John wanted Kenny at his beck and call, but didn't want to pay for Kenny to be on call. Kenny has mentioned this many times in interviews. This was awesome performance. I saw this when it came out.
I was there !! I won 2 tickets for this private party & MTV recording. He played the whole album twice !! I got to dance with the chick back up singers. I bought a disposable camera but never figured how to use it lol. He also sat down and talked to us between songs. I may not agree with his politics but he a a great guy !!!!

No kick on other generations we all have our voices and ways of projecting them but so damn glad this music from my generation time period and neck of the woods thank u John ❤😊
I bought this CD when I was 18! Here in Italy the single Human Wheels was playing at the radio and the video was on MTV. What a nice album, reminds me the good old times!
John's music never sounded as good live after this version of his band split. They were such a tight band!Kenny's beating on those drums like they owe him money! Lol. Love this concert
Amazed at the lack of view figures on this, what a catalogue this guy has and i just love the energy of his band, drums and the ladies really add hard to the show, saw them llive and it was awesome.
He's Incredible #Live - Met him late 70's ,early 80's... Really wasn't done with the night 😁😉 He was Johnny Cougar- *he hated the Cougar, too. Wish he'd quit those Marlboro's ... Could be why he sounds like he does. Chainsmoker- on stage, off stage...Only one place he didn't. We were both young; though he was older. Helluva Performer & an #artist !! Enjoy Mr. J.M. ♡x
Simply brilliant! Excellent picture quality and sound. 'Human Wheels' was and still is a very under rated offering from John Mellencamp. The concert here features a kick-ass band at the top of its game performing some great songs. Sadly missing the amazing John Cascella who died 10 months prior to this outstanding performance. lucky Chicago. Highly recommended. Thanks for posting this absolute gem.
Mercury Records really didn't care much for the album as they thought it was quite lacking in commercial potential. Therefore, _Human Wheels_ received anemic marketing and promotional support from the label.
I was a young man when this was a current release and although i was not a huge Mellancamp fan i enjoyed as everyone from my generation the offerings from Scarecrow / The Lonesome Jubilee at the time that where still played on the radio and its a pity that this whole album did not get the airplay of its predecessors. Retrospectively speaking this is a stand out and I now have a whole different appreciation to John Mellancamps music and his tenacious will to keep on producing music for himself.
Man, they made Junior much heavier Live! To this day, I can't hear the Title Track of Human Wheels without crying. "While I, with human-hindered eyes/Unequal to the sweeping curve of life/Stand on this single print of time". Thanks for the music and most importantly a glimpse of your heart, JCM
Torrance Ron , I'm glad I found this! I've grown to appreciate Johns work more & more lately. His new stuff is great (Plain Spoken, Sad Clowns & Hillbillies). Since the death of Tom Petty, I've really come to respect the great ones we have left. John being among them.
Man, this is absolutely awesome! I've heard John say in interviews that he really hated his 90's music. He must have forgotten about this material. What is it, 23 studio albums by 2018? I understand if some of it has slipped from memory. Not my memory, though.

Obviously some are people’s phones so don’t judge them on them And while I’m at it Check out a Band called Rumors the Fleetwood Mac Tribute honestly they too look and sounds so good it’s like going back in a DeLoren
Love this guy.look at him rickin with the smoke. At least he gave it up when he had that heart attack and gave us plenty more music. I will say he did a nice transition from the 80's to the 90's
What an eerily coincidental date on which to perform an album titled "Human Wheels." If I had to put together a montage of historical footage set to the song "Human Wheels," it would most certainly include footage of the WTC attacks on 9/11/2001.
One of the best live productions ever. David Grissom is the best Guitarist of the 21 century whether you(JOHN PUBLIC) think so or not. Mellencougar is a fool for letting him slip away. Oh well....HE"S(David is) A TEXAN NOW! And JOHN can still ROCK....YEAH!!!

