  • #Tholpavakoothu is believed to be more than 350 years old. Performed in the Bhadrakali temples, from January to June every year, the shadow puppeteers of #Kerala are busy performing the story of the #Ramayana as part of the rituals during temple festivals.

Ramayana is actually a mythical account of king Rama. I say mythical as it is not factual. Read about it more.

This happens in our temple in pUthUR, Palakkad, kerala. It is literally old, atleast 300 years and songs are also very old and normal people won’t be able to understand the language. They even don’t use the Mike or stereo systems.

I've got the good fortune to watch them play. A feast ❤️.
The appreciable thing is that they took time off to explain the art and the puppets. Some are 100s of years old... 😮

If you can get the google map in the comment, let me know. Otherwise I will share it through email. There is no website for temple. But there are a lot of pictures of the temple and other details in google map. Temple festival starts by 3rd week of march ( Friday ) and continues for next 3 week and end in first for 2nd week of April ( Friday). “ Pavakootu “ starts at the start of the festival and continue for 2-3 weeks and important days is the 10th day from the start. That is know as “ Garuda pattu “ which will be a small celebration at the night with 1-3 elephant’s to show the part of Ramayana we’re Garuda comes. Let me know if you need any help if you are visiting. Thank you

"Puppets made from the skin of goats and cow" I guess they were not bothered about sacrificing animals then. Still wonder how they justify using leather and such materials inside temple premises when the authorities dont allow people to wear leather belts!.
