    Location: 8900 Gilman Drive, La Jolla
    Newsreel Media was first on scene of a brushfire during a red flag danger alert for fires, triggered by extremely low humidity, high winds, and no rain for almost 9 months.
    Our camera caught what appears to be a drone flying very close to a SDFD fire helicopter seconds after it dropped a load of water onto a flaming hillside.
    Just after the drone is recorded, someone yells "DRONE!", and 2 firefights are looking and pointing at the area the drone was flying. One firefighter runs down the street toward other fire crews, and appears to be pointing again at the area of the drone.
    Police were able to locate the drone pilot in an apartment complex on a ridge just above the fire. The drone was brought down and air support resumed.
    Drones are prohibited by both state and federal laws from flying near a wildfire. The FAA also prohibits flying near manned aircraft.
    Several water drops were also caught on camera, along with over 175 firefighters battling the blaze.
    The fire was limited to 3 acres, with no injuries and no structures lost.
    Remember folks, all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

    When I was a kid in the early 60s Gillman Drive was Highway 101, the only route to Los Angeles. That hill where all the condos are today, La Jolla Village and Woodlands South, was covered with cows.

    As an FAA Part 107 Certified drone pilot I am incensed at pilots like this guy who has no knowledge of what the rules are, and if he does know the rules he knows he's intentionally violating a federal law. He's a real idiot makes the rest of us look bad. I hope the FAA takes fines him $50k and sends him to jail for 1 year.

    Here's a weird question: Could drones be used to light all these recent fires. Recall in the last decade plus, we were told that "terrorists" were planning on using fires as a method to attack.

      I looked at the video posted at the channel you mentioned, and I think that was a separate drone incident that happened at the same time.
      In the video he posted it seems he flew directly over his house and back down, which is illegal during a fire, but not the one that was in the canyon along Gilman drive. The video says he was flying a Mavic, which would have some trouble flying into the canyon at a distance because the radio control for the Mavic does not perform well for that, compared to the new drones like Avata 2.
      Even weirder it seems he was confronted by Torrey Pines officials, even wearing an ID and driving an unmarked car, so probably not police.
      His video seems to show them talking to him at his home at 3:05 according to the video timestamp, so it would have been almost impossible to get there from Via Alacante, which is where the drone and pilot were contacted at about the same time. The streets in that area were pretty much all closed at that time.
      Oddly, his posted video from the drone shows a time of 3:23pm, which is 20 minutes AFTER he was contacted and told to keep the drone on the ground.
      Bottom line: I think the drone the firefighters saw was piloted by someone at the address given on Via Alacante, on the hill directly above the fire.

      @pyromen321 День тому +1

      @ interesting! From a quick street view comparison, this guy lives at the address mentioned over the radio, but they also said there were a couple of drones detected by Torrey pines?
      I guess multiple people brought out drones!

    • @newsreelmedia
      @newsreelmedia  День тому +1

      The Poole street address is very close to Torrey Pines where they were about to start a PGA Tournament (with a low flying blimp), but they seemed to have found the drone and pilot at 3139 Via Alicante, which would be the perfect place to fly the drone from (any other time, of course).

    Thank you for the reporting. This is south of UCSD, not SDSU. Was that really a drone the first appearance? So fast seemed like a bug... just a lamen here so not saying it wasn't a drone just seemed like a bug to my untrained eyes

      Oops! My 2AM edits strike again!
      As best I can tell, the object in both videos is about a foot long and about 2 inches high. In both clips it's being pushed by gusts that were about 30mph at the time. The drones I fly (which are very common on the market) have a max speed of 47 mph and 60 mph respectively, so with that tailwind they could have a max groundspeed of 77 mph and 90 mph. Those are the top speeds, but even at 1/3 of those speeds the blur would be about what you see in the video.

    For those assuming a 250 gram drone can take out a plane well you’re wrong, planes are designed to hit birds and continue to fly, their engines can also inject a bird without major issues. A birds weighs much more so look at a geese!

      @@GWS-rl4wh Each one of those Firemen standing around have specific jobs that are important to locating, fighting a fire, directing and coordinating resources and evacuations. I think they did an excellent job fighting a monsterous wind driven fire.

      @tomparker9966 From what I have seen, not just in this fire but in many large fires, too many chiefs and not enough Indians thinking come to mind. There's an awful lot of guys standing around the vehicles vs in the ditch putting out fires. You can always use more guys working hoses, connections over chiefs talking to one another. But hey, what do I know. I was in a ditch before and could have used more help getting things done quicker. My take anyway.

    • @tomparker9966
      @tomparker9966 19 годин тому +2

      @@GWS-rl4wh I don't disagree about more men on the ground, my point was each person is trained for certain responsibilities that are just as important as managing hoses and getting in the flames. These wind driven fires require lots of men from different departments and they are up against fires so big they can't be put out. I can't imagine what it's like for them to battle a beast that can't be controlled.
