  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In 2011 James Beck traveled to every state in the US running a social experiment called Serf Bliss. For 1 year he wanted to see if he could live based on a pay-it-forward system. During this journey James learned how simple acts of kindness can unlock humans potential in unexpected ways. In this riveting and charming talk James Beck explains how picking up dog poop can change lives.
James Beck was born in Bremerton, Washington in 1975. His childhood was defined by a tumultuous relationship with his father - a relationship that his dad eventually dedicated his life to repairing in order to break the cycle of generational dysfunction. James then committed to recording this journey by writing a book about the process, giving himself a goal to complete it within ten years.
While pursuing that dream, James found himself in various lines of work to make ends meet and finance his literary goals. After finding himself in everything from starting a salsa company to working as a baggage handler for Alaska Airlines to assisting in managing a post-surgical recovery facility,
James discovered his natural talent for solving soft tissue problems as a massage therapist. While working at Burke Williams Day Spa in Santa Monica, one of his clients recognized this skill and hired him to perform bodywork for the cast of the NBC hit shows, “American Gladiators” and “The Biggest Loser”
In 2010, James completed his book “Hey Dad, Remember Me.” In the spirit of giving back to others in the way his father did for him on April Fool’s Day 2011, he gave away all of his possessions and spent a year traveling across America serving others. James called this journey SerfBliss, which became the first phase of a ‘Pay-it-Forward’ social project. James Beck’s story is an adventure of epic proportions.

What a great way to start the New Year! Altruism and hope. I love his philosophy, and I love that he isn't just talk. He walked the walked; and is as far as I can see continuing to do so. SWEET. Thank you.

I shared the story of Beck's travels and selfless "pay it forward" journey. Their reactions were wonderful. However, they had one question that I promised to pass on: Does anyone know how he go to HI with just a car and no money?

I know how... my apologies for not responding sooner. (I have a family now).
The person I served in Alabama donated my first day to help a church feed the homeless. The pastor of that church told me that he wanted to fulfill one of my needs.
I told him that I needed to fly to Alaska (he bought me that ticket).
Also, I had a girl in Boston raise $1200 for Serf Bliss anonymously.
I did donation based massage & I teach advanced touch.
People loved setting up donation based massage days.
People were generous when they could be.
In all honesty, I was turning down money from people multiple times a month.
My project was supposed to test me, test humanity, & test my understanding of God.
The women I served in Ohio, Indiana called every month after I served them & asked if i needed money.
My answer was always 'No, but thank you."
      State 4 I had $120.
I always had just enough money to make it to another state.
But when I did a donation massage day, I set that aside that money to pay for plan tickets.
(I also flew to my mom's 60th birthday.)