The reason this sounds so damn good...and i'm not cutting anything down by saying this, it is because Human Wheels was released 4 days prior on September 7th, 1993 so the band is fresh out of the recording studio and are tuned to the T. Not only that but the soundman is probably using the latest technology to record this with Alesis ADAT XT's or HD24's collecting 16 bit audio.
The reason it sounds so good is that John has had the BEST live band on tour for nearly his entire career. You could put anyone on stage in any other band and that band would be better.
Note to self: never EVER fire the drummer who helped create your signature sound. Just pay the man.
Totally agree! Kenny's a fucking beast..
Trying to think of the country artist he hooked up with.Gary Morris?
He didn't fire Kenny. The guy went off to a lucrative career as an in-demand session guy.
John wanted Kenny at his beck and call, but didn't want to pay for Kenny to be on call. Kenny has mentioned this many times in interviews.
This was awesome performance. I saw this when it came out.
I have to say I' feel so fortunate to have Mellencamps music in my generation to enjoy ,, Buddy your a blessing ,, Thank You ,,, 🙏 Peace
This is one of the best street concerts ever, and this album is as good today, or maybe better than it was in 1993 - RR

Wonderful!!!
Excellent performance. A new album being introduced, and the crowd was into it with no knuckleheads present. 30 years ago, real music ruled. This was a great band John had during this period. David Grissom and Kenny Aronoff are just excellent and the core of the band. And Lisa Germano, Pat Peterson and Roberta Freeman really make the whole band complete. You can't underestimate what they brought to this concert, both musically and visually. Especially Lisa Germano, who is a very underrated talent on her own. She added a lot to this band, and I'm glad to see she is touring with his band again for the current tour.

Saw the wherever we wanted tour in Brisbane Australia in 93... David Grissoms guitar playing blew me away.

David Grissom doing work on lead guitar,and Kenny is a beast. This tour was excellent
David Grissom is one of the best guitarists most people have never heard of.
They didn't don't tour this album.This was the only show in support of human wheels
Saw him in New Orleans this tear 2023 second time in my life I've always loved me some Jonh Mellencamp.
A "Goosebumps" version of this song if there ever was one . It gets me every time . I love Kenny Aronoffs drumming on this !
My fav album. Christ, the live performance is even better than the record...incredible

This is REAL Rock´n Roll......John "Cougar" Mellencamp is just America´s best.....still hope to see him live in concert once in my life......
Great band, great show. Lisa Germano adds so much to the sound... and the visuals. Dave Grissom sounds amazing as usual.
Birmingham still crackles with life 30+ years on. When you play that in the car it just pops, sounds like it was recorded yesterday
Watched this when it originally aired and loved it, love it even more today!
the playing by everyone in the band here is absolutely top notch
Love the comments and the appreciation and love for John and his great band. Stellar performance! Bravo!
Si que es buena si
His last truly great album, with the best iteration of his band ever. Dave Grisson brought a fantastic new sound to JM's music.
He did with Whenever We Wanted 2 years earlier, too. Gave the songs some beef, so to speak.

Funny I just told my Son the exact same thing a few days ago! Watched it in 93 on MTV and recorded it to a Metal Tape and a DAT
I've always said that. After Aronoff left, his band never sounded the same.
I'd have to agree.
I'd have to agree too
It’s just a guess but I don’t believe the drums owed money to Kenny.
20 years ago I bought the bootleg in a store in NYC. It was produced in Hamburg/Ger where I came from.

