  • Our chicken coop is finally complete and boy is Shellie happy with here new little she shed. It's a tiny chicken house with a big reveal and we're excited to bring you along. This project has been a long time coming and means more to us than just the chickens. It will be incorporated into our garden and orchard area and the chickens will be used as our little workers for tilling, fertilizer, and preparing the garden for the following season.
    We'll show and explain the nest boxes, perches and spacing, foldable ramps, air flow, food and supply storage, and everything else built into this little tiny chicken house!

      Hi Mike, Shelli and Girls! Wow! Your chicken house is great! I only found one thing wrong with it. It's not mine! Great job, Mike! I'm sure Shellie rely appreciates all your hard work. The floor was so nice it was a shame you have to co er it with shavings. Your little family brings back memories of my childhood with my grandparents!! Your girls will have all these memories for the rest of their lives and they will pass their life experiences to their children. You are doing a wonderful job teaching the girls that family is so precious! Your girls are adorable and they are learning to be hard workers like both their parents. Too bad more parents don't take special time with their children. Your chickens are beautiful and spoiled! Great job on the chicken hose, Mike. You have more energy than anyone I know. Enjoy your "she shed", Shellie! Chickens make great pets. I had one I got for Easter when I was 5. Her name was Henny Penny. She followed me around like a dog and when I called her name she'd come running and want me to pick her up. Great memories!! 💚

    The entire series was brilliant, you toppled quite a few "This is the only way to do it", videos. Smaller is better, give the birds freedom to roam, and increase the productivity of the garden. Thanks for the info.

      Glad you enjoyed it Jim. A lot of thought went into all of this and plenty of experience with different coops over the years. We've had 4 different coops, setups, and locations on our property over the past 16 years and this is a culmination of everything we wanted in one package.

    • @brendamaun5455
      @brendamaun5455 4 роки тому

      Prime example of not following that rule... My son's vet recently treated his puppy's rash by:
      A. Medication
      B. Changing him to an expensive food that it sells
      C. Taking him off treats
      D. Taking him off peanut butter in his Kong when son has to crate him for work.
      So if the rash clears up which of these four treatments was the cure?? Hmmmm.

    This coop turned out spectacular. Those are some lucky chicks. Great job Mike, your life should be so much easier Shellie taking care of your chicks. That coop will last for yrs, so the price tag isn't too bad actually. It was built so strong, so you won't be doing repairs for yrs, other than 2x4 perches being replaced. Well thought out for sure.

    Whoa ...that's one awesome Chicken Chalet/She Shed! I'd put a glass window in the door between the clean part and the coop so Shellie and the girls can see what's going on in the coop without disturbing the flock! It would also provide some light on the clean side since you have windows in the coop side, especially during the winter months.

    Thats a very impressive build, one tip i send you, is employ a removable covering on the perches and the front of the nest boxes, as the chickens will soil wherever they perch/stand and it sets like concrete, i have kept chickens for around ten years now, and i soon found this out, i use a strip of vinyl floor covering, as its easy to remove and clean and then replace after cleaning..i just jetwash it clean then put back into place,,i use re/usable zipties to hold it in place works very well,..and serves a good purpose, in keeping the perch areas clean...

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 роки тому

      I really appreciate the tips, thank you! It was a lot of planning and personal experience that went into this design and we're really happy with it so far. Like you said, though, it's always a good idea to protect the lumber from chicken poop.

    Hey Mike, great coop/ barn. I like you, think chickens are little workers that do a fantastic job in the garden. Only way I can see to improve the coop side is to put little cleats on the gang planks. That way they can have easier footing when going up and down. I'd also round over the perches to make it more comfortable. Great video as usual.

    Awesome coop, love the layout and convenience of storage, roosting area, nesting boxes very well thought out. Price wise you do get what you pay for, yeah you could buy a stand alone coop or get something from a big box store but you would never get that layout and accessories for that price. And as long as it’s maintained it will last a long time and you are right about adding valve to your property with it. Really love Shellie’s Channel she doesn’t an amazing job explaining through her videos.

    Well done on that build,...Every time i mow our lawns, i end up with a large wheel barrow of grass cuttings, so i just tip them in the chicken run and leave it they eat a lot of it,and, they naturally spread it all out , and within 3 days its gone,,now if i were to put that on the compost heap it would still be there weeks later, so the chickens are great recyclers,, then i sieve out some of the floor in the chicken run, and top dress the garden with it ,.they are absolutly the gardeners best friend,...

    Mike you could have used 2x4's (except for floor joist and corner upright post). I like it, would have built it larger, especially the storage part. Could have been more multi purpose.. 12x12 is a bit cramped. I had a Rhododendron Nursery earlier in life and always wanted chickens, but missed some opportunities. I like your common sense and intelligence with respect to building and growing plants. You think the same way i do in so many ways.

      Thanks, Aaron, glad you enjoy the videos! I could have done many things different with this build. I don't have an regrets and do like how it turned out for the purpose we had in mind but if I could do anything different, it would be to extend the roof line another 6 feet off the back for an outdoor shelter. That can always be done down the road though. Thanks for watching.

    Great build. I wish that I thought of making mine a little bit bigger to section it off for a separate brooding area and storage. Mine is 8 feet by 8 feet. There is no such thing as an over build but you can easily under-build.
    One thing though, those hinged perch ramps are a little over the top. Chickens establish a pecking order in the flock, even the hens, and they roost in that order. When I first put my perches in the coop that I just built, you wouldn't believe all the squabbling and ruckus that want on at sundown. This went on for the first couple of days until they got their order established on the perches. Now they go directly to their position on the perches and all is quiet. If you place your perches about a foot by a foot apart like an extra wide ladder, they can easily jump up to their position directly without having to fight their way through those already perched.

    Wonderful job Mike and family, I use chicken manure on all my plants so I will give you a huge thumbs up as it works wonderfully.
    Best manure I have ever used. Like your plans for rotating the garden. Great value for money.!!Take care and be safe..Graham 🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍❤️❤️❤️🐣🐣🐣🐣🐔🐔🐔

      Thanks, Graham! I always knew chicken manure was good stuff but never had anything to compare it to. Well, I was pretty blown away by my wife's experiment and it just cemented the idea in my head even more.

      Mike Kincaid love the chicken manure, we can only get it in pellet form here but you sure know when it’s been sprinkled on the garden haha. Take care Mike.❤️

    Thats a very nice coop great work. Now forward 2 years later $3500 for would be steal with lumber prices gone thru the roof and plywood is worse. I'm guessing $5000 to build now.

  • @Donnybrook10

    nice work but you should have researched minimum space requirements for chickens. 30 birds would need a minimum of 120 sq/ft inside and a 300 sq/ft run. They will be stressed. I learned this the hard way. My coop was not large enough and the hens would bully the weaker ones relentlessly. I built a 10ft x 12ft shed and 10x25 ft enclosed run. They are much happier and the bullying stopped. They need space. You may want to open up that entire barn to them. You could build a cabinet for the supplies like I did.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 роки тому

      Almost 2 years and going strong. The chickens are happy and healthy, providing many eggs on a daily basis. The outside run is close to 4000 square feet.
