Keesteel Broad Axe Restoration, Hafting & Sheath
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лип 2017
- Restoration of an old Australian Keesteel broad axe. This broad axe is cleaned up and then hafted (or hung) using a traditional method. The handle is trimmed along the bottom of the eye and then shaped to fit. A wedge is cut and also shaped to fit and then hammered in. This method facilitates removal of the handle so it can be hafted either right or left handed (the video shows a right handed handle).
I also sharpened up the broad axe and wanted to test it out to ensure the hafting was sound. This was the first time I've ever tried to hew a log! So bear with me and don't laugh too much!
And of course, an axe restoration isn't complete until that sharp edge is covered up with a nice leather sheath.
Enjoy! - Навчання та стиль
just a comment from a guy with 6 broad axes and hewed many a log., the flat back on the axe is critical for easy hewing with a very smooth finish as the end product. I always use a straight edge to check for flatness. a double bevel cutting edge causes the axe to bite into the log to deeply instead of acting like a plane. the way I was taught from masters, was a 1 mm or so was all you want to take off with the broad axe. the heavy removal is done with felling or double bit axes. great job. perfect handle for that axe head.
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Once again, VERY NICE!!! Mr. Will. A few months ago but I still enjoy your rebuilds!!! Most EXCELLENT!!!!!!
That axe is ready for hard work! I love the leather sheath! Well done!
You sir, have earned a subscription. Love to see people still using an actual craft.
Very good! One of the most beautiful works of this kind, and the cover was perfect
Wow, you're a real master, you're perfect for such great ideas and many more .... I congratulate you on your wonderful creativity.
You've got a talent my friend. Watching your restoration projects is very interesting. Please keep them coming!
Nice job sir. Love this kind of stuff.
Love watching craftsmanship like this, nice job mate! Hopefully skills like this carry on well into the future.
Nicely done. Appreciate the workmanship.
Really like your take on the angled handle in relation to the bit!
I've never hewn a log before either, but that appeared to be done extremely well, When the masters make their vertical wedge cut thingies, they sink that axe, and do it in two or four swings. Awesome Job!
I may not be able to do what you do, but I enjoy watching you turn trash into treasure. You've earned a new subscriber.
Nice, between this and the workbench I am extremely impressed! Would usually get bored with videos and skip along but watched every second of your videos. You've got a nice editing style somewhere between jimmy diresta and the primitive technology guy, your work does the talking. I'm subbing and turning on notifications, can't wait for more videos.
Thanks for this feedback mate, great to hear! More videos on the way in the future!
good job. It's nice to see a nice restoration

That's awesomeness right there my friend.
Thomas Babcock i
Keep up the hard work man!
Will, I absolutely loved watching the progression of the restoration of the broad ax. Ditto what watafucup said about your editing style. You keep your audience wanting to watch the whole video. And the leather sheath was the cherry on top. I have been watching your various video's and man is there anything you can't do? lmao! You are a gifted and talented guy and can't wait for more.
Hey Matthew, I like your videos! Keep up the good work!
Very nice work my friend, turned out sweet.
Fantastic video mate

+Jackson Stapylton thanks mate!
awesome. well done, sir.
Fantastic, turned out really nice, and it works a treat as well. You look like you gained a skill by the end of that log, nice work.
Yeah Cheers Max. Bit of a tricky skill, but I'd love to hew a proper log square one day. Maybe even use in some sort of construction
nice mate. just bought two old axe heads off the bay will need the knowledge from this cheers. subscribed!
I love how you don't chit chat with the camera, you're all about your business and it's great
Keep up the good work man!!
Subbed and Liked
+James Oliver thanks for the feedback! Yeah I don't think I'd be up to chatting with the camera anytime soon!
Will..i admire your craftsmanship..and you surely deserve more subs...hope to see more videos soon..and love the style of your editing too...
Thanks mate - still a relatively new channel, so hopefully in time I can keep building it up! More videos to come along the line when I can fit them into a hectic life! Thanks
Nice work!!
Very nice! Some of the older broad axes actually had a slight curve in the haft away from the flat side so that you could get closer to the logs if you were making a log building.
Nice work bro
love it. your videos are great.
Thanks heaps!
This is amazing. I'm so jealous of your skills. I wish I had the resources and knowledge to learn crafts like this. Seriously impressed!!
+Ryan Lackey thanks mate. Anyone can learn this stuff mate, have a go, you might surprise yourself!
Ryan Lackey what state do u live in? there are lots of weeklong campout events that teach stuff like this.
Great work. Subscribed
Bewdy. Like the quick trip out the back for a bit of wood
Handsome and a craftsman :) very impressive
Finally! someone who didn't just run over it with an angle grinder to "repair" an axe head. Good to see someone do it properly for once.
I'm guessing you're from Australia too, love the videos! Keep it up👍🏼👍🏼
Very nice !!
Nice job! Thanks for the video. I guess I need to invest in an angle grinder for my shop!!
+Wood And Screw Yeah an angle grinder is an invaluable tool!
For me the angle grinder is indispensable.
Impressed. Subbed!
Rip arm hair😂 dude you are the best craftsman i have every seen. Youll have no problem getting to 10 mil in no time. Keep making the videos and to add that beard is superb👌
+Alejandro Flores don't know about 10 mil but I'll try to keep putting out quality content! Thanks Alejandro
Nice 💪, subscribed
That was an awesome restoration and a highly enjoyable video, great work my man! I'm a little concerned about how you wedged it, if it was me I would've done your method but with the traditional wedge and glue in the handle as an extra precaution. I think that's just my phobia of flying axe heads talking though... Anyways good job, you've got yourself a new subscriber :)
Will, gotta tell ya, the sound of you using that file(I don't know my tools, sorry) on the top of the wood handle - the part that goes into the axe head - at regular speed is absolutely orgasmic.
