  • DATES OF RECORDINGS
Dio Mi Potevi & Niun Mi Tema - 15 April 1942 Liederkranz Hall New York - Erich Leinsdorf
Ora Per Sempre & Si Pel Ciel - 13 August 1943 Buenos Aires Juan Martini Orchestra of the Teatro Colon
In all the anthologies of the great Melchior, these 4 tracks always seem to be forgotten. Melchior sang Otello 31 times. While this is nothing like as many times as his Tristan or Siegfried, it is a significant amount. Among the many venues he sang this role in Italian were Covent Garden and San Francisco.
These excerpts were recorded in Buenos Aires in 1943 and the USA in 1942.
Issued on 78's and, I believe an early Columbia LP during the 1950s, they have since disappeared.
these are superbly sung and would that we had someone today who could sing like this.

What a shame that the MET felt that they had to use Melchior only for Wagner. True, they had no one of the same caliber for these roles at the time but Melchior‘s instrument was in better condition than Martinelli‘s who was only 5 years older. Martinelli was a memorable OTELLO, artistically speaking, but when he finally got around to singing it, his instrument could not match Melchior‘s not to mention Zanelli (who unfortunately died in 1935) or Merli even.
