A crappy fighting games from years of old. What's even worse than a bad fighting game with horrible fight mechanics? A completely convoluted story, and of course...the dreaded action delay...My foul enemy...How many games you've sent into the abyss....
More appropriate names for this title: Kunt Fu, Kung Fail, Shaq Fail, Shaq WTFu?
One of the worst fighting games of all time.
I think the plot where you go into the back of the dojo and actually get pinned down and have your shoes stolen would make for a better plot than the one in this game
Then it's a beat-em-up with Shaq trying to get his shoes back

Thanks for doing this review. When it first came out it got great reviews because EA spent money on ads but later most people gave it 2 out of 10 stars.
I worked at this company when the game was being made I came from Virgin Interactive, I was put on the team to help improve the game and get the team back on schedule. The first thing I said was it was boring and repetitive and the controls sucked.
The only thing they cared about was Shaq's name and that the animation was at 30 fps instead of 24 or 16 like most games. No matter what I said or did they only cared about the 30 fps animation. They were convinced it was going to sell a million copies. I did a ton of work to improve the controls, make the fighting more balanced and even wanted to add better music and real life and voice effects, which we did for Rocky and Aladdin at Virgin, but they threw it all out.
After 6 months they fired me.
They brought me into a board room and told me I just don't get it. "It has 30fps" it is the best game out there.
I was told by the top people on the team that if it does not sell 1 Million copies world wide they will personally apologize and I will get my job back. Toys R Us only sold 40,000 copies and the company went bankrupt. Still waiting for the apology.

The story doesnt explain why the dojo owner fights Shaq later. (He is Leotsu if you didnt know) Overall I liked this game.

My God the music... just constant beeping drowning the actual tunes, pretty DOS like but definitely worse than the worst of DOS games I've played. Makes it truly horrible.

You never blocked, you jumped into every fireball and attacked at the worst times, and failing to follow up on the times when you did land hits.
I watched stanburdman when I was a depressed adolescent and he says "timing and strategy" as though he really wants us to believe he's a fighting game expert despite footage like this.
Well as a kid I played this game because the music is catchy.

The only REAL reason you think it is bad is because people tell you it is, AVGN etc... The truth is that Shaq Fu isn't all that bad and actually pretty decent. A big battle field, nice selection of characters, fluid animations. cool moves. If you want a TRUE bad (fighting) game take like Rise of the Robots or Primal Rage or some shit like that. Try forming your own real opinions when gaming okay?

It's playing baseball with a seamstress, or picking flowers with the god of war.
One thing that really bothers me about this game, where the hell did Shaq learn how to fight? He's a basketball player, even with formal martial arts training I doubt he'd stand a chance against mystical monsters with energy beams and swords and what not.

Great review! I'm glad you were aware that spamming 1 move is the key to beating the enemies. I played it on the native Sega Genesis only. I liked the stage-select and levels and variety of enemies and their creative special moves, the animation and the music. I guess I liked everything about it, except the controls and strategy required to beat enemies, which is "gameplay". It's a shame they screwed up the most important part of the game.

I absolutely love the game! I've beaten the game at least twice and have had fun just bot fighting and fighting with my friends... who also love the game. You have to use abilities. Spamming one move will get your ass handed to you. Just talking about it makes me want to play right now!

Most of the serious complaints im hearing about this game..."Goes from easy to impossible, back to easy."..... "You have to spam moves to win taking all strategy out of the game." These are the same complaints I make about Mortal Kombat (..1,2,3 and Trilogy) Don't see how Mortal Kombat is a masterpiece and Shaq Fu is LOATHED. Mortal Kombat was revolutionary in blood and gore in games yes... But in gameplay honestly its only slightly better than Shaq Fu...
The faces next to the health bars are so attractive. And they blink!
Man I loved this game when I was younger! I knew everyone's special moves (even Shaq's running flying kick) and was actually able to do them. That old man kicking your ass in the vid and the kid Nezu were definitely the hardest characters to beat other than the final boss Sett. The controls definitely were delayed and those one liners were hilariously bad, but the music (not the beeping you hear in this vid) and graphics were awesome at the time. I can't wait to play the remake. Btw projectiles can be blocked with the shield (down+a)

I mostly played 2D fighters back in the mid-90s. For my Genesis, I had this Shaq-Fu, Street Fighter II, Eternal Champions, various Mortal Kombats, etc. Compared to most other 2D fighters at the time, Shaq-Fu had bad controls, cheap AI, and uninspired move sets. Everything this guy complains about in the game is valid no matter when he posted the review.

