Awesome video! THANKS! I just picked up my banjo that I've had for 10 years and never learned how to play it. It just hangs on the wall...This got me going perfectly in 5 minutes!
Good timing! + Thank you so much 😭 I recorded myself playing (to see where I've been putting my hands) and noticed I don't do the whole "resting your thumb" thing correctly so now I'm struggling to fix that lol
Nice job. Glad to see you’re making more vids. What finger do you “pluck/pick” with? Doesn’t look like index. Look forward to more instructional…the good ole Bum Diddy
Excellent lesson to get started on. I'm going to have to try clawhammer again. Have played fingerstyle guitar for 50 years and that is actually hindering me - it is too easy to fall back into fingerpicking the banjo when trying to pick up clawhammer and it just does not sound the same.
LoL, I feel like such a dummy. For me though I am still struggling with where and how to contact the string with my nail. 😅 I figure if I keep practicing it will click eventually.
When I land my thumb on the fifth string and pick it straight back up it sounds the fifth string. It’s quiet but noticeable. No matter how lightly I connect with the fifth string it makes a sound. Any ideas?
Been a guitar player since a teen. Ukulele since 2011. 3rd visit to banjo trying to crack the bum didy. This really helped. ❤
Great breakdown of the basics!

SINGLE STROKES DOWN PICKING WITH WHICH FINGER?

I use my middle finger. I started with index, and then switched to middle a couple years in.
I tell folks it should take as long to do the "bum" as it does to do the "ditty". Sometimes it's a breakthru moment.

thank you.
Cool
I was wondering. Do you prefer nylon or metal strings?
I use metal strings
Sometimes Im not sure my thumb is doing the right thing. I find myself smacking my thumb on the rim. Hoping to study this video to correct the issue
I enjoyed this. But you need a mic. I can't really hear you
Yes, this is one of my first videos about 5 years ago. Will re-record another warmup soon.
