This is why I like Johnny's channel the most of all the gaming channels. He buys and collects stuff he has memories about, he doesn't just buy stacks of games to have them like most people. I've actually started to sell off some of the more collectible stuff I have so I can buy the games I had as a kid or have good memories about.
Totally agree! Some youtubers just buy a lot of random games and show hundreds of pickups videos. What about playing them? The memories of them? That kind of thing...
Yeah, I don't really care that much about games I never played as a kid. There are a few exceptions. I think there is kind of a shortlist of games for each system that people should collect because they are so good. I would much rather spend $50 on a good game that is common than on a rare game that sucks.
Exactly. There are two kinds of collectors, those who buying games and enjoy them and those who buying games just to own. The first kind are true gamers, the second are just pathetic, it's like buying a Ferrari and never getting it out of the garage, what's the point?
Serros Retroman I guess you become the second type after being the first time for a LONG time. For instance, I collect a lot of retro games that I owned but also a lot that I never played to play them (like a lot of classics that I couldn't play at the time). But after a while and after I bought almost everything I wanted I started looking at mint game in box just to have my favorite like trophies. But I still open them and play them.
Hey HCG, thought I'd just drop in and say keep up the sweet videos - I'm primarily a PC gamer myself, never really got into the consoles but I can certainly relate with the nostalgic memories of old school games (certainly FF7!) I've been watching long before I started YT and just hit 30k subs, the fact you keep doing what you do is amazing my man, well done.
I love the fact that everything you picked wasn't necessarily about its monetary value or rarity. Its about how these individual games were important to you and the experiences you had with these games and reading about them. I'm glad you had a fun time down in portland, its probably the last gaming expo I'll make time to go to.
Aww, Shadowgate. Great music. Great memories. That music always takes me right back to my childhood. Glad I still have it...and my original NES. :) As always, thanks for the memories, HCG!
Retro gaming brings so much memories. That's why I love your collection Johnny, you go by nostalgia and fun factor, just like myself, when I started collecting, I made a list of games that really marked me when I was a kid, so I started 10 years ago, I now I'm almost done (85%).
+Game Sack Dave Could not figure out that game on my own. Had use The Power. Wanted to play Deja Vu after, but never got the chance. I think I have the ROM now....I gottta go look at something...
i was an exchange student from Brazil in USA back in 1990 and remenber watching a 12 year old baseball fan playing with his friends *Baseball Stars* and, somehow, this game alone got me interested in baseball since then !
THIS is why I really love watching this channel. That indie game that the guy gave you, I saw Pat the NES Punk was given it as well and was incredibly dismissive about the whole thing in one of his videos. You really showed interest and support for it! Very cool of you.
THANK YOU!!!!, I remember playing Golgo 13 as a kid but forgot the name until you featured it in this video. It was really bugging me on and off for decades.
I really like your videos man, the passion you exude when you talk about the things you're into is utterly infectious, dont be so suprised that people want you to sign their stuff
Like your Channel Johnny. Been a fan since 2011, first time posting. Your gaming memory episodes are my favorite. The days of Skipping school and seeing your neighbor/friends newest games and spending hours playing them were the days.
Great video man, the stories about the games themselves are why I keep watching over and over again. Just an interesting and positive channel. Always feel better after watching.
Of all the classic retro games that I have,T&C SURF is by far my most fav none Mario Bros related game.T&C SURF also has pretty cute gaming music too that gets stuck in your head.
I said the ocean before you even spit it out lol I will never forget that . It's like hearing the sound of colossus from the xmen arcade cabinet or hearing haduken from street fighter 2 when I walked in my local arcade ahhh good times . Love the videos bringing back memories
I love the song that you played when you brought up Lady Stalker. That song literally brings me back to my childhood playing Land Stalker on the Genesis with my father & brother. It's so nostalgic to me. I still pick that game up once a year to play it. I really wish they made a sequel or apparently they did but didn't bring it to the U.S. I don't know why they didn't but I would SO LOVE TO PLAY THAT GAME!!!
Yes! Landstalker is a fantastic game. I got it recently and played it for the first time. One of my best gaming sessions in a loooong time. The soundtrack is a masterpiece. Someone bring us Ladystalker in english please!!
Johnny, I was working at Toys R Us in the mid 90s. There was a HUGE print run of Star Tropics and Zoda's Revenge. I remember we had a discount bin of both games for MONTHS. We also got a huge shipment of NES Advantage joysticks around the same time. I'm guessing that Nintendo was cleaning out their warehouses of NES stuff in 1996.
