    How you sleep with no air mat is beyond me fella. I slept using only my thermarest z-lite sol mat last week. I was a broken man in the morning!

      Sleeping on the foam mat isn't for everyone. And I guarantee the first time will be a horrendous experience. But I always tell people to stick with it for a few camps because you do need to adjust to it. Nowadays I sleep absolutely fine, wake up feeling fresh and rested. I used to get back ache with my inflatable pads, but not so with the foam.
      Many thanks for checking out the video and commenting 👍

    A good challenge. Only in this warm spell though, it can still get chilly. I prefer to loose the shelter and use only a nice warm sleeping bag. I must try the candles.
    I think the first video I saw if yours was the one with the cows. I've enjoyed watching since. Thanks for sharing. Steve

      Hi Steve, good to hear from you, hope you're well. Yeah I do like to test myself by going a bit more minimalist, will probably just go with the bivvy next time or keep a fire going through the night.
      I was quite impressed with the citronella candles. I had one bite on my wrist, but not bad considering I didn't use any other form of insect repellent or netting 👍

    That UCO tea light lantern is the go, so much cheaper to use and there's the larger 8 hour candles that go perfect in there.

    Even my Italian missis calls it a 'picky tea' 🤣. I too often wonder why we even bother with cookware etc in the summer. A sarnie or a cold pasty saves so much weight and hassle... but you took it proper Waitrose!
    That looked like a very attractive and comfortable long day camp setup to me personally Barney - but then I'm not one for suffering needlessly! I once again hugely admire your drive to live on the edge of comfort now and again, whilst also thinking you're a bit nuts. It makes for a different vid from the herd anyway! But I'd rather see you relaxed, warm, and cosy myself. We aren't getting any younger and life has enough challenges without cutting our nose off to spite our face when doing the one thing that is supposed to make us relax! Just my take on it mate... but then to most people all wild camping is 'roughing it' eh? All relative.
    And I agree, the buzz from your first overnighter in a new and secret spot is what it's all about. All the very best mate and thanks for sharing. Rich. 👍

    • @barneysbimbles
      @barneysbimbles  3 місяці тому

      Hi Rich, hope you're well. Some great comments there. Gotta love a picky tea, Waitrose is well above my pay grade. But sometimes my wife and I get ideas above our station and we do like to treat ourselves!
      As for the camp, I do from time to time get a bit of enjoyment from stepping out of the comfort zone and also mixing things up a bit for the channel. I guess it slots into that 'type 2 fun' category. My July camp will almost certainly be a more comfortable experience. But I shall undoubtedly re-visit this more minimalist style of camp again in the future albeit with some lessons learnt from this experience.
      Age does come into it though doesn't it. Years of football and messing around on motocross bikes has knackered my knees and I've already noticed myself making involuntary groans when I get up from a seated position. There will come a time in the not too distant future when those more comfortable camps will be a necessity!
      Thanks as always for checking out the video Rich, much appreciated 👍

    Nice camp, don't think I could rock a ground pad only. I think I've binged all of your videos and have not seen you use a hammock, have you ever tried one . I'm hooked on hammocks and trying to find a way to use one at home, don't think my better half would approve is only thing holding me back. Keep up the good work and I plan on giving to your charity when I can figure out how to send overseas payment. Cheers

    • @barneysbimbles
      @barneysbimbles  3 місяці тому

      Hi Mike, I used to hammock camp all the time when I started out wild camping. It is quite nice to wake up in the woods in a hammock. I have at least one hammock video on my channel from late 2020 which would have been the last time that I slept in one. I fell out of love with it if I'm honest, I had a decent hammock setup, but just got a bit fed up of having to fine tune the setup every time so that I could get the perfect lay! I found myself favouring the simplicity of ground dwelling. I might revisit hammocks in the future though, never say never!
      Thanks as always for watching and commenting on the video though, glad you enjoyed it. Just by clicking on the video is helping to raise money for charity. But the justgiving page that I linked in the description does also accept international payments and I've had a couple of donations from American subscribers. I will also post the stickers internationally 👍

    I have had it on great authority from my Mum and Mamgu (Welsh), that my Gramps in his younger years floored a cow with one punch.

    Nice one Barney . Enjoyed that mate.Know what you mean about having to do the family thing.
    Not sure about those citronella candles , seem to work sometimes and not others 🤔
    Was a minimal setup bud., glad you made it through the night reasonably OK mate .

      Cheers Mark, it's always good fun experimenting with different setups and whatnot.
      I've actually been quite impressed with the citronella candles. I've used them for a couple of 'buggy' camps now, I've not used any other form of insect repellent and have faired pretty well. All I did was ensure that the lantern was relatively close to the head end of my shelter. I just picked up one bite on this camp which is a lot better than normal!
      Yep that was the Helikon Bergen. It's a nice Daypack which I've used for the occasional wild camp. I really like the organisation, but it's quite small, approx 22litres all in. It has some useful points in which you can strap a Bedroll or similar. Usual Helikon build quality 👍

      Cheers Dave, I had half a mat, so wasn't too bad!
      I get a few comments from folks saying that they couldn't sleep on the thin foam mats. It took me a few camps to adjust, but generally sleep pretty well. Strangely I used to wake with back ache quite regularly after using my Exped inflatable pad. Not so with the foam mats! 👍
