The best part about Canibus is how open he is in this interview. No ego involved. Just self realization. He is open to feedback from people that didn’t even sell a record. Good stuff.
You said that well.I was thinking the same thing.
Seems like he has no ill will.probably because it seems he was able to transform his life after rap.Good for him if that’s the case.it’s gotta be hard.

GROWTH
This is the first Canibus interview I've ever seen where he wasn't super awkward of kind of standoffish. It was nice to see him comfortable.
The bootleg Kev interview was a tough watch.
“Everybody say What Canibus could’ve been, but wasn’t none of ‘em tried to help except Clef.” 🙌🏽
Probably cause they thought he was on his way. Nobody envisioned his trajectory leading elsewhere than Mount Rushmore of rap.
@@andrewthomas364 nop they were scared and jealous
@@andrewthomas364 You're right. Wyclef was the biggest artist in hip hop back then, so everyone probably just assumed Canibus would be good under his wing.
I knew someone highlighted that so I had to scroll before I did . 👍🏾
@@thisisanewusername4662 this is the most truthful fact comment I've ever seen on social media regarding Canibus
Nobody really embraced Canibus after the fallout.
Nobody! The culture failed him because he was such a lyrical threat.
He didn’t really try to make any friends
Agree. Didn't help that he challenged "the machine" early on with LL though. I remember the streets feeling like Canibus really won that. At the end of the day, "the machine" decides who will be famous.
His first album just wasn’t good, unfortunately he didn’t get a second chance. By his second album he had already been written off. Canibus should’ve had Wyclef do 2nd Round K.O. and other producers like Premier or RZA do the rest. Maybe at a certain point, it wasn’t up to him if he was gonna get a major label budget and support.
@@nineixb616If you’re going to go at powerful figures aggressively you’d better have Dr. Dre and Jimmy or people of similar stature backing you. Wyclef didn’t have it.
@@watchyamouth5053 how do you know? The politics can go deeper than what's presented 💯❗️
"Everybody said what Canibus could've been but wasn't none of them trying to help except Clef...". That statement shuts the entire counterargument down!
That was it right there
precisely
Precisely
RIGHT!!!! All this coulda BS!! Y’all wasn’t around 🤔
I always wondered why NYC producers like Preemo, Pete Rock, Large Pro, Rza, Dame Grease, etc never reached out to Canibus. He was signed to Universal Music so he had the budget to pay them. Those producers are the main ones who have gone on record to critique Canibus' output.
This brother changed my life. Made me approach every craft aiming for precision & excellence. Beautiful to hear his perspective now and see him get his flowers. Salute to the one and only 🙏🏾
🎯🎯🎯🎯
This clip reflects absolute maturity and an individual who can see the bigger picture.
One of the Best interviews. Brother has a lot to say. Very wise and well spoken. Let him get his shit off. Can’t wait for the full interview.
Hands down, one of my best Math interviews so far
Indeed one of the BEST interviews! Shout out to Can I Bus!!
I’m feeling like a feen waiting for the full interview 😂

Yo let's get Redman on the show that would be a bangin episode
I'm with that
I would love to see it.
That's gonna be dope
Facts💯🎤
MUST
It's amazing to see how humble Canibus has become, and it's super dope to see him big up Clef for believing him, giving him a shot, and taking him to the next level
How, is Cannibus humble? He sittin up there acting like he actually had a chance at Halle Berry. Like he was going to get her. Cannibus is out his mind. Cannibus was so wack af, I doubt he even had groupies. But yet he wanted Halle Berry. You call that humble? Lmao
@@yo3rdtier128are u remedial? Do have comprehension issues? The man said he was young and everything was happening so fast. He’s meeting people he never imagined he would have. And at a moment when he was young he didn’t fully know who Eric Benet was but he knew who Halle was. And was star struck like anyone would be given how fine she was. How are you faulting him for trying to holla and/or show interest in a woman most men fantasized let alone never met? Lol
Most of us have made bad decisions, thought/saw things differently, wasn’t mature at different points in our lives. He took you back to a period in his life and explained where he was at and how he looked at things. Over 2 decades ago.
And here you are in 2023 asking how is he humble for telling a story when he was young. Next time pay attention
@skillz78 I was gonna respond to him, but you summed it up so good, there's nothing extra to add
@@yo3rdtier128 Halle just a another bych from Cleveland so why should HE put her on a pedestal...
@PowerToTheTubers exactly !! thank you @skillz78
Been a big fan of this man since 1996. Hearing speak on these issues, the maturity has made me a bigger fan of his than ever.
Canibus reminds me of Cormega A LOT. Both are super talented, MONSTERS on the mic, got into beefs with hip-hop legends and held their own, and never saw the mainstream success they deserved. It feels like both of their careers were mismanaged, which sucks because I think of all of the dope music we real hip-hop fans lost out on.
Big ups for that respect for Mega Montana!
ok
Yooo, forreal. Mega was a MONSTER. I really do think and feel that I got to witness the best era of rap but still I know I deprived of much because people like Mega and Canibus were not allowed to florish
Real hip hop fans haven’t missed anything from him we regularly listen and support canibus
@@Essencemusica47 I'm talking about reaching his max potential. He never was able to get the support or a decent budget that would allow him to make a true classic album. Just imagine if Canibus got to work with the Alchemist, Just Blaze, RZA, Havoc, Em, etc., where he could just collaborate and make something crazy.
I'm so happy he gets to tell his side of the story.
Me too. Long overdue 🤣🤣🤣
Mecca is telling Bis exactly what I wish I had a chance to tell him back in the day. Respect.
Cannibus is a good dude. I'm so happy I took the time on this interview. Before I die I'd love to hear Cannibus go bar for bar with Nas, Em, Royce, Kendrick, Cole and other lyricists from the past 20 years. He deserves that
Without a notebook tho.