The game that I have fond memories of, well there is a few - Pro Wrestling - NES, Spy vs Spy - NES, Avoid The Noid - Commodore 64, Impossible Mission - Commodore 64, Lode Runner - Commodore 64, Phantasmagoria - PC, Leisure Suit Larry (all of them) - PC and Goonies - NES and many, many others
Totally with you there Johnny. Collecting is about the memories and personal connections with games rather than their material worth. On another note, I must pick up The Incal for Xmas. You introduced me to Mouse Guard years ago too, so I have to commend your taste in comics!
Great video, Johnny! Videogame purchase is somethinh really really cool! It means a lot lot whwn you're really putting your hands on games hat mean something to you. I love video games! Keep up the good work!
I love your channel. I simply watch it because I like your attitude and how passionate you are with videogames. I love how you collect games that connect to your childhood. I'm the same way. that is why I enjoy your channel so much. I love shadowgate. I rented the crap out of it back then. well my parents did lol. I was too young. about 12 years old. all my games I collect, I play. they instantly bring me back to when I was a kid playing them. for this, I will always love videogames. till the day I die. to all the idiots out there that say videogames are stupid and they rot your brain, I heard this throughout the years growing up, screw you! thanks Johnny. I love your channel. keep up with the great videos. you rock.
Cool stuff dude! PRGE was awesome and it was really cool chatting with you. It's people like you and Rob that make it worth going to these expos...thanks again and hope to see you guys again next year! BTW, Snatcher was awesome :D
I couldn't help but be a tooouch gutted that you didn't mention or have playing in the background, Blind Guardian's - The Bard's Song, on the Bard's Tale bit. Utterly amazing song, inspired by the Bard's Tale game. Oh, and I know you couldn't have aactually played the song, but I still can't help but be disappointed :p
So damn cool, great pick ups, Castlevania is one of my all time favorites. Shadowgate is so cool, still love to play it and that soundtrack is excellent. I really need to go to some retro conventions, I've yet to make it to one.
Great pick ups! I visited an anime convention last month and got some cool stuff. The complete series and movie of "Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water", a Nadia figure and 3 concept art books of Evangelion!
Now that's how a pick-up video should be! Games that mean something personal and not just mountains of R@RE and cheap games just to fill up a shelve never to be be played. Nice vid Johnny.
My cousin gave me that T and C game in like 2004 or 2005 or something and I sold it to gamestop for 60 cents... I actually used to have a town and country surf board also which was my first shortboard.
Shadowgate! Shadowgate was great. It's soundtrack is great. I just LOVE it when you use the Shadowgate theme in the background of a video, I have noticed it in several of your videos.
Shadow gate mad props, I remember being the youngest in the family at my cousins house and 6 of us huddled around watching my brother play it, they never let me play. Omg the music just takes me back to that place, so I totally understand. Even if I didn't get to play it was just so cool. I love that game, when I got older I finally played it a ton got it on my GBC got to get the one they just put out on the PC......but Johnny totally recommend you try to find The Uninvited by the same people that made shadowgate. As always great video
My mother read Heavy Metal magazine too I even bought her some old issues for her birthday the one issue I wanted to get was September 1981 issue with Tarrna on the cover riding her giant bird.
Yea we were talking about star tropics 2 at the expo. Good price for a minty CIB for sure. I wouldn't call it a rare game, but I dont even see its loose very often at all.
That's Floating World Comics! I worked in that building when you posted this video. I've spent many quarters at that Ground Kontrol around the corner! There's another excellent new arcade bar in PDX called Quarterworld. I think you'd dig it
Nice one mate. Was great to see your pick ups. To be honest I always enjoy game pick up videos with a story behind them rather than a rare game pick up. I've come to realise the games I pick up that don't have a connection to my past don't hold my interest much. And nice t-shirt and comic too thanks!
Though I've never heard of T and C, I know what you mean about the 8 bit sound of the sea. I get the same reaction when I go back and play Outrun for the Master System. So campy so ridiculus but it just takes me back to when I was a senior in high school back in '88. Nice Revenge of Shinobi T BTW!
patrick thompson Very cool, I bought a CD a few years back that had the game music from the first 3 games and I put it on my iTunes and iPod lol but never did put it on my phone. Good idea!
I love your passion for games. Wish I had the space, and $ to have a collection like yours but even now I don't have enough space on my shelves for just the games I already have. Still it's awesome to see how you clearly love the games you have and almost every single one I've seen since I've subscribed has a story to go with it. Glad I subscribed love this channel.
