I originally went into my VW Dealer to look at the new Tiguans and walked away with a white Manual Golf GTI 40years...... i fell in love with the look of it, but was sold after driving it. Love driving it, especially into the corners.... great review by the way...
Luke Sanders Congratulations for Awesomety! I got the one in Carboon Steel Grey Metallic. DSG, DCC, Sunroof, Dynaudio & a few other options :) Whats your options by the way?
Hi Luke - that is an epic story. Glad you went with your heart and bought a GTI. They really are a do-everything car, which is why I loved the 40 Years, which feels particularly special. Thanks for your feedback; glad you enjoyed the video.
Luke Sanders love your story. I almost did the same. I went to test drive a Tiguan, got talked into test driving a 40 years... somehow I resisted it but picked one up a year later used. Absolutely love it.
I own this car! But its funny how they change the model name.. In Australia its called "40 Years" & here in Europe & ithink rest of the world its called "Clubsport".
Still my favorite Golf this one, that cool bodykit and with those cloth seats, the classic analogue dials and even a manual perfect hands down betters the 7.5 GTI and R imo.
Honest and emotional review. I like it, both the car and review. Currently i am considering buying a mk7 golf r, but after I saw your review, i would like to go for a 40 years. Keep going mate, you are simply the BEST car reviewer in oz.
great review as always, you recently reviewed an evo final edition which i am currently owning one, i am thinking to change it and get this golf clubsport or a focus rs, i am only worried about the performance of this golf if it can guarantee the same fun as the evo does
+Steven Lower Good point - VW Aus have briefed us a number of times over the last year about their plans to improve after sales service. As an owner myself, I hoping they are successful!
OfficialMINIm i own it & all i can say i cant complain on the 20 hp less only from S model.. iknow its still diffrent, but one thing i wodent like is the harder suspension in S. Also i need the backseats, esp coz i payed extra for full leather seats. Went with DSG, DCC, Sunroof, Dynaudio & few other options. This is one heck of a ride & dont forget the R engines tuning capabilities... Normal tune can give you bout 370 hp while if your crazy enough, swapping the turbocharger & few other stuff can give you from 470-522 Horsepowers at the moment... ;)
3DFX i wouldve went for the dsg too. I found out the S model only comes with a stick shift. But the VW 6 speed dsgs are so brilliant i rather have the fart box in these lol good on u its one of the nicest front wheel drive machines out there!
OfficialMINIm True that. i owned a Golf GT R-Line before with stick. Loved it, but theres soo many benefits with automatic. Some are for safety others are for performance (if u tune your engine, etcetera) And since the DSG is dual clutch, i can drive with gear shifters by the steering wheel if i like drive more sporty to. You drive VW yourself by the way?
3DFX i get what you mean! I drive a mazda 3 but i do have a very close friend that drives a mk 7 golf r and man theyre impressive cars. If i ever got one id get the dsg over the stick shift any day.
I'm really curious how you'd review the Golf R, any particular reasons you'd pick the 40 Years over the R? I'm at a dilemma myself and need to make a choice before end of year. Help!
I assume you're thinking preowned GTI 40 Years vs preowned Golf R? If that's the case, I'd still hugely favour the 40 Years. Though the new MY19 GTI comes close, the 40 Years remains the ultimate stock GTI. I'm sure you're aware but to restate for others, the 40 Years made 195kW/350Nm (213kW/380Nm on overboost) while the GTI makes 180kW/370Nm. At the time, the R was making 206kW and now makes 213kW. The 40 Years had the excellent six-speed wet clutch which I still favour over the new seven-speed. But power and torque don't tell the whole story - it's a matter of character. The GTI with a locking front diff is a terrific handler, while I personally find the AWD R a little sterile until you push it very, very hard. GTI is just more fun. Plus, the 40 Years had an awesome exhaust. If you can find one that has been looked after and not flogged too hard, I'd buy it. I regret not buying this press car.

Lol lol man why does this sound so fimiliar lol happened to me as well lol...
I own this car! But its funny how they change the model name.. In Australia its called "40 Years" & here in Europe & ithink rest of the world its called "Clubsport".
Yes! It's because there is already an Australian-made car called the HSV Clubsport, so Volkswagen needed an alternative name here.
I wish they called it 'Edition 40' instead, '40 Years' looks a bit silly stamped on the side.
Chasing Cars Ohh really? I also heard they borrowed the name from a Porsche Clubsport. Maby becoz VW owns Porsche?
Would have one of these over an mk8 any day.
Still my favorite Golf this one, that cool bodykit and with those cloth seats, the classic analogue dials and even a manual perfect hands down betters the 7.5 GTI and R imo.
The Clubsport/40 Years was a real high point for the Mk 7!
Torn between Golf R 7, GTI performance1 7.5, 40 Years or Ford RS
Out of that lot I would pick a 40 Years
Ray McCarthy maybe a little late but get the R. Lot more power+4 wheel drive and basicly the same price as the clubsport.
U shud do a video on what makes the clubsport different to the clubsport s.

Manual are better mate.
Belle voiture la golf GTI club mon fils en a acheté une magnifique merci vw

People's car,I love it
Yes, I should.
Love the VW but have had servicing trouble with them in the past, they didn't car about customer service
+Steven Lower Good point - VW Aus have briefed us a number of times over the last year about their plans to improve after sales service. As an owner myself, I hoping they are successful!
Steven Lower Here in Sweden were i happen to live were said to have VW's best service in the country. So i guess its diffrent.
Could you please do a review on MK7 R and MK6 R [ manual ] thanks heaps
I'll put that video on my wish list - if somebody volunteers their Mk 6 Golf R I'd be happy to do a comparison!
Man I wish they brought in the clubsport S and 3 door versions.. I mean, I'm happy they did what they did but I feel like they held back..
+OfficialMINIm Same. How cool is the three door! At least we got this beast though. I loved it.

beezy Same here, thats why i bought one! Come test drive! ;)
*drools*
40 years or brz? torn between these two on my next car
40 Years is the more complete car, in my opinion. But the BRZ is a lot of fun too!
@@chasingcars nice! I know that gti is fwd but is gti fun as well or "boring" like they say on golf r
Good job mate!
+rowan barber thanks, Rowan!
Nice Review!
Thanks, Manuel! Glad you enjoyed it.
awesome review! enjoy ^_^
Thank you! The 40 Years really was a great car. Probably the best stock Golf ever.
Awesome review, keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot Edward! Hope it was good enough to subscribe.
Brilliant work man!
Thanks a lot!
who uses kW for power ... please use HP the next time
+xXLilLuDaXx this is Australia, where we fully use the metric system - I'm sure Google can convert for you. Thanks!
261 hp / 195 kW
Thanks mate
But you refer to yourself as "six foot nothing".
Nice T Shirt!?
Good review, great car but dress for a video shoot.
