    Nice video Lee.... A suggestion... Why not remove and re-tie the end ropes? I did that to mine and it moved the pivot point about 10 inches up the suspension.... THAT would move the possible turn over point farther up the line. It made all the difference in the world to mine. That ridgeline mod I did makes this hammock a very nice hammock as it gave me more sag, lowering the center of gravity, and opened up the sides a lot allowing that angled lay. I also attach the netting pull outs at the end of this ridgeline where it meets the "outer" ends of the end ropes and alleviated the possibility of overstressing the netting. The net will sit an inch or so lower but this hammock has tons of headroom. As to the angled lie... Toss that pad and use an underquilt/blanket. I stopped using a pad a long time ago and just sleep in the hammock with nothing under me inside.. I get a very flat lay and a comfortable night.... I have to say that I love mine and actually have a nice Hennessy and prefer this to the Hennessy after my mods.Great video and thanks for the plug...

      I was glad too. I love those mods!!! I kept thing about your suggestion about going with an underquilt/blanket the whole time I was tossing and turning!!! I was shocked at how flat of a lay I got. As I kind of mentioned, at one point I woke up for a second because I was laying so flat that I thought I was on the ground. I actually opened the net and felt around outside to make sure that I was not on the ground LOL
      I will most likely do that retie. On this video I wanted to stay as close as possible to the the setup right out of the package. I wanted to be able to give it a fair chance to redeem itself and also wanted to see if the changes I made in setup helped stop the original fail points. Now that I see that part of the fail was mine and that this is a great hammock, I am going to start looking at adding some of your mods. I am going to send you a PM later today. Right now I am taking a break from some home repairs that has turned into a 2 hr break...I better get back out there!! Thanks Again for telling me of this hammock. Have A great weekend My Friend!!

      Out of the box this thing really leaves a lot to be desired. But a little fine tuning and it really works... Hey, after you extend those end ropes take some paracord and just tie in a ridgeline with a taut-line hitch for adjustment. Run it over the top of the net and try adjusting it a little at a time and see how you like it.. That is what I did on all of my hammock that I modified this way. That way you will know if it is worth the work to install. Some will not like it and this will help to avoid the trouble of the install. But I am sure that you will like it as it will give you control over your sag and center of gravity as well as give you a place to store things. Before you actually install the ridgeline inside let me know as I have an easy, no sew, cheap, ridgeline organizer idea that works great.

      Bob Amos On my hammock trip this summer, I had a 20 degree underquilt that Used as an overquilt and an air pad for under my hammock. The airpad was so cold and uncomfortable, I ended up using the underquilt as intended and stuffing the air pad on top of me to stay warm with a thin fleece blanket. Underquilts are the way to go! I just bought this hammock as my boyfriend is afraid he’ll fall out of the hammock while sleeping, so this is better for him. For my next trip, I have just an ultralight Eno Sub6 and I bought a 3 oz mosquito suit for $20 from Field & Stream. That way, when I get up at night or setup and breakdown camp, I,m still protected from the bugs.

    • @PhoenixGenesis
      @PhoenixGenesis 6 років тому

      Lee Ralph I find that the airflow isn’t that great with the mosquito netting. I won’t use this in the summer, but it would be great for winter camping as it would keep me warmer. You could just make 2 holes in the netting for the ridge line and superglue and duct tape with grommets for reinforcement. I found that the mosquito netting had extra room in mine and I was able to store my glasses in my hard shell case. For $40, this is a decent hammock. The Equip hammock tarp is too small for this hammock, but works great for my smaller ENO ultralight hammocks.

      Thanks Chuck! Funny thing I did not care for them the first time I used a pair of my friends straps. I was used to using whoppie slings, the straps did not seem to have enough "fine" adjustment. This time they seemed t work a lot better...I am not sure if it is just because I have learned new ways to get my angle right..or just plain luck. I thing it was just plain luck LOL

    • @LeeRalph100
      @LeeRalph100  7 років тому

      I understand Buddy. Funny thing this one is really very easy to get in and out of. One thing that helps is making sure it is at proper height, like setting height. I used to have a bad habit of trying to hang my hammocks to high...which made mornings...and early mornings wake up calls the worst!

