I hope Nikon get to see this and watch it all. Especially to feel the emotion that Raymond gives near the end. It nearly had me to tears too. And it made me feel like I was part of the universal group of people that are photographers. Photography is emotion, and Leigh and Raymond have always brought it to the screen. If im gonna buy a Z8 its gonna be on just this video alone.
    Thank you Leigh and Raymond.
Oh Leigh, you will always be Snapchick to me 😊🙏❤

I'm retired and have been using a Nikon D7100 for many years. But now I've been asking myself why I don't consider mirrorless and full-frame. Price has always deterred me, but now, at my age, I feel it's time to dip into my savings and make good use of some of the money I earned. The price of the Z9 again deterred me, but the capabilities combined with the more reasonable price of the Z8, and YOUR video, has convinced me that it's time. . .Time for a Z8! Great video, one of the VERY BEST camera reviews I've ever seen. All the best to both of you!

This has been the best video I have seen on UA-cam about the Z8. Not about the specs, but the heartfelt emotion of sharing a journey with your family.
    Prayers for a speedy recovery.

    Raymond, WOW man.
    WHat an incredble video.
I am a Z6ii shooter and I cannot even imagine needing anything more but I keep looking at reviews just to get insight , inspiration and tips. On the inspiration scale this video is way way way past 10.
LEigh has been an inspiration for many years as, latterly have you but this video supposedly about the Z8 was about much more. You really naied the fact that it is a tool and that the purpose of the photography ahs as much to do with the photography as anything else. It is nort even all about composition. It is all about EVERYTHING that is going on. I love the fact that you added in the details about your trip and that car journey in particular. That choice you made to go left and catch that timelapse was just amazing - I remember doing similar things.
The emotion you shared with us was amazing adn I an so glad you didn't just do another take and not reveal that emotion to us. You kept it in and we are the richer for it. THe love and care you have for your wife and our friend is amazing. Thank you so much for allowing us to share in that.
I wish her well and a speedy recovery to even better health and fitness.
And cringy and sugary though it might seem - The love you have just makes me happy!!

Most people including myself purchased the Z9 because it was the only up to date capable camera at the time even though it’s form factor, size and weight was completely unnecessary

I sold my favourite D500, D850 and 24-70 f2.8 to purchase the Z8 as soon as it landed in South Africa. NO regrets….love it for my wildlife hobby and love the 24-120 f4 Z. Can’t wait to get the 180-600 Z. I kept my D780 mainly for use in converting slides and photos to digital - 24 megapixel is ideal - and street use with the nifty 50 f1.8.

I run a sports imaging company and was about to pull the trigger on a couple Z9's and then this camera came out. I now have 2 of these Z8's in my arsenal. The only differences that affect me are
    1) Battery life (I own 4 x EN-EL 15C's so no big deal)
    2) Buffer size (I could not care less, as I am not a "machine gun" style sports guy. I anticipate action and can minimize burst)
The fact that there is no "grip" is of no concern. I rarely (if ever) shoot vertical. The card difference is no concern as I never shoot video and a 256GB CF Express gives me thousands of RAW image capacity.
This thing is a superbly fast focusing, and easy to manage tool. It reacts faster than I could ever imagine.
    BUY ONE (or 2) !!

Finally a review made how reviews should be made 👏 I’ll receive my Z8 in the coming week. Initially, after watching the more technical types of reviews, I was not going to buy the Z8 and wait for Z7 iii. But then I thought that Z7 most have even less heat dissipation capabilities when video recording, then I immediately ordered the Z8 when I received a notification that it was in stock - can’t wait. I have had the D810 so I know the size and weight can be an advantage and you get used to carry it.

Oh Wow! This has to be one of the best videos I have seen on UA-cam!
I just ordered a Z8 (upgrading from a D800) which hasn't arrived yet; and I'm in that phase of looking for reassurance that I've done the right thing so clicked on the link to this video.
I knew Leigh has been struggling with her back but was not expecting such a great video!
It is so good to hear that Leigh is on the mend and also lovely to see Raymond's emotion at the end. It is really heartwarming to see you prepared to show that to the world!
And I love the idea that the Z8 is not just a collection of specs and can't wait to get my hands on my own!

First of all, Wishing Leigh a quick recovery and hoping you guys click infinite number of photos together.
Great Review. I already own the Z8 and Z400mm f4.5. Switched from Sony A7iv & 200-600mm specially because of its complicated settings as said by you, simply like having separate Eye-AF mode selection for birds and animals. Most of the time I shoot mammals specially bigcats but when occasionally a bird pops up, the camera tends to miss the bird if its set to Animal Eye AF. Then you have to either jump to a different switch on the back to change to single point and move focus points and then click or go to Bird Eye AF via a few more button clicks and by that time birds vanished. And secondly the handling with big lenses. I don't like battery grips as we always carry extra battery anyway. The Z8 is just perfect with long lenses, balances great. Glad I made the switch again back to Nikon. I have shot over 2000 images with still battery at over 40% left. Really feels like good old D850 days.

