I loved that part as well Callum. Just goes to show we hide so much of who we are from people. And like Charlie says--that's the stuff that actually matters.
I am interested to know your thoughts on silence of the lambs a film I did not get around to seeing till recently. I think it is incredible. peak horror
hi Tom! Guilt is the worst feeling...michelle from Substack Peace yes feels disgusting only one answer for me prayer peace will watch and write some essays especially this one and religious abuse
Wow! Such great commentary, pulling out the deeper meanings. Thank you for a very thoughtful review. As i watched the movie, I found it kind of irritating that Charlie kept calling people, especially Ellie who was an angry brat, amazing. Were they really amazing? I also found it heart breaking, that when pressed, the missionary, who came to bring the love of God, confessed he found Charlie disgusting. The truth is we all have a disgusting side but God loves us anyway. Then I thought how Jesus might see us. He created us out of love and called us good. I believe he thinks we are amazing. So maybe Charlie wasn't religious but he was the one who was closest to the heart of God in regards to what he believed about people.
Nice review. Left out the condescending & negative wife though. She highlighted Brendons optimism & empathy for how others feel & what they are capable of. Beautiful movie. Did cry - too close to home. Will sub... thanks for the video
if you look at the etymology of character name u will find this movie is actually very "religious" spiritual...and at last charles rise up just like jesus toward elie the light.
The problem isn't traditional religion, which is very much subordinate in Charlie's culture; it's the suicidal and nihilistic "liberal" culture which destroys him. Had he lived among the Amish the story would have been impossible. The film is essentially identical to Aronofsky's "The Wrestler", just more degenerate and made for a later period of frog boiling. Both have the same ending: the suicidal protagonist consumed by white light. Aside from making money, the goal of this film is to degrade the audience.
I’ve been wanting to see this movie because I love Brendan Frazier in everything he does. This analysis makes me want to see it even more.
Thank you Jaden for stopping by. He nails it in this role and he deserved the Oscar 100% :)
3:00 these responses from the students were what moved me the most in the film. Flawed but yet an incredible and important film.