After hearing CANIBUS explanation, I totally understand why he worked with Wyclef for his 1st Album.
The industry was trying to kill his energy. I already knew this. What I didn't know was the extent
Of course he'd want to work with Wyclef back then. He had 2 of the biggest albums in the world in the late 90's. On paper it made perfect sense. It just didn't end up being a good fit for him.
@@spek-27 actually it did because that album is double platinum now and he's still getting royalties💯
@@skeetskeetnews4924 The album went gold and it got a lot of negative reviews. Back then that was considered below average in comparison to the other albums coming out during that time and compared to all the hype and anticipation that was built up.
Son is right. First time i heard Canibus was like late 96-97, i was in college. I used to write rhymes back then. I heard son and was like "I WANT TO RAP LIKE THAT" and knew i couldn't rap like that so making beats it was lol.
You should have kept writing.
Mark of a true monster….when you have people questioning if they should quit! I felt that way when I read the linear notes on It Was Written. I kept writing though
Nas made me quit writing for awhile... just like when Eminem first heard Treach, he had writer's block for a whole year.
You weren’t the only one none of us could 😅
I felt the same back then too bro.
His last words hit me!!!!!shout out to clef u did good by canibus
He certainly did. The man deserves mad love & respect.
Facts
The Canibus experience is one of my best so far. Blessings to the whole crew.
Canibus and Derrick Rose are the 2 best interviews Math had done. Learned alot from those 2 right there
Facts 💯
Canibus appreciates what it was . Math n Mecca speaking to the expectations of his fans. Canibus was larger to the culture than he knew.
good point
I remember when I first heard Canibus I was like WOW this is the craziest shit I ever heard and then Big Pun at that time I put both of them as almost super human level of how dope their shit was
This might Just be the rehabilitation Canibus needs.
Yo this is putting biz out to a new crowd of listeners. Salute🙏🙏
Glued to my phone, the editing is on point. Every clip end with an amazing point being brought across. Thank Math for allowing Canibus to tell his story. Salute.

I don't even want to watch this clip, I kind of want to hang on and hold out until the entire episode drops, these clips are way too good and I feel like I'm being spoiled, I really want to hear this story but I want to hear it in the context of the conversation so I might have to skip this one but definitely leave a like in the meanwhile. Thank you Math once again and thank you, Germaine Williams for finally letting us in.
I ended up watching but I feel exactly the same. It needs to be watched in it’s entirety and within the context and flow of the interview. Looking forward to it.
You out did yourself with this one Math. We needed this. God bless!
" ...I hop into the backseat of a cab and rhyme; til the meter says 9 9 9 9..." ~CANIBUS~ 😤
I would of liked to hear him speak about how “Desperados” came about and stories from that studio session
1) This is Canibus's best interview.
2) I'm glad he is setting the record straight about Wyclef.
“It will cost you a brain cell just to cipher with me!” He was the bar king in that era.
“I’ll rip ya fuckin skin off just to get on ya nerves”
Yes Canibus bars were raw!! All those mixtape freestyles had us in awe back then!!!

