Liqorice is a taste you come to appreciate as a child. I believe flavours are definetely learned behaviour as a child. Lots of Dutch people like liquorice and raw herring, most foreigners dont. Not only Dutch people like liquorice and herring. In Sweden they like both liquorice and herring and in Ukrain they like raw herring with mashed potatoes and olive oil. The flavours of drop aka liquorice come from Italy and they think Dutch liquorice is too light of a liquorice flavor, so it can be even worse. To foreigners it probably tastes like rubber with an awfull taste, but most Dutch people love it. My father actually ate too much of it and the doctor told him to quit eating liquorice. If you really want to try something disgusting it is Surstromming from Sweden. It is fermented herring which fermented for months in a tin can that is about to explode from the gasses. The Swedish call it fermented, but it is really rotten fish. I believe once the fire department came to an appartment building in Sweden, because they thought there was a gas leak, but it was someone who opened up a can of Surstromming inside an appartment building. There are lots of Surstromming challenges on UA-cam. It is the smelliest food in the world, that is why so many people want to do the challenge. I believe it is even forbidden to open a can of Surstromming in a public place. When you do Surstromming challenge you wish you had a liquorice challenge. Lol
I enjoyed the herring... licorice not so much! lol. When we're in Sweden... maybe I'll give it a go.. but your description makes it sound... awful. LOL

So happy to you visited my city! Not the whole city was flatted just the inner city and parts of the harbor. 1:32 Is Het Witte Huis (The White House), which dates back to the end of the 19th century and was the first "sky scraper" in Europe. Licorice is disgusting I think it was used back it the day to waterproof wooden ships! The thing is they have to get you to eat it when your very young. If you try it as an adult there's a 90% chance you won't like it, lol. I never liked it even when I was young.
Glad we're not alone in our distaste for licorice!! lol. Had never heard about the ship thing... but can't say we're surprised. lol. In the USA there's kind of a joke about children not liking black licorice!! We do however have red licorice that can be pretty tasty!
@@IfWeGoTo The ship thing was an (apparently bad) joke. Fun fact, they actually used hemp fibers (hemp was completely legal those days), mosses and black tar. The same ingredients as licorice btw (no, bad joke again… obviously I really don’t like licorice). The English have what we call “Engelse drop” (English licorice). Those are small square flat licorice slices between slices of flavored soft candy and they usually come in a mix of different small candies. Those I can eat one or two as the candy masks the licorice flavor. I will look for that red licorice you mentioned. Tip: Do not try “zoethout” if someone offers it, it’s a trick! It’s just the actual dried plant root from which the main licorice ingredient is normally extracted. Also watch out for Salmiak it’s the powered form of the extracted ingredient and ammonium chloride is its chemical name. They can all be bought as candy. I hope this info protects you against Dutch licorice shenanigans. As spoken by a victim… (all in good fun of course XD).
@@jurgenolivieira1878 Black licorice might as well be black tar. lol. Look for redvines. I think that's the most popular version of American red licorice. Very popular among eco tourists and documentary makers because it only takes 30-60 minutes to get there. There are many touragencies, which I would recommend above finding your own way. that's why there are bicycles so that you don't have to walk and are at your destination 2 X as fast
That would have been the smart thing for us to do 😂
Normally you have to eat drop licorice from an early age on to appreciate it. I would like to see you try Dutch Indonesian food... If you no history Indonesia used to be a Dutch Colony for 350 years. It made The Dutch rich and the Canal houses are built in the golden age period because of the trade in spices, gold and diamonds.
Oh yes, we read about that!! Heard the food is good but didn’t get the chance to try it. Will definitely have to next time. Thank you for the recommendation!!!
It's totally different and does not taste like the traditional licorice flavor at all.
That sounds messed up to sell as candy. hahahah. Will be on the lookout next time!
@@IfWeGoTo Hahaha indeed!
Thanks for the tip!
Drop me a message when your back arround this way. I'll tell you about some good placed to visit and/or eat. Chinny's sell dishes from my native country Surinam (I came to Rotterdam when I was 6). They are ok but they spice their dishes down for a broader (tourist) audience. Surinam (until 1975 part of Netherlands) has the largest single piece of pristine bungle left on Earth (no roads, only native villages) and is 5 times the size of The Netherlands. Very popular among eco tourists and documentary makers because it only takes 30-60 minutes to get there. There are many touragencies, which I would recommend above finding your own way.
But again I talk too much, sorry.
Thanks for taking your time to converse with me and my longwinded stories.
@@jurgenolivieira1878 Anytime!! lol.