Sweet!
Why does this not have more views
I mean hay for your first time hewing a log u did pretty good if I do say myself
Perfect
I inherited a keesteel hatchet. Magic to use compèred to the other rubbish around!
Glad you didn't polish the whole thing like a mirror. Nice work!
Great Job, subbed ...
Thanks very much :)
Very good¡¡
Super !
Love your videos! Can't wait for more. Just my 2 cents - pairing timelapse with slo-mo at interesting steps would be a nice change of pace. But keep up the great work!
+Jens Norman thanks. Yes it's been a consideration and will be trying to implement and try out in a future video :)
I have power watched all your vids today and am loving them... such great craftsmanship - can I ask what your background is? - you seem to have a wide skill set ... keep posting man, absolutely addicted to these excellent restorations - thanks!
+James Butler thanks mate! I'm just a dude who tinkers in lots of different stuff. Always learning! I'm an electrician by trade
Love the video, and the editing is superb! One thing I didn’t understand was that I don’t see the point of the buttoned strap at the bottom of the sheath. It doesn’t seem to do anything. I would have liked to see something more functional, that wrapped the blade so that it didn’t slide off easily. Either way, great video!
Good job! Keep fingers...;) Like!
Great Videos. I didn't know if I would be interested in this Axe restoration, but I really enjoyed it. Are you going to brand the handle and the sheath? Just as your other commenters have said, I am subscribed and looking forward to more videos. Thanks!
+Wingnut Antics yeah I probably will now that I've got my brand. Though I probably need a smaller one too for finer work. Thanks for watching!
genial
Первый раз вижу , чтобы так расклинивали !!!
Great video, what is the name of the rivets or fasteners called you used to bind both pieces of leather
Nicely done! Was that a brass brush you used to clean the rust?
nicw job. looks like it bit you a few times on the knuckles :D
next time u do a axe or hamer try soking the handel in boil lensed oil over night then torch it i swear and live by this texhnec for handels
It will be very to write in the description the amount of time used in each project!
You know to make it more awesome to look.
Why did you add the snap on the end of the leather cover? Is it to make it fit more snug? Nice video by the way. I’ve been binge watching a lot of them over the past few days
Have you thought of investing in a sandblaster?
There was a decent one for couple hundred bucks down at supercheap recently.
Dude where you been keep making videos
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Now I know you’re Australian 🇦🇺
You a member of axe junkys? You did a great job on this it is a butifull axe
+Suburban Survivalist yeah I am mate
Preaty sharp
Nice one Will. Im in country NSW. Where do you get your leather from?
Thanks Twig. I got my leather from Tandy Leather. They are in Sydney I believe and only took a couple of days to ship to me
Broad Axe handles are supposed to have a bend in the shaft toward the head end.. that's what prevents you from wallowing out the center of the log.. nice job on the restoration of the head though.
How's that sheath stay on?
Very nice will. Could you have just used a wedge and epoxy to secure the handle? Or was the handle too small on the first place??
+benjamin felland you could do that if you want. This method allows a decent amount of cant to the handle, while allowing the handle to be removed for hafting left handed
How do you remove it for left handed use? Kind of like taking a pick axe handle off?
Subbed. Nice work. What type of wood for the handle and the wedge?
+Justin Robertson handle was spotted gum and the wedge was from the firewood pile so I'm not sure on that one
It looked like redgum to me.
Awesome Job man!, Where do you source your leather? Im in AUS too
+Scott Gates Tandy leather
Nice sheath but you should not "back-bevel" the cutting edge. I wonder if the head will come loose with use? How did you get the handle to bend (appropriately)?
no wonder they made good furniture the wood chopper is a wood dresser as well
how come no heat treatment on the iron will?
Those rivets you used for the leather, is there a particular name for those?
+The Whiskey Gunner they are just called copper rivets. You can get brass ones too. The ring is called a burr I believe
You can get a real nice edge on an axe with a norton knife stone
Axe from haven
An axe like that is supposed to have an offset handle. Also, the bevel you created on the back side of the bit is usually not made. The back should be flat. Otherwise, fun watching.
If you put a bucket of water below your sander, you'll have much less of a mess to clean up.
What part of the country are you in?
So you're a Hitachi man I see
Not to be a miser but shouldn't the strap go across the back?
ive learn more...
I've never seen a handle wedge like that. Where'd you get that idea?
Learnt it off Steve Lehmann - he's an Australian prolific axe collector
Will Matthews my first reaction was "damn, this guy really messed up that wedge" but after looking up Steve and some forum reading, I finally realized the genius of this wedge system. It's so you can knock out the back wedge, take off the handle, flip the head and put it back together and bam! Now you have a left and right bevel axe in one
+Eric Brown that's it in one Eric! It's very versatile when it comes to broad axe hanging methods. Just to clarify though, you'd still need two handles, a left and a right. This a e is hafted right handed
Will Matthews oh you're right! You'd need two handles
should it not have a rather short handle?
short handes looks t be a style from where im from, northern europe.
Yes for sure you can have a shorter handle and many broad axes do as you've mentioned. I'm 6'5" though, so a longer handle suits me much better :)
Что ж это за топор, если его напильник спокойно берет?
Is there any instructional videos where people talk ? Any other channels besides wranglerstar ?recommendations please !
gloves are better than skin !!!
