I'll have to see if my mom still has my brother's TMNT sheets. This would be an awesome Christmas gift for him.
Aww that would be such a great gift!
Thank you for listing all the measurements and pieces in the written description. (At first I thought I was going to have to quickly scrawl everything down as I watched!) My favorite tip from you is to join the bottom and sides first and then atteach the front and back to them. I always seem to have difficulty making them line up the way I had been doing them, so I am glad to see your technique.
I have sewn for years. But, you are fearless. It is so good to see some one young sewing and having fun. Thanks for your creativity. Your just wonderful. Keep it up!!!!!
Glad you like the video :) I use medium to heavy weight fusible interfacing. If you have trouble finding that just ask an employee in the fabric section and they should be able to take you right to it. My favorite brand is pellon, but most of them will work just fine. Hope that helps!
Your tutorials are so awesome! I love how you speed it up and keep things moving!
That bag is ADORABLE! I can't wait to try this pattern!
Well done video. The fast speeds helps conceptualize the entire bag making process. Thanks!
Whitney, this tutorial is AWESOME! I am not an "experienced" sewing person, by any means…but I made my messenger bag! A friend of mine gifted me with a load of upholstery fabric swatches and I used some of them to make a patchwork messenger bag WITH YOUR HELP!!! Thank you so much for posting this!
That's so awesome! I'm so happy that you made a bag :) I would love to see pics of it! Feel free to share some on my facebook page or on instagram with #whitneysews so I find it!
this is genius, thanks so much! It's so clear I didn't even need to listen to the explanations, watching the video was more than enough to understand all the steps. You're great!
You are just great! My daughter want me to sew a bag for school and I just found the best and right one! Awesome!👌🏾👏🏾
Thank you for stopping by my channel, you are so talented an I love ALL your tutorial. I just took on sewing fairly knew and a beginner in using patterns, but you make it seem do easy... I just wanted to let you know I appreciate you taking the time to make tutorials for a beginner in sewing. thank you ;)
This messenger bag is awesome👍! I sewed it for my daughter 8 y ago in a cute dog/newspaperprint cotton and she just loved it. Now I'll start on 3 messengerbags for my daughter and her nieses for the holiday⛄🎄.
I have had the exact same sheet i got at the market like 5 years ago and have never found anything worth cutting up the sheet for. UNTIL NOW! Definately Making this.
Thankyou as always Whitney!
x
I made one this weekend. It came out awesome, and I'll be using it for visiting the theme parks in LA this coming week. The instructions were great! Thanks for sharing your ideas and projects.
That's awesome! So glad you gave the tutorial a try! I would love to see some pics of your bag :)
I made this bag for my kid for school.thank you for your great video! I also love the t shirt skirt one!
I thrifted this same sheet! Loved finding it.
I just love, love this bag!
Thank you so much for providing us with a competent tutorial... I've been looking all over the place for an easy to understand tutorial on how to make my own messenger bag (tired of trying to find the perfect purse... so I want to make my own lol)
Very easy to understand! 5 stars.
Your tutorial is so awesome! I think I'll give it a try, since my new education starts in a few months.
I hope I can find some awesome fabrics!
I absolutely love this! I will definitely be trying this one out at home.
@livthepig The interfacing was totally needed for my bag because I used cotton fabric. The interfacing is used to make the fabric sturdier and keep it's shape. WIthout interfacing the bag would have looked really slouchy and would have probably ripped after carrying books a couple of times. If you are using very sturdy, heavy weight material then you can get by with just interfacing the bottom and sides.
Thanks for this video!! I rewatch it every time I make a bag because I can't wrap my head around the final finishing steps (right sides together, sew, turn and voila!) thank you!
Awesome! I"m so glad it has been helpful!
Never mind I figured it out thank you so much for this tutorial I made one for me six year old and will be starting on one for my eight year old and one for my self I couldn't believe I actually made something that looked so professional I thank you so much for your detailed instructions
roxie rios Sorry I wan't able to get back to you quickly, but glad you got it figured out! I'm so glad you made the bag(s) and that you love them! :)
I'm going to do this soon and use it for middle school next year. I can't wait to start!
