  • At only 6 months old, Morea Cummings was diagnosed with congenital Nephrotic Syndrome through a kidney biopsy. After many medication adjustments and multiple albumin infusions when she was still just a baby, she showed some improvement and the scarring of her kidneys slowed. However, none of the medications could completely stop the protein spillage, and her kidneys continued to scar. After a gradual decline, Morea went into kidney failure at 5 years old.
Within a few months, she started peritoneal dialysis - but due to dangerously high blood pressure, Morea soon needed a double nephrectomy, a procedure in which both kidneys are removed. After a full year on dialysis (and a full year without either kidney), Morea received a new kidney at the age of 6.
Despite all the health challenges she faced in just the first few years of her life, Morea is now a healthy 11-year-old in 6th grade. She loves nature, swimming, taking competitive dance classes, spending time with friends, and playing with her little brother.
