      Geri's delivery is so spot on and perfect. Milch's genius isn't just dialogue-it's finding the perfect actors for a role. Deadwood had perfect casting.

    This show was so well written. No show comes close to matching the vernacular and dialogue. This simply is a masterpiece. Al and Jewel shine here. Amazing actors.

    Al loved Jewel...as much as he was capable, and in his own fucked-up way.

    • @ered203

      There was speculation that Jewel was his sister, and that they both grew up in the orphanage. He made sure to take her with him when he left Chicago (I think it was Chicago). Of course this is just speculation, but I like to believe it.

      @@ered203 yes Al took Jewel under his wing and protected her when they were both young... Wow I never thought about her being his sister. That would explain why she was the only one will him when he dies and they were both singing the song from their childhood. Deadwood is genius.

      @@ered203 I don't believe this is true, Trixie brings up Jewel to Jane about Al buying Jewel as a discount prostitute, even though she knows it's a lie to deny he did it to protect her, it's clear that Al bought her. Also, Al's interactions really seem to suggest there's no sibiling relationship, from how he treats the con-artist siblings, or missing his mother who gave him to a pimp, to his memories of his brother, who Al misses openly and was also disabled, if Jewel were Al's sister, we'd know it.

  • @fetusthegreat9797
    @fetusthegreat9797 3 роки тому +34

    Al protected jewel in his own way and their relationship is one of if not the best in the show. The subtext of their interactions really show the man inside al rather than the monster pimp he shows to everyone else.

    Behind the rough exterior, I notice Al gingerly takes the bucket from Jewell showing he really does care about her. He's also covering up the fact that he's genuinely worried about Trixie and whether the 'snatch grab' pissed her off enough to not come back. I can visualize a younger Al and Jewell at the orphanage doing the same thing-scrubbing floors and Al helping out and covering for Jewell. Al knows everything that happens in Deadwood, I'm sure even the man who made fun of Jewell as she struggled down the muddy road to Doc's. The man (if he was lucky) probably woke up with several teeth missing along with a broken jaw. While merciless, Al had this rare soft side that was beautiful the few times we saw it.

    Al Swearengen is my all time favorite character. Because he's extremely brave, tough, and fearless of his enemies. But most of all, he's extremely intelligent. Yet, when he grabs a woman's snatch purely out of anger, and squeezes it to hurt her, he doesn't already know beforehand, that she's likely gonna be mad about it afterwards. Lol.

    • @tomservo5347
      @tomservo5347 Рік тому +4

      It's Al being genuinely worried over Trixie because they were lovers. This is something alien to Al who'd never admit that he does actually have feelings for other people. It's hilarious because it's Al tiptoeing around his feelings and so he desperately questions Jewell as he'd only do because it's his sister. (While he's actually helping her on his hands and knees-a show of affection in Al's weird, twisted way while he berates her. It's also showing how Trixie has brought THE Al Swearingen to his knees inwardly.)

      I love both characters but it wouldn't work. They'd be able to collaborate on a situational basis because of their "code", but Omar would be abrasive to the type of relationship Al would want to have with him. Al would try setting guidelines for Omar to operate within and he'd mess with Al just for trying to tell him what to do. Al would be abrasive to Omar not "bending the knee". They would almost certainly view each other as threats.

    Jewel is my favorite character after Al and the Doc. My mom has lived her life with a similar brain injury to her character, and has similar physical issues but my mom's are far worse. One eye, wayyyy worse pimp (i wrote limp but that's a fun error contextually so let's leave it 😂), and the equivalent of a limp but arm/wrist/hand version.
    Jewel having healthy smart children is a less crazy thought than my mom having done so. I admire Jewel's always positive attitude despite being ridiculed.

    I never watched this series but now I've seen a few clips. I can't help but notice it's chock full of obscenities. I wonder, did they swear that much in the old west, and did they use the same terminology that we do today?

    • @Woesteinvuir
      @Woesteinvuir 2 роки тому +1

      Yes to the first, but no to the second. The West, especially in the form of mining camps, was a extremely vulgar place, but the vulgarities were usually religious blasphemy - lots of "Damns" or "Hells" instead of Deadwood's dialogue. David Milch deliberately modernised the swearing while maintaining the rather florid prise style of the time to capture the sense of what the West's language would have felt like, rather than the literal truth of how it was.
      I just finished the series the other day by the by, and I cannot recommend it enough. Handily become my favourite TV show of all time.
