  • This manga is called "yotsuba to". This roughly means "with yotsuba", but it's also translated as "yotsuba and". I try to read the manga for you guys and explain the different grammar and vocabulary parts that we read through. I recommend you to check out the full Japanese basics for beginners course that I have on my channel, so that you know when I reference anything about the lessons. I hope reading mangas like this is helpful for you. This is intended as an exercise for beginner language learners. I am still studying as well, so if I did a mistake, please feel free to correct me in the comments. Thanks for watching!

You are definitely NOT reading too much into it!! You addressed all the questions I had actually, like the differences between formal and informal speech, the countryside accents, the "abrupt end" using tsu at the end... And you translated everything so well I didn't get lost once!! Thank you so much for this video and I really hope you make more of these!!
I am now heavily considering buying this manga and writing down some notes with the things you said (with a pencil ofc, I wouldn't want to ruin it) so I can learn more easily hehe

17:52「そういや」isn't a dialectical form of 「そうだ」here, it's a casual form of 「そう言えば」, which means "now that you mention it", or literally something like "if that is being said".

Btw. The ...-chan and ...-kun usually are used for females and males respectively. But -chan can be used for people that are close to you and -kun can be used for people that are not as much or not at all. In that case -chan can be used for males like Otou-chan (like in 11:10) and -kun can be used for females like Lisa-kun (like in a very professional setting, such as a boss to their employ (however it can come of as a little rude))
-san is a more gender nature and polite appelitation.
I know nobody asked but. Here you go

@@GaijinQuest Loved it! Great job on this episode! The edits were super helpful with explaining some of the nuances we haven't looked at yet too. Some people may find the slow pacing boring, but it really helped me understand every grammar point in the fist few pages. I looked into the pdf version and tried to read ahead a bit too, but I was completely lost when the adults began speaking to one another. So personally, I'd love to see an episode on it! I'd imagine that those are imperative to understanding the whole story and getting the full experience from the manga as well.
I was also curious if you had a discord or have ever thought about making one. We wouldn't want to eat up too much of your time answering additional questions on there, I just think it would be a cool place where students/enthusiasts could speak to one another about what we've learned so far and have elementary conversations with one another for practice. Once again, thanks so much! I'm telling all of my classmates and teachers about your channel and the amazing work you've done so far! Can't wait to see more from you!

Why didn't I think about something like that :D I'll make one asap. Also I will try to upload episodes where we read yotsubato regularly. (once a week for example). The part of the adults talking is rather short and after that it's a lot of yotsuba and another teenage girl talking, which is understandable for beginners as well! I really appreciate this video. I have been looking for something exactly like this for days. I have just started learning Japanese a few weeks ago. I need something to sort of watch and/or listen to that tells a story but also explains in English exactly like this, that is easy going, simple (however difficult enough for a beginner)...just this!! Exactly this. My instructor told me to avoid anime because they are teaching me to be polite and modern. So the fact that you are advising what language is acceptable and what isn't is a big deal to me because it gives me both worlds and doesn't go against my instructor's wishes. Also, you are taking your time here. I hope you do more videos of explaining stories, exactly how you have done this one.

      @@GaijinQuest Awesome.
My instructor suggested podcasts and sites like HelloTalk and to avoid kid shows and anime. I see his point however for now, podcasts are just noise at this point except for a couple of words and at least with a kid show, I can still learn how to say the colour pink. I have found a show on Netflix called Samarai Cuisine. I turn off all of the English, turn on Japanese subtitles and I am getting quite a bit out of that because I can watch the story and see what is going on. There is a lot of passion for food in the show and the character is a likeable adult who is funny, in a charming way. So somehow I am understanding quite a bit. I can't tell if the show is great to a native speaker but it is great for someone like me.
Anyways, this particular series of yours feels like a bridge to where I need to be going. This story will probably last me a while but I hope you find another one that compells you to repeat the process. It needs to be fun for you too, right? Please consider it. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. This is great. I bought the first 2 books. But I am finding it difficult to see the script when I try to read it. I guess the printing is small to save space??
But reading it with you helps a bit more. I can see this i going to take very long. But It’s interesting that I recently bought it in Japan when I was there recently. I got an English Translation for Book 1 here in Canada to get me to the gist of the story. Then I can practice with Japanese understanding the meaning.

Really? Yotsuba is one of my favorite 👏👏
And in theory there's not suppose to be any problem with the copyright.
But if there will be than just zoom on the individual panels. Comic dub readers often do that and it works for them.

I think the hardest part about Japanese is not the Kanji (because of Furigana) or pronouncing it, or Kana, but I think it’s actually translating it into your language, for me it’s English, I don’t have troubles saying/knowing what it sounds like, but I have troubles translating it to english

    • @NightFox3D
      @NightFox3D 6 місяців тому +1

I know it's been a long time since you've posted this, but if you happen to see this or anyone else, there's a whole study and several videos out there about just that. When learning any language you do not want to tranlate anything to your native language. I know this sounds really odd, but it's one of the top mistakes most people make. What you wanna do is learn the language much like a baby, you'll have to associate everything to the new words. It doesn't hurt to know translation, but you should try to learn to associate words you learn to thoughts and objects, than your native language. The less you involve your native language the better. I think it's more than okay to start off using your native language to find your footing faster and learn basics, but I'd recommend phasing out use of your native language after the first 1-2 weeks. There are several language programs out there, that refuse to introduce you in anyway shape or form using your native language.