And I'd love to! Do you have instagram by chance?
We'll have to head to Surinam to try some real food that hasn't been watered down for tourists! lol We had to head back to America for an emergency, so we'll be looking for Americas trips to take!
Always happy to chat! I love getting new recommendations, tips, info, everything! So thank you!!
Being Dutch: The licorice thing was very funny.... I guess black salted licorice is a tast you need to learn to like when still a small child, if not, your lost forever... BTW: If you give me bag of the stuff I will eat it all in one go...
Hahaha glad you enjoyed it!! (More than we did 😂)
I definitely think it’s an acquired taste!! Just can’t relate. It’s crazy to think someone could just take down a whole bag!! 😂
Asian style burger haha its not the mosterd who made it spicy i think ;p
Great video and nice to see all the buildings i help to rebuild as a carpenter the last 30 years
The dwarf with the christmasthree has another name lol kabouter b...plug
Thank you!! That is so cool that you helped rebuild them!!!
@@IfWeGoTo Fun fact in Rotterdam was at Blijdorp (the zoo)
My colleague and I had to build a new Komodo monitor lizard enclosure and when it was finished one escaped within 2 months 😆
Luckily not our fault 😊
The big thing at your right (02:00) wow 14 years ago i see now

Thats scary!! bahahaha.
Thats so cool you worked on those houses! They are iconic!
@@IfWeGoTo uuhm it was in the zoo lol
Oh I was worried it had gotten out of the zoo! lol
I thought you mentioned working on the cube houses. Maybe I got confused!@@dimrrider9133
Haha, the buttplug-gnome is so famous 🤣 Typically Rotterdam to give a nickname to every building, bridge and artwork
I really love Rotterdam! It’s such a melting pot of cultures and of modern and old sections of the city
I loved it tbh… and I loved it even more because the city has fully embraced him and put his picture everywhere. 😂😂😂
It was a seriously cool city!! Can’t wait to head back!! Good people, good food, so much cool stuff. Definitely want to check out more of the art scene
@@IfWeGoTo Maybe next time you go to middelandstraat and kruiskade and eat decent surinam food instead of the microwaved crap from chinny's You also have a little china there Really nice Rotterdam born and raised 🙂
Will definitely have to check that out next time! Always up for some good food!!! Thank you! 😃
@@IfWeGoTo When you do take the route kruiskade middelandstraat up to delfshaven There is the pelgrimvaderskerk From where the pelgrim fathers set sail to amerika.
@@bonkie35 We didn't get to do that this time, but that would be pretty cool to see!! I think we have some family history there!!
You have forgotten one part of Rotterdam.
Next time as an American visit Delftshaven. This is because an important part of America's history started here. In 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers left for America from here. Via a stopover in England.
Oh interesting!! Next time we will have to do it!! We have some friends that live in Rotterdam so we will surely be back one day!
Hello... Very informative...but the video is a bit shaky
Sorry about that 😅
We’ve since upgraded cameras that have improved technology for that, but we just can’t justify using a huge gimbal!
2-Hour Walking Tour... what's a fair baseline tip, please.
Hi!! I think around 10 euro a person is about the standard! (but online suggests 5-20!)
@@IfWeGoTo thank you
So Beautiful ❤️🥰
Thank you!!!!
top thanx
Thank you!!!
10 years ago nobody wanted to visit and live in Rotterdam because it was deemed too ugly. The last decade the new central station has been build, together with much of the skyline and other prestigious projects like The Markthal and Depot museum. In the next 10 years they are planning to build / renovate 7-8 parks. It is for sure the fastest changing city in The Netherlands and not quite yet finished!
It was definitely a shock coming from older towns in Europe, but definitely has its own charm!!! We loved it, it’s a super cool city. Definitely excited to see how it continues to improve in the coming years!!
A tip: July 19 - 25 Nijmegen, if you are not afraid of big masses of people.
We love people!! Haha. Is there a festival or celebration?
@@IfWeGoTo It's the week of the four days march + Whole Nijmegen is one big party center.
That's awesome!! Is it just like a party or is there a special celebration?
@@IfWeGoTo It is a walking event with a party all week around it in various towns, but Nijmegen is the center of things.
The easiest explanation is in this video : ua-cam.com/video/pREWZLuJDZU/v-deo.html
Removed comment as this was meant for another video 😂
Hahaha no worries!
Feyenoord No.1
First thing to do when you arrive in Rotterdam, leave.
Next time you are in Rotterdam, you should also try the local specialty, Kapsalon.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapsalon
I wish we knew about this when we were there!! Next time we will try it!
Thank you so much! :D
