Radio London was on satellite, with radio Caroline several years ago and London had that extra bit of magic.

When I first heard Radio London in 1965 it was different from the other radio stations.

Big L was the best ...note that the transcript mishears the "Bulova" watch advert.

Big L was pioneering as - unlike Caroline - it was an American style of delivery with imported label classics. We saw Tony Blackburn in his Sounds of The Sixties tour last week and he said Radio London remains his first love

It's doubtful whether they ever operated on 75 Kilowatts, it was a ploy operated on Caroline, who increased their power to 50k

Radio London had a 50kw RCA Ampliphase transmitter but I heard that they couldn't run anything like that power into their antenna, more like 25-30kw, at least in the early days, perhaps they eventually sorted it out?

Hard to believe that professional radio stations always suffered from being on poor quality medium wave - even the local ones - whereas today, if you have the right equipment and you know how to do it, you can launch a one (wo)man outfit from your bedroom - come on the air occasionally and do a live show and have it play random music from your laptop during downtime - and it can sound better than even today’s FM stations and can be received from anywhere where internet is available - no interference from other stations or fade outs and flanging, Luxembourg-style - you can even let the listeners see what you are playing - if you tag the tracks properly - spell the names of artists, groups and songs correctly, as the performers do - correct spelling and grammar fall by the wayside!
Four shillings and threepence for a packet of Richmond cigarettes - that’s about 22p in new money!