What you don't seem to know is that shaq was big into fighting/kung fu/karate and this is why it makes sense. He had a cd called shaq fu: da return, which came out prior to this. He was big into wwe/wcw. He considered himself a hip hop artist and there's a lot of crossover between hip hop artists and martial arts...wu tang clan, ever heard it?
You make complaints about that but not about shaq going to Japan and going to a Kung Fu studio...kung fu is Chinese! Something tells me that kung fu studios aren't extremely popular in JAPAN!

I actually enjoyed playing this game when i was little. especially on multiplayer. I usually played as the women who can turn into a big cat. I would win almost all the time. using strategy or no strategy. playing the campaign sucked because i did not enjoy playing as a basketball player. I say if your going to play this game, do it on multiplayer. Its a lot more fun than the campaign...

Dude! You just suck with Beast. Beast is OP. He's used to be one of my favorite and most played characters. Special Moves? You weren't using any....those were all normal attacks. Where's his Roar? Fireball? His Teleport Strike? Come on, dude! This game truly wasn't THAT BAD...it was just played by a bunch of bad players and they was comparing the game to the higher successful games. There were plenty of far worse games out there...like Pit Fighter. This game was unique and had potential to be better....music wasn't bad either.
I remember when they showed the commercial for Shaq-Fu, I was like...I'm so getting that game as a kid. Then one christmas, my parents bought a brand New Sega Genesis and Shaq-Fu was one of the games they bought. I played that game like as if I was trying to practice for a life-changing test, dude lol. But yeah, I loved all the characters except Auroch and Diesel. Kaori, Set-Ra, Beast, Rajah, Colonel, Leotsu, Nezu, Voodoo, Shaq himself, and Memphis were all characters I've played and enjoyed very much....and mastered them all. With Set-Ra, there was a way to do his flying attack in there air and it would continue until the opponent died. They couldn't get out of it lol.
Let me also add...that the top 3 OP characters in that game (IMO), were Leotsu, Colonel, and Voodoo. Why? Let me explain, Leotsu was powerful. All his special attacks took a lot of your life...even his roundhouse kick hit hard. Colonel, just spam the machine gun attack and the homing missle...and if they got close, spam the bionic punches until they jumped back...then rinse and repeat. Voodoo...just spam the earthquake slam and the voodoo doll stab. Others have some broken moves, like Beast with his Roar + Teleport Strike spam. You could even hold the fireball and if the opponent ran into you, it counted as a hit. lol. As you can see, I seriously played the shit out of this game. lol.

i remember playing this game way back in the days, and honestly i only have good memories about Shaq Fu. It was a game with a Basketball star and it was good for what it was. I also really liked the Soundtrack and it was not broken or unfinished, like other games nowadays.

As funny as this video cud be, spaming is still to this day apart of gaming. Look at scorpion or noob on MK11. So cant be too mad. It was like that on Street fighter too. Cheat moves, frames and strategies has always been exposed in games for years, nothing new. Plus i never thought the game was that bad. Or i guess i just never got mad at that stuff.

I always wait for people to complain about the music in reviews of this game. That's how you can always spot people that never played the cartridge. The horrible beeping noise you hear in the music is actually an emulator glitch. If you play the game on a Sega Genesis or use an emulator that fixes the glitch (like Fusion), the music in the game is actually pretty good for the 16-bit era.
yeah, i can confirm. i have the actual cart and it sounds fine. definitely people give it less credit cuz of errors due to emulation. not saying emulation never works, but i'm saying it'd be way better if they looked from the POV of someone with the cart.

I won't criticize the review. Frankly, the game mechanics sucked and were poorly executed. The gameplay itself is GOD AWFUL.
However, the Sega Genesis version's music is actually pretty memorable, and I always did like the graphics and stage design, as well as the character design.
It got some things right.
Unfortunately, it made the Fatal error of completely fucking up the combat and AI. Throwing Shaq in there is what really utterly doomed it though. It's everyone's key criticism nowadays.
This game had potential, but fell short in the end.
Such a shame, since the game is so pretty and has so fluent animations. The gameplay looked horrible, I'd never want to try it even.
One thing you didn't mention: What the eff is wrong with the music? All I could hear is "dut dut dut, dut dut" through the whole video.

i guess he did use a really weird one. when you play it straight from the cart, you notice the beat isn't as high in volume as it was in stan's vid. you're right, genesis games do have good emulation, but i guess shaq fu has (or had) problems, especially with the audio and mostly the music, also a bit more control delay.