10:09 Human Wheels
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This land today, shall draw its last breath
And take into its ancient depths
This frail reminder of its giant, dreaming self
While I, with human-hindered eyes
Unequal to the sweeping curve of life
Stand on this single print of time
Human wheels spin round and round
While the clock keeps the pace
Human wheels spin round and round
Help the light to my face
This time, today, no triumph gains
At this short success of age
This pale reflection of its brave and
Blundering deed
For I, descend from this vault
Now dreams beyond my earthly fault
Knowledge, sure, from the seed
Human wheels spin round and round
While the clock keeps the pace
Human wheels spin round and round
Help the light to my face
This land, today, my tears shall taste
And take into its dark embrace
This love, who in my beating heart endures
Assured, by every sun that burns
The dust to which this flesh shall return
It is the ancient, dreaming dust of God
Human wheels spin round and round
While the clock keeps the pace
Human wheels spin round and round
Help the light to my face
Human wheels spin round and round
While the clock keeps the pace
Human wheels spin round and round
Help the light to my face
~~~~~~~
They call me Junior
I live here on the street
I earn two hundred dollars a week
I'd like to say
"Hey, thanks a lot."
I know I'm missin' something
But I don't know what it is
That I don't got
I sit here watchin'
The people down below
I try to imagine
The places they may go
I don't know
I stay home a lot
I know I'm missin' something
But I don't know what it is
That I don't got
I see the world through the TV Guide
What a safe place for me to run
What a small little man I am
I'm afraid of everything
From golden rules to airplanes
What a small little man I am
They call me Junior
I'm caught up in this hell
Sometimes I feel better
But I never do feel well
Jesus must have one hell of a plan for me
I know I'm missin' something
But I don't know what it is
That I don't got
And if I have anything to say
About judgment day
There'll be a crown in heaven
For those who live this way
Anyway
You know exactly who you are
I see the world through the TV Guide
What a safe place for me to run
What a small little man I am
I'm afraid of everything
From the golden rule to airplanes
What a small little man I am
They call me Junior
I live here on the street

19:52 Suzanne and the Jewels
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Suzanne was the jewel keeper
In a word she stole all the jewels
And she took them to a foreign land
Which was strictly against all the rules
And she wore them all proudly
Like a tiara crown on her head
And she slept with them at night
Suzanne and the jewels in a bed
Suzanne and her jewels
Livin' on the edge of a friend
Suzanne, how will you sleep at night
When they take that crown from your head?
Suzanne lived down by the river
The fountain of youth did flow
And she played on a steel guitar
And the drifters did come and they'd go
And she'd put on her crown
And she'd sing them a song
And some drifters would stay here the night
But they never did stay long
Suzanne and her jewels
Livin' on the edge of a friend
Suzanne, how will you sleep at night
When they take that crown from your head?
This girl flew on the wind
She wrote her own name in the stars
Just goes to show sometimes you win
No matter how crazy you are
But a thief can come knocking
Even with blood on the door
And drink up your fountain of youth
Throw your jewels and your crown on the floor
Suzanne and her jewels
Livin' on the edge of a friend
Suzanne, how will you sleep at night
When they take that crown from your head?
Suzanne and her jewels
Livin' on the edge of a friend
Suzanne, how will you sleep at night
When they take that crown off your head?
25:30 Sweet evening breeze
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was loud and a little sad
She was visiting from Atlanta, Georgia
She had come to spend the summer with her dad
And I thought she was very pretty
We would kiss and hold hands
Every night by the football field
Her body was tan
From the afternoons by the public swimming pool
Sweet evening breeze
Blows around my thoughts and memories
As I lie here today
And drink my tea
I can still see
Sweet evening breeze
I saw her in a coffee shop
In a big hotel down in Austin, Texas
She had cut her long hair off
And replaced it with
Blue eyes of sadness
Still acted like we were kids
And she told me that she had to marry
And she asked me if I did
Still remember
The sweet evening breeze
Blows around my thoughts and memories
As I lie here today
And drink my tea
I can still see
Sweet evening breeze
How redundant the future can be
These days of old are very, very
