Retracing WW2 history in East Timor 🇹🇱 Riding Timor's terrible roads Ep16 RTW
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 вер 2022
- Before setting off North and Left a bit ;) we did a little loop around some interesting sights in East Timor, connections to WW2 and today. the roads in East Timor are TERRIBLE and that makes then wonderful if you're on a capable adventure bike like the DR650. Unsealed and bumpy, almost technical in parts, then the nicest sweeping turns you've ever ridden.
Thanks again, as always, to our Patrons, if you'd like to join them, for early access and extras content, here's the way: / ridingoneggshells
And Harry darling as your mum, I can't help but observe how nice all these people are from their comments. They seem thoughtful and encouraging and well . . . . your friends (including Liss of course).
Hey Harry,
It must warmm your heart to have the opportunity to follow in your Grandfather's footsteps to retrace his wartime experiences.
What a fascinating story (so far) of bravery, determination and survival.
We can only imagine the horrific conditions that they all had to deal with. The locals were an integral part of their ability to get out alive.
Amazing.
Thank you for sharing a small piece of your family history.
Thank you Peter and Karin! Yeah it is so interesting. We are still deciding whether to go and tell the next part of it in Borneo, given I have very little information about what he did after this because it all becomes super secret. -H
rip granddad knowing your grandson is keeping your memory alive
Thanks for the entertainment guys, love how you manage to film the tiffs and put them in the video, keepin it real 👌
Incredible story telling Harry - got me feeling proud and emotional 😅
Wonderful story! There were many heroic actions that are unrecorded from WWII.
Your granddad sounds like an amazing guy! I absolutely loved this episode!😁
Excellent narrative about your Grandfather. And general riding in Timor. Different and interesting Vlog, well done.
i was ride the motor bike my self long ago racing with my dad on that road was fun u make my memory come back make me miss my time with dad thanks fo the beautiful video
Great story, so cool !
And you look so like your grandad !
Great bit of history and well delivered, fantastic!
Nothing better then a great days ride and a great story. Thanks for sharing that with us. 👊
Harry that was so great. The way you tell that story is fantastic. I served in the Royal Signals for 23 years and have been on so many mountain tops around the world with a radio and not much else, fortunately I never had hundreds of angry Japanese hunting me. You Granddad sounds like a proper legend and it is absolutely clear how much you love him. Well done mate and keep that enthusiasm going even when Lis blames you for knocking her off! LOL Love your journey so far and really look forward to more adventures and tails of daring.
Oh that's useful you'll be able to tell me. Can enemies trilaterate your position, if you're beep beeping some Morse code out? I was going to say that using his radio started a clock, essentially setting the Japanese on his scent, but then I wasn't sure that's true? -H
@@RidingOnEggshells, I'm not sure how developed the DF (direction finding) capabilities back then were but they would now. One of my jobs while in the green machine was electronic warfare and that's exactly what we did.
More stories like that please. Better than just riding footage. Well done 👏
That was the MOST TREMENDOUS story I’ve ever witnessed on UA-cam. It was real. God Bless your grandfather for his volunteer service, extra points for lying about his underage. Ya knocked this one out of the park! Harry & Liss are on their bikes and vloging again, all is right again on our 🌎.
Ah thanks Bradley that is really kind of you to say. Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely the best episode ever !!!!!! Thank you both
Such a good episode and edit of all those locations, keeping it honest with the bad tempers and falling outs ( and the reconciliations) are the bits that make it relatable. I would guess that it has been said but Harry looks uncannily like his grandfather. Really looking forward to future videos
Really loved your grandads story, it really brings to life the history of Timor, you should be very proud of his service
Liss, don't let him get away with a simple sorry make it work for you.
Thanks for sharing your G dad’s story was awesome and presented with passion and excitement 👏
A fascinating story about your granddad and the commandos.
Hi there loved you vids on Timor I read a book about your grandfather and his mates called The men who came out of the ground. It’s a really interesting storey
Love your personal history in the area. Thanks again for sharing your journey with us! Cheers!
Your grandfather wrote a fascinating account of the beaching of Voyager for some sort of naval Gazette in the early 1980s. With your and Liss’s fabulous sleuthing skills you should be able to find this. It makes brilliant reading, much as your account is to camera. Well done putting it all together for us all ❤ so succinctly.
If all history lessons were like this I'd have studied history! 😊
Absolutely fascinating story and what a privilege to walk in your heroic grandfathers footsteps all this time later, thanks for sharing!!
Wow. I can only imagine what your grandfather and the other men endured. It’s amazing you were able to visit those locations.
Whoa, LOVED the story of Grandad. Amazing 👏👏🇦🇺🇦🇺👏👏
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
Great to hear the story of your grandfather! What a wild ride that must have been. Wow.
Also.. I literally said “OH NO!” When you flew the drone through those power lines 😅
Another great video. Highs lows ups downs and Grandad. Upvoted!
What fun, and such a nice tribute to your grandfather
What an incredible story, and an incredible (pooping) grandad... and I utterly loved your enthusiasm in telling it... you are very good at that, very much enjoyed, to the point of gripping my seat at points while you told it! 🙂
Nice adventure
Absolutely fascinating story about your grandfather! I love these sorts of WWII stories. So inspiring. Thanks for sharing and ride safe!
Great episode guys, your grand dads story is incredible Harry, it must have been terrifying knowing your number could be up at any tick of the clock.
Yeah definitely Mick. Apparently there were hearing the dogs the Japanese were using to hunt them, barking in the mangrove the night before the extraction. I think maybe some of it was knowing they couldn't track them that deep into the mangrove, some of it maybe was just stress exhaustion. -H
Really enjoyed your enthusiastic telling of your Grandad’s story. Great that you could visit the places he had been.
Thanks Simon! Yes it was quite cool. I would really like to find the proper spot for the evacuation but we didn't want to leave our bikes and wade through 10kms of croccy Mangrove. -H
From what I was told my grandad was stationed in the same area at the same time. We never spoke, I never heard his voice, but he was a shell of a man. Whatever he saw or did messed him up. I was 11 when he passed.
The best episode ever!
Nice how you turned the focus back on to your story H. I've read of Sparrow force and it's local friends but you personalized (and maybe a little dramatized 😊it) well.
Thanks again. Don't rush, insights into that part of the world are still rare.
An excellent story teller harry (almost as good as your riding!). Thanks for a brilliant episode.
Simon
Hahah thanks Simon, I think!
WOW just WOW thanks for your Grandads story and for the history lesson 😮👍
words fail me 😥🤔
keep well you 2 😎🍺
Thanks Jeff yeah it was really interesting learning it. Just regret not learning it from Grandad. -H
@@RidingOnEggshells Its sad that we learn the most when its to late to appreciate it 😥😥
@@jefftaswelder9154 Yeah I so feel that way about both my grandad and my dad, and my uncle. Gotta go round hoovering up the stories of those in my life! -H
You guys!! 😂😂. That had a serious slant to it , that argument! I was getting anxious.
Great wartime info. Fantastic!
Loved hearing your grandfathers story. It's amazing the stories some of the diggers bought back. Keen to hear more of his story.
My great grandfather fought in Tobruk and the Kokoda trail. Can't imagine the things he must have gone through.
Harry you must be so proud of you grandather..he was a true hero. It's not always about bikes. You have to love history to. Respect. Great episode. 👍
Good story and video Keep it up Aussie Aussie Aussie 👍
Great story Harry
It was a really good episode, realy enjoyed it. The older generation had balls. Greetings again from South Africa
Great story about your Grandfather Harry! You can see the resemblance in the picture. Sounds like someone should make a movie about those heroes. P.S. any croc footage is always appreciated.
Terima kasih banyak 🙏
Yet another great episode.
Your granddad and the gang are true legend....Amazing story telling there Harry and not so amazing that you knocked Liss over...thanks for keeping honest...
PS local food consumed during the adventure should be in the recording 👍😎
Thank you Syed yes that's useful feedback we'll have more about local food as we go on. Terima kasih atas sarannya.
@@RidingOnEggshells hi guys just watch crossing the borders the fish wrap in palm leaf looks delicious 👏👏
Bummer about the helmet, mirror and the akubra hat...that's adventure ahead.