Great pick ups! it's odd you said it was a good feeling that you were close to getting every game you wanted as a kid nostalgia wise. I have always said I never want every game wether it be a complete collection of nes games or just games you wanted as a kid. I never want the hunt to end.
I can't lie, I am crazy jealous of those prices, haha. Especially Castlevania! Whenever I find a loose cart around here in Nova Scotia it's wildly overpriced, let alone in the box! I think that copy of The Incal is really pricey. It's the original printing. I think they've since released a new printing that's around $30-$40. Very cool! I love Moebius' art.

I've always wondered where you get your t-shirts... I only know of Theyetee and Redbubble and I have not seen many gaming t-shirts in Sweden aside from a few Mario tees in GAME-stores.
Awesome video! My wife actually found a shirt like that, but it was a child's shirt, so she cut out the design and framed it for my gameroom along with a couple others like it
This is why I like Johnny's channel the most of all the gaming channels. He buys and collects stuff he has memories about, he doesn't just buy stacks of games to have them like most people. Haha yeh like people in the early twenties buying NES games and saying they 'grew up with them'
Serros Retroman I guess you become the second type after being the first time for a LONG time. For instance, I collect a lot of retro games that I owned but also a lot that I never played to play them (like a lot of classics that I couldn't play at the time). That theme song from Shadowgate was the first ring tone I recorded when I bought a smart phone, so good. A lot of fun memories with that game.
I know! such a wonderful classic!
I really want Shadowgate!

I spent many hours dying in T&C as a kid, those damn waves and that skateboard level X D
Golgo 13 is actually one of the games I have had for my NES since childhood! I had some random games, like monster party, and a bunch of basics
Golgo 13 is a masterpiece, with many different gameplay styles and you never get bored.
I said the ocean before you even spit it out lol I will never forget that . It's like hearing the sound of colossus from the xmen arcade cabinet or hearing haduken from street fighter 2 when I walked in my local arcade ahhh good times . Love the videos bringing back memories

I hate watching these videos because games are so expensive where I live but at the same time I love seeing them
Aw man shadowgate one of favorite games for the nes that game music was on par with Castlevania. I have such found memories of that game.
From what I've played of the incomplete fan translation of lady stalker, I think it's absolutely brilliant.
T & C was a great game. My brother and I played that game for hours upon hours. Solid purchase
This video right here is what gamings all about.
A True Player
Great game pickups. Those games ate up alot of hours of my childhood on the NES.

That movie-based-game nostalgia is why im desperately seeking small soldiers for ps1
Baseball Stars ftw!!! I loved that game on NES as well....good times
Thumbs up for T&C 8 bit ocean sound! Lots of feels for that game.
Cool stuff dude! PRGE was awesome and it was really cool chatting with you. It's people like you and Rob that make it worth going to these expos...thanks again and hope to see you guys again next year! BTW, Snatcher was awesome :D

I remember watching my dad and his friends play Shadowgate when I was like 3.
THE INCAL, that's brilliant!!! I just got my copy this summer. Great stuff.
You have the best channel on UA-cam! Keep doing it forever :-). Greetings from Norway
Man this guy is cool, I'd love to have a chat with this dude, be even better if I could meet up and game with him, his collection is epic.
Yes The Incal one of the best comics out there :D
Now that's how a pick-up video should be! Games that mean something personal and not just mountains of R@RE and cheap games just to fill up a shelve never to be be played. Nice vid Johnny.
My cousin gave me that T and C game in like 2004 or 2005 or something and I sold it to gamestop for 60 cents... I actually used to have a town and country surf board also which was my first shortboard.
Who framed Roger rabbit was and still is a great movie of mine when I was growing up
That comic shop is Floating World Comics! Such a rad place! I picked up some Katsuhiro Otomo stuff there during my Portland trip in 2018.
Baseball Stars is amazing! This made my day.
Baseball stars is the baseball game I really like on the NES. Now I've gotta find that one because of you. : P
Every time I watch your show you make me want to spend more money. Cheers Johnny great program matey :)
R.B.I. Baseball was what me and my friends played back in the day.. pretty much the same damn thing as Baseball Stars but shorter, fatter characters.
Shadowgate! Shadowgate was great. It's soundtrack is great.
I just LOVE it when you use the Shadowgate theme in the background of a video, I have noticed it in several of your videos.
Oh man, rizz is an awesome guy. You'll love Armed for Battle.
I remember getting this as a kid and thought it was absurdly hard.
I found Castlevania, in box complete, perfect condition, at a second hand store for like 5 dollars. Castlevania rules.
I have good memories of playing Star Tropics. Didn't know they made a sequel.
Man I can't believe this video is 7 yrs old already!