Ridiculous for me to see
When I think about the real gone stories
How time holds the winning hand
I can tell by the lines on our faces
How the young can't understand
When they look at me
They look at themselves
Oh, sweet evening breeze
Blows around my thoughts and memories
As I lie here today
And drink my tea
I can still see
Sweet evening breeze
30:34 To the River
~~~~~~~~~~~~
They are master and slave
We are sunlight and shadow
All roads to the river
I am lost, I am saved
I'm beloved and betrayed
All roads to the river
And the river runs wide
And the river runs deep
And I spit in the eye of safe company
When I dive right down to the undertow
Well, the deeper I drown
Lord, the higher I'll go
I am whispering dreams
I am howling revolutions
All roads to the river
I am valentine sweet
And I live in this nightmare
All roads to the river
And the river runs wide
And the river runs deep (Runs Deep)
And I spit in the eye of safe company
When I dive right down (Right down)
To the undertow (Undertow)
Well, the deeper I drown
Lord, the higher I'll go
This is nothing like we planned
That's the way it's always been
All roads to the river
I have hated and I have loved
I have prayed and I have sinned
All roads to the river
And the river runs wide
And the river runs deep (And the river runs Deep)
And I spit in the eye of safe company
When I dive right down (Right down)
To the undertow (Undertow)
Well, the deeper I drown
Lord, the higher I will go
38:30 What If I Came Knocking
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What if I came knocking
On your front door some night?
Would you open the window
And drop me down the key?
What if I came knocking
On your bedpost that same night?
Would you open up your heart
Or try to get the best of me?
What if I came knocking
On your brain the next day
And ask for your truth
And your love and your honesty?
Would you build up your big walls
And try to hide behind that smile
Or would you try to pull the wool
Right over me?
So what if I came knocking?
(Ah, what if I came knocking?)
So what if I came knocking?
(Ah, what if I came knocking?)
So what if I came kicking
And it scared you a little bit?
And I came on strong
Would you think
That there's something wrong with me?
Or could it be your fears
Of trying something real
Or just afraid to touch a
A guy like me?
What if I came knocking?
(Ah, what if I came knocking?)
What if I came knocking?
(Ah, what if I came knocking?)
What if I came knocking
On your front door some night?
Ah
So let's just say it worked out
Like a storybook dream
And we lived happily ever after
Fa la la la
But what if I came crying
After just a few weeks
And said I misread my heart
That it's not really meant to be?
Yeah
So if you hear some knocking
On your window tonight
You can bet that it's uh
Probably me
But let it be known
That we're just a pair of tumbling dice
And the outcome of these crap shoots
Is hard to see
So what if I came knocking?
(What if I came knocking?)
So what if I came knocking?
(What if I came knocking?)
So what if I came knocking
On your front door tonight?
Ah
(What if I came knocking?)
So what if I came knocking?
Knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knocking
(What if I came knocking?)
Kick, kick, kick
(What if I came knocking?)
What if I came knocking
On your front porch tonight, tonight?
We appreciate your work
Thank you for the lyrics! I sure wish I could of been at that concert in Chicago in 1993.
mama said "i got next...🙂
That short hair, wow. Looking good, sounding good.
YES its almost 30yr ago buttttttttttttttttt.....Merrit Lear is simply a living doll
GAWD GAWD GAWD
I just thinks John just rocks think he awesome 😎
Here to watch David Grissom
David Grissom best guitarist!
Let's go back to Chicago hey ho.
You could put anyone on stage in any other band and that band would be better.
this is good loved it;;;
how ever American fool best album he ever did
id throw scarcrow in there to
For a man from Indiana he sure has a lot of NYC footage in that first clip
I might put Kenny Aronoff right behind Neil Peart and John Bonham for best drummer ever!!
John is another god like Springsteen
They Couldn't do this song in 2020 Chicago....they'd Get Shot!
🇺🇸
John looks so much better with short hair than with 80’s hair.
Can anyone name the whole band and backup singers?
The guitarist is David Grissom
The drummer is Kenny Arronoff
The girl on violin is Lisa Germano
No Racism here!
and wonderful Chicago girls too .
10:08 human wheels

You can be bald and still play great drums. John is easy to listen to.
38:30 Knocking
He was just a kid too, I believe he still every Thursday in Austin at Continental Club. Amazing town and great guitar player town and music scene
