I'm a male, high-tenor vocalist who's been coached by the very best here in NY and I can honestly say that Johnny's voice is absolute sonic perfection!
Saw him sing a couple of nights ago in Cerritos (9-22-17) sounds the same, what a voice. Sang a ton of songs. Incredible voice and just a class act all of the way!
I cant imagine a world without Johnny Mathis. Like living in America without the Flag, Baseball, Coca Cola and Apple Pie....Johnny is one of those people who should live forever. He's always been family to everybody. Viva, Johnny Mathis !!
How on earth can the Grammy Awards not honor the greatest singer in the world? They give awards to punks who produce garbage, yet this majestic master goes unrewarded after a career of hits that span half a century?? Shame on the Grammy voters. They don't deserve any recognition or credibility. Johnny is the best. He always has been and he always will be !!!
jennifer86010 / I totally agree with you, 100% .Mr.Mathis won The Grammy, Hall of Fame Award/ 2008 for," It's Not for me to say" The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award-2003 , The Grammy Hall of Fame Award 2002 for" Misty", The Grammy Hall of Fame Award 1998 for " Chances Are".If I hadn't googled, would have never known, he had received these particular grammys. As of late ,The Grammy' s (The Award Show) have gone down, in other words, classless, cheesy, undignified.Do they still have the Jazz category?
Yes there are categories for Jazz as well as Smooth Jazz, Classical music and many other genres of music, but the public is rarely aware of these categories or the people who win in them.
jennifer86010 / More than likely, because, they don't televise that particular part of the show.Someone usually rattles off...." And earlier this evening, so and so won for best performance, in the..........category"
+John Kennedy I really enjoyed watching this interview too - the interviewee covered it well. God bless Johnny Matthis - and I need to get that Nile Rogers produced album project too 😍
He looks better now than he did in this video. John Mathis should have a Grammy, but who cares because it is political. The choice is not based on pure talent.
My first encounter with Johnny Mathis's music was in 196 or 1962 when I was in the Air Force at Castle Air Force base. Someone in the barracks had a record player playing Johnny's first album. I was stuck by the beauty of his voice and his songs. I was so in awe of him that I couldn't move until the LP played all his songs. He has been my favorite singer ever since and the only singer I can listen to nonstop without end. Thank you Johnny for all the great music you have given us over the decades.
Johnny Mathis never won a grammy?? What the hell? Little Richard, Diana Ross never won Grammys, they belatedly gave a life grammy to Ms. Ross after years of the lobby. The Grammy is full of shit and should be ashamed of themselves.
For sure he has been recording for much more than 50 years: His first Columbia album dates from 1956 (that makes 59 years!), and his classic recordings of "It´s not for me to say", and "Wonderful, wonderful", are from that same year!
It's funny how the Grammys work. And yet there are others, who never won. Even though, there are artists who are steady put out music, they never won. I think, Marvin Gaye won one, after all his wonderful music. I think he won for sexual healing. Oh well, the public buy what they like. Smile Everyone.

One of the best singers in the world. God bless his heart and soul.

Excellent interview. Obviously coming from a perspective of knowledge, respect and affection. Mathis seems like a terrific guy too.