Those pickups are nearly as epic as the shinobi t-shirt, but nothing beats RoS
Wow.. lady stalker. I remember reading about it too. Now that struck some nostalgia. I can't imagine seeing that game for sale. Nice pickup.
Shadow gate mad props, I remember being the youngest in the family at my cousins house and 6 of us huddled around watching my brother play it, they never let me play. Omg the music just takes me back to that place, so I totally understand. Even if I didn't get to play it was just so cool. As always great video
Baseball Stars 2 on Neo Geo Love that game one of my favorite baseball games.

Haha, I heard you cue in T&C Surf Designs before announcing and thought -could it be? Finally, someone else gets T&C!
Your face when you talk about the ocean XD. MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY
Every time I see and hear about LJN I think about AVGN lol
Though I've never heard of T and C, I know what you mean about the 8 bit sound of the sea. I get the same reaction when I go back and play Outrun for the Master System. So campy so ridiculus but it just takes me back to when I was a senior in high school back in '88. Nice Revenge of Shinobi T BTW!
*whistle* Damn! Getting boxed games for this cheap is pretty darn amazing! Congrats on your pick ups!
Really enjoy your videos and all the RPG love :)
I beat shadow gate So many times as a kid!! I loved that game! One of my favorites for the Nintendo! Nice pickups Johnny!!
Love that game too, the soundtrack is so cool
brillopad6901 Yeah the soundtrack was so good!!!! NES music doesn't get any better than that
patrick thompson
I still play through it a few times a year, I think the Castlevania soundtrack is excellent too.
brillopad6901 agreed! Castlevania is actually on my phone for listening ^_^
patrick thompson
Very cool, I bought a CD a few years back that had the game music from the first 3 games and I put it on my iTunes and iPod lol but never did put it on my phone. Good idea!
I need to go to the Portland Gaming Expo next year.
How can the boxes still look so good after all these years?
I love your passion for games. Wish I had the space, and $ to have a collection like yours but even now I don't have enough space on my shelves for just the games I already have. Still it's awesome to see how you clearly love the games you have and almost every single one I've seen since I've subscribed has a story to go with it. Glad I subscribed love this channel.
I need to save up to go to one of these expos/conventions , you always find great stuff there. Love the grabs
So funny that Hot Topic is "exotic" in Canada! No judgement, though. Vancouver itself is hella exotic in eastern N.C.!
Great pick ups! it's odd you said it was a good feeling that you were close to getting every game you wanted as a kid nostalgia wise. I have always said I never want every game wether it be a complete collection of nes games or just games you wanted as a kid. I never want the hunt to end.
I LOVE T&C Great pick!
that gameplay for Armed for Battle II reminded me of Heroes of Might and Magic except 8bit
This makes me want to go retro game shopping. Nice finds!!
alot of great games and storys
7:00
Hey, it's all good man whatever floats ur boat on an 8 bit ocean!
T&C ROCKS!
The skateboarding is SO fun!
nice pick ups. i keep hearing great things about Portland. i wonder why they have so many good finds there?
I used to watch how my father played golgo 13 and he just get to the last act but at the end i finished it. I really like golgo 13
Oh god I love that Castlevania box art, and in mint condition? Money well spent Johnny!
Thank you so much for the Armed For Battle segment at 12:31. You are as awesome in person as you are in the videos, and I really appreciate this. You got T&C Surf Designs for $18? In 1988, after I begged like crazy, my mom bought it for me for roughly $50. :)
great pick ups johnny. I LOVE T&C!
R.I.P. Moebius.
Lady Stalker sounds like the creeper's training simulator. lol
Yeah, it looks like Landstalker's general look from that bit you shown, I wonder if it was made by the same people, because that's what seals the deal on connection.
HOLY SHIT! THE INCAL IN PERFECT CONDITION! nice one :D
Anyone played Rockin Kats for the NES? Loved that one a lot and in fact got it :)
I've always wondered where you get your t-shirts... I only know of Theyetee and Redbubble and I have not seen many gaming t-shirts in Sweden aside from a few Mario tees in GAME-stores.
Ahhhhh... The 8Bit version of the ocean, which is the same as the 8Bit version of crowds cheering lol
I love your shirts!
great pick ups, i like to buy games that i have memories of too. :) and that comic the incal looks so nice, im going to look that up some time. :)
Great episode!!! Hi from Quebec ;)
Revenge of Shinobi shirt is cool as hell.
Awesome video! My wife actually found a shirt like that, but it was a child's shirt, so she cut out the design and framed it for my gameroom along with a couple others like it