Give him props for showing respect to Wyclef. Most people focus so much on what you didn't do for them, they forget all the shit you did do to help them.
Second time posting on a Can I bus segment….man I never understood how much hip hop needed this brother at that time but we all got a taste of greatness and he’s living proof of MAN coming full circle. Peace to Math and crew..probably the best interview to date
pure humility from Canibus. Thank you Math for giving this Legend (with a capital L) a platform to speak.
What Canibus did on his second album is what everyone wanted and expected him to do on his first album. But now I see why he worked with Wyclef and followed his vision.
2nd album was lit 🔥
No, Cannibus had no good albums. Cannibus was wack af. He was a goofy. He lost all his rap battles. Was Cannibus put on the all time worst rappers? He’s 1 of them
@@yo3rdtier128 lmao.... #TROLL
Real talk. I've always felt Wyclef wasn't the guy to put together a Canibus album but hearing this I can see why Canibus did go with Clef. In reality it shouldn't have been up to Canibus to make those decisions. His A&R team should have been the ones making sure the first album was the project the streets wanted and expected.
The second album was okay it was a bit rappity rap
Canibus was my favorite rapper for a good while. Math is getting some of the best interviews outta of some GOATS. I think his humbleness is attracting good energy from some great artists. Props to Math.
Fav guest so far for me. Canibus need a show of his own man. Respect 💯
Hot damn... I bought Can-I-Bus in 98 as a high schooler and thought, this album is way ahead of its time, we don't appreciate what he really made here. That album coming out today would be loved. So unfortunate that he didn't get enough appreciation back then. Still in my top 10.
*Clef deserves mad credit for the gift that is Canibus plus he's a legendary artist himself!*
I thought the beats on the debut album was fresh and original. I still love that record. Compared to anything else around that time, it was unique. Wish those guys hadn’t gone at it.
@@randydaytona5615 all he needed to balance out direction of the project is production from DJ Premier, Eric Sermon, Large Pro etc. (Producers of that Caliber) it would've been a different experience/conversation amongst hip hop heads regarding Canibus's Place in The Rushmore 💯💯💯❗️❗️❗️

It's interesting how things look from the outside. I mean, we all felt what Math was speaking of, but for Bus it was totally different than how we thought it was.
Can-i-bus album is truly underrated. "2nd round, how come, i honour u, rip rock, buckingham palace'. Different but still gold. Underappreciated.
Canibus is killing this interview. Hoff and Mecca taking the interview where it needs to go
Dope how he puts respect on Wyclef when everyone knows it wasn't a good fit. Shouts to Canibus.
He explained the process that Clef attempted to take him to. He wasn’t following the process due to lack of maturity and anxiousness to make it.
The last time I checked, 99% of the rappers and so called artists from that era are nowhere to be found, but Wyclef is all over the world doing things they wouldn’t even be able to do from a musical, political, and humanitarian perspective.
I wonder who is having the last laugh.

I love this interview and I really fat large respect and love for this podcast show for real, in Lagos Nigeria1998 every body my age into rap we’re all routing and waiting for the canines album to drop and when it dropped we listened and read all the reviews in the source magazine , Xxl and vibe magazines was all we did in my hood then at 17years old , it hurt is how the sales went with that debut album and how the media blamed Wyclef for it not going 500k first week and a platinum a week or two weeks after , wyclef did a great job but the universe didn’t just align for the album to be multi platinum sales from the gate another album that did what canibus would have been from the gate was 50cent , I guess Gods timing and grace also works with music , I still listen to honor , what’s going on till this date it takes me back to good ole days of teenagers reading the source magazines at the basket ball court in my hood in Lagos and arguing about rap music albums and writhing rhymes as well , bless you canibus and math Hoffa , Mecca, champ , Bigga and gat murdah all y’all make me nostalgic and happy here in Lagos Nigeria 🇳🇬 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬

Madd nice
This gonna sound crazy but a lot of the time (not all) people who came up playing instruments don't have that ear to make hard ass hip hop beats. They're usually too clean and perfect because that's what they learned. let it be known I'm not saying there are no producers like that but in general I believe this to be case and in this case I apply that to Clef. Canibus 1st album should of been like what they did with Nas Illmatic with Clef and some others A&Ring the overall album with Clef handling some production for the more mainstream tracks and to help with Canibus visibility in the market.
Because he's talking about this, I honestly thought he was going to link with Desert Storm/DJ Clue. Canibus had the best sound over there. Bis ripped every single DS/DJ Clue track he was on at that time. Salute Bis. ✊🏽💯👑

Great great interview Math!!!!
That story about Nas is real talk. Canibus in that freestyle session with DMX & Noreaga was crazy. Have no doubt Nas heard that and thought "I need to write some better shit". I still think Canibus freestyles and guest appearance verses was a major reason why so many rappers didn't collab with him. From 97-00 he was bodying anyone on a track and I just don't think the emcees at the top of the industry wanted to be outshined.
Fear of being upstaged or outshone is a real thing amongst the elite of Emcees, the unspoken rules if you will!
@@MastaInferno it's the real reason LL acted like a bitch. He heard the original 4-3-2-1 verse and couldn't have some new young rapped being the talk of the track.