    • @Plain-Ole-Chuck
      @Plain-Ole-Chuck 7 років тому +1

      Since mine doesn't have a bug net I'm toying withe the idea of tying a rope to the tree at my feet with a double loop on the other end that I can grab and pull myself up without putting excessive pressure on the hammock it's self. Tied one up but haven't tried it yet...lol

      I have hard of lots of guys using Sheers sewn together over the bugnet as a net. Bob Amos (who turned me on to this hammock, and has some great mods for it) at first was using a sheer set up that sounded really light and useful. Now that is a great idea...there are many that could benefit from that sort of info!!! Good Tip. Let me know how it works

    Bought this yesterday and tried it out last night cause it was too good of a deal to pass up. Added a ridgeline and it worked really well, very pleased after one night. In my opinion there is way too much bug net material which adds some bulk and the components definitely feel cheap, but what do you expect for 40 bucks. At least you dont feel claustrophobic in it. Plan to change out the gathered ends strap with an amsteel continuous loop and need to set up an internal ridgeline somehow. Overall was impressed with it, I'm 6ft and slept diagonal on my side with no issues. Underquilt will definitely help you be more comfortable instead of a pad. I'm happy with it... and it's better than spending $100+ for a summer hammock. I would recommend it to anyone as long as you add a ridgeline.. that goes for any of these style hammocks though. Thanks for sharing the video!

      Thank You for the awesome comment!!! I agree this is a great hammock for the price. I would like to see them tweek it a bit more to lighten it up. I like the idea of adding the amsteel. I did this on my Equip 2 person video. It really cut the weight down greatly.
      I did do an internal ridgeline..I hated that it did not have one..It was done for me by Bob Amos. I have videos on the amsteel and also the ridgeline set up with links to Bob's page as well. Bob has a video showing how he did it while working my hammock.
      Please keep me informed of your progress with this hammock if you do the ridge line mods. I am interested in hearing how it comes out!!

      They do take some practice for sure!! This is my first with a bugnet, and on this model I did not give consideration for the tension on the bugnet straps themselves..but I think in the long run it will be a decent hammock for the price. I am going to send it off to a Bob Amos (channel name) for some mods, such as adding a ridgeline. I have learned to just set it up and learn what I like and what makes for a bad nights sleep and remember that info for the next setup, but at the same time, I keep in mind those "details" that others have already figured out that worked well. I have also found...each hammock has its pluses and its negatives. Good Luck if you give it a try..and I hope you get that perfect hang to get a great nights sleep. Thanks for watching!!

    Very good and honest review brother! One thing with the bugnet straps: Maybe you could replace these by shotcord, that might help! But that doesn't fix the other flaws in the design for sure. Cheers, Marc

    • @LeeRalph100
      @LeeRalph100  7 років тому +1

      Thank You Brother!! I had heard of the shotcord, but have never used it. I know very little of it...does it allow for more stretch?
      You are right that it does not fix the other flaws. It is a budget hammock for sure and as they say you get what you pay for, but I think that with a better and proper set up (which I failed at on the first one) some of these can be combated. I am think of popping for a bit less of a budget hammock and testing it to see if there really is a big difference in Budget verses middle to higher end hammocks.

      +Scott Taylor Scott, as far as the Equip Hammocks go, I really did like the roominess of the double hammock. This one seems to lay a lot different then the double, more flat and straight then diagonal. I think if the setup is done properly that this would be a great budget hammock and perfect for that non woods person to help combat the mosquitoes. Have a great week my Friend.

