A cross peen hammer would sure help when stretching out that tang. Nice work!

But then I have to hammer out the lines from the cross peen. No bigger than the tang is I just draw it with the flat hammer

I think "old metal has already been stressed " is just an excuse for forging at the wrong temps. It's the only time I've ever had a problem, even when using broken spring remnants.

I agree. If you take the time to properly anneal the spring before you ever hammer in it it usually does just fine. I found that out early on