Lovely story. Though I doubt you Grandad would use that word. Give us more please.
Thanks man, for that wonderful story about your granddad. Really enjoyed it a lot, keep on keeping on you both!
Such and interesting quest to walk where your ancestors went before you. A great ep. including a few traditional drops.
Keep it up guys, its all about the adventure.....
Good stuff Harry, love the history in this one well done.
Great Video, loved your Grandfather's story.Brave young men.👍
Yes weren't they exactly that. I think many men of later generations just wonder how we'd respond to that kind of adversity.
So happy you take your bikes again and we can enjoy your adventures 😊 Greatings from Bulgaria
Thank you Borislav!
Fantastic story telling. Thank you for sharing
Love the history of your granddad. Those guys had some in balls.
So grandfather was original Rambo..😎💪
Fascinating story Harry. Good to see you guys on the move again! :-) XXX
Thank you Simon!
Loved this, sorry for my comments on your choices, it makes sense now, you should have given a heads up on, why you choose Timor! Looking forward to the next one, enjoy the trip!
All good Jørn! It was frustrating for us too, given how much going to Timor slowed us down. But goodness I love Timor and am so glad I went. -H

Thank you Bender!

Bravo Zulu Sparrow force,, very very very brave men
How is the quality of the fuel, and availability ? The history reporting on the actions of the Independent Companies in Timor is an inspiring read, they were amazingly resilient, adaptable, and bloody heroic. Whilst not occupying a strategic position later in the overall war they were very active in causing the Japanese to have to send a lot of troops to Timor to try to stop the actions of the Australians, troops they could very much have used in the actions in the Phillipines. Huge respect to the men of the Independent Companies.
Ah goodness my comment got deleted trying to wipe sweat off my screen.
Yes it's so fascinating. I know it's a fool's game to play alternate history, and I can't help but try. If those 12000 Japanese weren't so tied up, would Darwin be rubble? Could they have invaded mainland Australia? Could they have applied so much pressure to the Pacific theatre, that allied troops were brought over and the Germans succeeded in the west? I don't know nearly enough about history to even guess intelligently. -H
The fuel, at least for the DRs is fine. I've not noticed any significant drop in performance, but I've not really tracked mileage. Though come to think of it, now in Indonesia (with the same fuel) Liss' bikes is definitely backfiring more... -H
You need to look at your helmet mic position and protection. At speed it isn’t good. I’ve had similar problems.
Yeah I have actually abandoned in-helmet mic altogether. It is hit and miss, in that sometimes it doesn't plug in all the way, makes the camera susceptible to water ingress, and goes through lav mics from cord damage and moisture. I may start using them again but this has been the first video in almost a year that we've wanted sound from one moving at speed so I think I may leave it that way. Thanks for the feedback though!
Hence the reason they are know as the greatest generation.
Aint that the truth.
Fishermen could use the motors of the DR 650 as anchors !!!
He could use it as a hook to go fishing for trolls ;)
@@RidingOnEggshellsIgnore her/him. He has fake videos on his channel.
Liss honey give it up with that grey t shirt it’s well passed it’s sell by date
It all looks too hard
I think the clapped out roads will be too much for the clapped out bikes !!!
Coming from an expert on "clapped out"...
Would do a swap with fishermen- swap the bikes for a ride in a boat back to australia !!!