  • @johnlord8337
    @johnlord8337 7 років тому +1

    No wonder I am happy with my John-hammock. Dollar Store $1 6x8 party (cotton) netting, or used dumpster-diving used gill netting. Make my 2 - 50 ft John-paracord line, that is interwoven each 3 inches 0-0-0-0-0-0-0 pattern (tedious prepping work, but saves all time later) for a 50 foot line. This is interwoven through the netting, making a double or triple layer 2x8 foot net hammock. Install a short ridgeline connecting to the head and foot ends of the hammock lines. Acquiring the proper length x width of lightweight mosquito netting, make a 6 x 8 foot mosquito screening. Sew-in small magnets along the netting.
    Hang the net hammock from the double-line paracord to each tree (or a double tripod pole system), and use the 0-0-0 loops in the paracord for threading the tag ends through and toggle. NO MORE KNOTS !!! Quick fast up, quick fast down. The ridgeline is already attached to the hammock lines will naturally pop up with proper tension. Toss the mosquito sheeting OVER the ridgeline and pull around hammock, and magnet close along the head and foot ends of the hammock. No more fg zipper issues. Netting hangs from ridgeline and net hammock edges away from body, and there is enough undersag, so skeeters don't bite you on the a--.
    Further options for the 2-layer net hammock (with the third layer tossed over the ridgeline, creating a superstructure of netting for hanging small gear inside the hammock above your body, small ruck, boots, wet clothing, etc. Like an upside down "e", put a space blanket between the netting layers, and if further wanted, this can become a duff and debris mattress in between the netting. Have another blanket, fold and put that between the two layers and can overlap like the netting layer for a blanket hammock coccoon. If you bring a queen or king size wool blanket then you can make an infolded "C" design (can't draw with this GD character set). Lay out blanket. find halfway point and in-fold both sides of blanket to that point. Fold one side over the other side. You make a "c" within the "C" blanket for a double-layered blanket sleeping bed and hammock system. Tossing that upper "C" over the ridgeline and you have your wool coccoon. No need for any bigger under-quilting system. Other option is to also wrap the space blanket between the 2 layers and over the ridgeline with the other netting and wool blanket for an even greater insulated coccoon sleep system.
    Netting, paracord, ridgeline cord, mosquito sheeting with magnets, space blanket, < 1#. Less overall cost than the $160+ ENO hammock and its weight at 1# 6 oz (?).
    Taking down the hammock, remove and fold up the blanket into blanket roll and horseshoe around ruck, fold up the space blanket and put into little ruck pocket, undo and fold up mosquito netting into small packet, and stored in small ruck pocket. Untoggle, unthread paracord line from one tree, and push netting away, while pulling all paracord out of hammock. Ends up in little netting ball, with longer paracord at the other tree. Untoggle, and untread other tree end. Small netting ball, smaller than softball size, and wrap/wind both paracord ends and the ridgeline around the netting. Stuff into ruck. Same for putting hammock up, unwind and toggle-up one paracord end, and pull netting and paracord to other tree and toggle up. Quick, fast, easy.

    • @LeeRalph100
      @LeeRalph100  7 років тому

      Good Point!! I did not mention the stretch part...I wonder if this also lead to the failure of the first hammock. They stress on their package not to hang over 18 inches high...the one that failed was quite high. I did feel some stretch in it, and in this one as well. I had to re position this hammock after the first hang because I did sag to low when I got into it. I have never tried a ripstop hammock.... I think LOL Sadly I am not up on the different fabrics as I should be. As all my hammocks are the 3 different Equip models, I am assuming they are made of some sort of lesser nylon and not the ripstop styled nylon itself. Do you have any info on that? Thanks!

    I would have liked to see video of your hammock flipping and you laying in the bug net :D But instead of getting my cheap thrill fix, I had to go to other youtube vids of "hammock fail compilation", "fat people getting into a hammock", etc. I need to get out more !!

