

      @Astrolavista  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Andrew, I'm sure you'll enjoy either but it really is a tough decision that hinges on whether you'll end up more into visual or imaging? You should be able to take up to 30 second exposures with the Dob before field rotation kicks in so if just doing casual imaging you could have a lot of fun with that. The EQ5 Pro you can add guiding and go deeper with much longer exposures but that setup is less convenience for visual, the eyepiece can end up on some odd positions when using a large reflector an an EQ mount.