Thanks for sharing such a lovely heartfelt review! After much research I just ordered the Z8, and I'm really looking forward to it. I purchased the Nikon D100 twenty-two years ago and I loved it. In 2013 I bought the highly rated D7100 which has also been a great camera for ten years now. This will be my first full frame mirror-less camera and will propel me completely back into the art and enjoyment of photography!

Thank you both. I traded my Z6 and Z7 for an 'ok' bite out of the cost of two Z8s. But this is what I was waiting for. Raymond, Thanks for a real user’s review. The timelapses are awesome. Thanks for NOT editing out your emotions. Leigh, I wish you a speedy recovery. Now you’ve got me on the horns of a dilemma. The Z8 is more camera than I need but my Z6 and Z50 are lacking in a number of areas. Do I wait for a z7iii or Z90 or get on with what is available? Rhetorical question. All the best to both of you from Canada.

Raymond, I'm glad I bought the Z9 before the Z8 came out. For me,less energy spent on a smallish purchase choice. The Z8 would have been fine for me if Nikon had released that first. They're both great but I need more time taking picture and less time spent balancing the Z8/Z9 scale. I loved your review. Your time-lapse was inspiring.

    • @pkennethv
      @pkennethv Рік тому

Same (ish). I'm really glad I have my Z9, even knowing the weight savings of the Z8...but I'm not sure I would have been able to justify the additional cost of the Z9 if the Z8 had been around at the time. If they were both available, I probably would have ended up with the Z8 but then be missing out on the various Z9 features I enjoy that the Z8 doesn't have (primarily the vertical grip & additional buttons)

Great review and images Leith and Raymond! The Z8 is the camera we wanted to see from Nikon, at a price point where a lot of people can get the Z9 tech in a smaller body. I would love to see some more features from Nikon on this camera, hopefully they got some pointers from the early users and are working on a firmware update to add them.

That time-lapse was gorgeous! I was lucky enough to do a test shoot with the Z8 and the Z9 side by side, and I have to admit that I appreciated the Z8 for being exactly in between the Z7II and the Z9 in terms of size. However, the performance was identical in my opinion for all intents and purposes, and the only reason why I am not considering the Z8 is due to the small price difference between the two in my region when the Z9 is on discount.

I have no doubt the Z8 is a hybrid shooters dream. I mostly take landscape images and family stuff. Nothing moving super fast. I don’t do video. For me, the smaller Z7ii and its lovely resolution and colours should be more than enough. Then why am I lusting after the Z8…why?

One of the first luck to receive on May 25. Love it, work great along with my Z9. In the past two weeks times just taking Z8 out to travel” light” others just the Z9. On a few walks both, on an event both. The Z8 on a strobe frame is more comfortable to handle than a Z9.
Both are a joy to work with. Before the Z8 I was using the D850 as second cam. Always nice but not as nice as the Z9, thought of second Z9, then May 10 the Z8 was announced. Perfect second cam, will perform the same can set up almost the same but has the benefit of being a smaller body. I have been saying , funny you referred to the Z9 as a sledge hammer🙂, that having the Z9 and Z8 is like having two hammers in your tool box. Both accomplish the same thing but each is best for different jobs.
Hope Leigh is feeling better and up and about soon.

  • @RichardBO9
    @RichardBO9 Рік тому

Wow! The footage is world class. I appreciate your vulnerability. After all of that, I feel a little cheap for asking technical questions, but, does the Z8 display the focus distance with the 24-120 lens, or are we still stuck somewhere between flower and mountain? Also, if you are shooting at apertures greater than F 5.6, do you have to stop the camera down to check focus? Great video. You keep getting better and better. Hope Leigh is doing well.
Update: After a LOT of looking at other gear over the last year, I purchased a Z8 and two lenses yesterday. This video was instrumental in that decision. Thanks for all you do.

I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to find this upload. A little emotional for my (British) liking but the best review of the Z8 that I have seen. I'm an amateur enthusiast with a d850 and 7 x F mount lenses (although 2 appear to be on permanent loan to my daughter lol) and I have been thinking about a change. I use a Q2 as my daily carry but I need something lighter than the d850 and lenses. I think you have convinced my to go with the Z8 with the FTZ. slowly, body first, then later a few choice lenses. I'll keep the d850 (I think) as you never get what they are worth, bodies or lenses.