      HEY Who you calling FAT????? LOL
      I wished I had too!! I was out camping with my buddy OutdoorsmansParadise when it happened..after I quit yelling and cussing...I said that would have been an awesome thing to have caught on video LOL
      I am taking a break from doing some home repairs at the moment...but, now you have me itching to look up those fail videos!!

      Hey Buddy!!! How are you doing Joey? I hope it is starting to warm up a bit for you!!
      I have been worried a bit about that old no shoulders!! It is still a bit warm here. I wanted to go camp at a camp where I had a fire pit next to a stone wall...but I just knew it was crawling with copperheads..so I stayed away from there. In the middle of the night, my butt is not getting out of a tent, hammock, a camper or a mansion..with out shinning my light all over and putting my shoes on first!! LOL

    Lee, you said you slept well but at the end you sound pretty bushed... If you want to use it as a chair, couldn't you untie the net suspension and ait on top of the net?

    • @LeeRalph100
      @LeeRalph100  7 років тому +1

      I think you may be right my friend, I did not realize that until I rewatched it. I did sleep well once I got everything situated and straightened out...but I did loss at lest 2 hrs, maybe more fighting everything. I may have been more tired then I knew...I know I was glad to get home and stretch out though. You have a great point on the chair, simple and easy. THANKS!!!

    improvise. adapt. overcome. you were just testing the net for weight breaking point. yeah yeah that's it. glad it wasn't a catastrophic failure. Semper Fi.

      Yup, That is my story and I am sticking to it LOL
      Brother that second I felt that hammock strap snap..and it was no passive snap and flip!!! It was like I told another..like a tidal wave had hit me...I did not know what happened until I was facing the ground hanging in the net...I am sooooooo glad there was a net on this hammock. It would have been a painful crash as I hit the ground.. LOL
      Take care my Friend and Brother Semper Fi!!

    Never camped out and slept in a hammock! I used to sleep on the ground when I was very young, but later on I had to get a foam mattress or an air mattress. I can see where they would be comfy! Okay Lee, I get it, you're a fast cook! LOL! Nice recovery Lee!

    • @LeeRalph100
      @LeeRalph100  7 років тому

      LOL, Truthfully Todd, I had speed the cooking part up while editing and I was not sure if it would stay or not in the final edit..so I just speed it up to make that part go by faster...I forgot to remove it when I uploaded LOL
      Brother, I do not sleep straight on the ground now days if I do not have too..I pay for it to much the next day! I have to have at least a sleeping mat.
      The hammocks have taken a lot to get just right. I like them, but have lost many a nights sleep. As I like to say "I sure want to get that perfect hammock hang...but I sure am not going to lose sleep over it" LOL I have tried using all the tips given on UA-cam and webpages and had the worst nights sleep ever...but when we just set them up by what feels good, I get a rest full night. They do take some tweaking. I am hoping to start trying to use my tent more when the weather cools and bugs would be a lesser issue,
      ATB My Friend!

    These 9 foot hammocks aint long enough for most men (at least 6 foot) to get a good comfy lay to camp in one overnight. For a camp chair or to day nap in it might be fine.

      I have some friends that feel the same exact way and they are far far more experienced woodsman/bushcrafters than I am. I think for sure it is a personal preference thing. ATB!!

    I got a perfect solution...Sleep with about 20 Frogs and you won't need a Bug Net...lol. That way will have fatter Frogs for Breakfast in the morning...Ah Hahahaha. I'm still working on my bug net setup...and this October I plan on using it...but first I gotta test it out in the skeeter infested Yard Of Bone's Yard...lol.

    • @LeeRalph100
      @LeeRalph100  7 років тому

      LOL great solution Brother...and they can sing me to sleep as well! Frog Legs for Breakfast...all skeeter fattened up, you may be on to something here
      Cool, I can not wait to see it, I think you will like the big difference they make. Just a side note...I think Bone may breeding them things as some sort of secret War Weapon!!!!