Great video, Raymond. Your dreams sequence had me laughing out loud. And, I've said a Healing Prayer for Leigh. I've owned the D750, D850, Z6ii, Z7ii and now the Z9 and Z8. I traded the D850 for the Z9, primarily for it's quietness and higher frames rates, even though I really wanted something smaller,. I had planned to keep the Z7ii for hiking, travel and landscapes, but when I got the Z8 in my hands with its capabilities and only 1/2lb. heavier than the Z7ii, I realized that I could make it work as my second camera. I shoot lots of movement and the Z9 and Z8 with the better autofocus, no blackout when shooting bursts, instant on capabilities, and better video just works better and is more enjoyable to use for me. Truth is, the Z8 has now probably become my number one camera for its versatility. For heavy lifting, I have the Z9 and I also bought the battery grip for the Z8 (I had owned the battery grips for both the D850 and Z7ii for the long day, thousands of frames shooting movement that I often get involved in.).

Just don't try to shoot to the/a SD card it will bottleneck your work flow a ton. It will kill the buffer and the speed you can shoot at. If you only shot to a single CF Express you'll be fine with extra batteries in your bag or pocket. Its a great camera for those who don;t need super fast speed or a huge buffer when shooting to 2 cards. Its a great camera in our right just but not what I would consider a mini Z9 because of the SD card slot........ Great video. enjoyed. Yes any camera has its plus and minuses and bow you use it will dictate how your photos turn out. Great job with the video both of you.

When deciding on 'pulling the mirrorless trigger', battery life was the biggest reason I said "Pass" to the Z6 & Z7 and got the D870; the small in the hand size being the other. If I were making the same choice today, after this review and seeing what the Z8 is all about, it may have persuaded me to take the plunge. Well done!

I think this is the body that will take a lot of people from DSLR to mirrorless. :)

First, best wishes to Leigh for a speedy recovery. Thanks for your thoughts on the Z8. I ordered the Z8 (as an upgrade over my D850) as my first mirrorless because it seems to meet my one qualification for "fast" bird photography: I can get more in-focus shots. I learned from another site you can set a custom grid range and change the settings for more success. My test is always the same: in a bright sky can you focus on the eye of a dark bird flying by in the 500mm range?

So funny, for me, that I have a Canon Pellix and not once did the size come to mind because no one I knew was going on about camera size. I just used it, 50 plus years ago.
Also on battery life. How hard is it to change a battery, no were near as hard to change FILM for a whole 35 shots.

Just got my Z8 w 24-120mm and 200-500mm lenses the last Nikon was D600. Your comments where very moving on the Z8 comparison to Z9.
I will be going to GC in April. I have been many times. Liked your story on the time lapse effort and Navajo Point, I saw you had 16-30mm lens. Do you use it much beyond the vast grand canyou shot? Battery life issue makes sense.... I will learn to turn off this camera each time.

Firstly, I like to wish Leigh a speedy recovery, In Sya Allah.
Secondly, great review with the Z8 over the canyon. As an ex D850 shooter myself, this new body is a no brainer actually, just go get it! My only worry is when you overflow the CFexpress onto the SD card, that will go down hill a little

    • @LeighAndRaymond
      @LeighAndRaymond  Рік тому +1

Shooting to the SD card, as long as you have a fast one, is still very good. Where I notice a difference is in transferring the photos to the computer - the CFexpress is much quicker!

Z9 is too much of a brick for me - I just want all of its features in a Z6III. Guess time will tell. But the improved AF is a major element for me, plus quite a number of other improvements. Would have liked the GPS. Other than that I am hoping to take delivery of the Z8 next week !

I got the Z50, and the battery life didn't fit me... then I put 2 lithium 18650 under the bottom, with 3 tripod threads and an 8.4V connector ... Battery life is 3 times more and it fits much better for my big hands, ... I am never satisfied with a 300 photos battery life, because I need time for every picture to compose, and for wildlife, it is a pain in the AXX.. Regardless of what you do say...

First let me say I hope to see Leigh (fully recovered) in the next video. I am not saying that because I like Leigh video better, but instead I really like see you both in your video's. So as hobbyist photographer and long time Nikon user D7000, then the D7200 and now the Z50; I will not be buying the Z8 (little to rich for me). I mainly do all my photography while travelling (Z50 great travel camera), Family events and chasing the grandkids. I just turned 70, so carry a heavy camera bag with heavy gear is not fun. The issue with the Z50 is the battery life is awful and the AF is subpar. So a D500 replacement in a Z6II body with IBIS, E15c battery, similar AF to the Z8, would be great. One can only dream...are you listening Nikon.