Awesome! Let me know how it turns out :)
Love it!!! I've been wanting to make one cause my dad gave me some of his old work pants so their pretty sturdy so I think they would be perfect to make bags out of!
Thank you for answering so quickly. Now I can start working on it with no worries! ♥ I'll try and get a picture to you when I'm finished.
Please keep us up to date as soon as you do the Pellon Messenger bag.. I am looking foward to the pattern. Bought material. I am excited.
i'm gonna make this bag and add pockets onto the sides and one on the inside and use this as a diaper bag when my daughter is born, i love this bag, and it gives me something to use up some extra pink Paris fabric. thanks for posting this :)
OMG, awesome tutorial! I suck at making straight lines that are perfect, but hopefully I will improve! I will attempt this bag soon, I look forward to your tutorials
Thanks for your reply Whitney. My husband research the machine and it from the early 50s!
can't wait to try it out!!!!!! I'm going to add more pockets because its going to be a diaper bag for my friend.
Absolutly love it!!!!!
Awesome bag!

Hey Whitney, Love the bag! It was very easy to make and you gave great instructions.I was looking for you on facebook but had no such luck. I look forward to more videos.
Awesome tutorial, you make it look so easy :) TFS!
Thank you so much. I needed a tutorial video just to help me with figuring out how to do attach the lining to the bag, and you're the only one who seemed to explain it and show it clearly. By the way, I love the bag. You gave me an idea... I might make one for my friend, except with Batman sheets..... =D
It was so easy to follow. I recommend use foam interfacing
Thank you sooo much for this i've had this bedding for awhile now and finally know what to do for my son. Thnks babe!
Glad you liked the tutorial! Let me know how your bag turns out :)
omg! luv ur tutorial tfs,u r very precise n get right to the point, awesum talent ,will subscribe!
this was a very good tutorial!
Cute! Great tutorial.
Thank you, I've just completed my first messenger bag.
That's so awesome! Would love to see pics of it :)
Another great video. Thanks. So glad I found your channel. I been busy checking out your videos.
Awesome! So glad you like the video and my channel :)
Thank you for your answer about " curve Line " . I love your bag, î'm trying to make it with oil cloth ...... Merci et bonne journée.. Catherine from Paris.
great tutorial, thanks for sharing!
Super idea. Thank you.
wooo. I really like this tutorial! Your so awesome for taking the time to make these helpful step by step tutorials!
Great tutorial, I made this out of an old pair of black jeans with a cute blue/white check for lining, I used the original pockets, waist band,, buttons. Really easy to follow. Thanks :)
That sounds really cool!
This is an awesome tutorial! Im definitely going to try this one day!!
Awesome!! Am glad I found your video!! Thank you!!
I Love ❤ this messenger bag!👍👍I'm going to try and make this for my self! Thank You for sharing.😊
Awesome! You'll have to let me know how it turns out! BTW make sure you are using the info in the description box instead of the graphic in the video for the measurements because the graphic had a few typos :)
oh my goodness this is so cool!!! my son and i were watching it i hope we get to make a bag like this one day! im not that advanced but i hope i get it once im trying to make one. god bless we're looking forward to your newer videos.
Glad you like it! If you give it a try make sure your annotations are on because there are a few corrections noted on the video. Let me know how it goes :)
I will thank you so much. ♡♥♡
I had those exact same sheets as a child!!
The only times a 1/4 inch is used is to attach the back pocket to one lining and the front pockets to the front. That is so they will be attached but the seam won't show when the rest of the bag is assembled.
Thanks, that helps alot. I can't wait to make a bag!
Thanks for the tutorial gonna make on soon
Best tutorial ever.
LOVE IT!!!
Thank you for the information!
Wow....that was great! Thank you! Going to see if my nephew still has his turtle sheets lol
I think i may have the matching pillow case to these TMNT sheets! haha It was my hubby's from when he was a kid, his mom gave it to me for "safe keeping" This is such a great tutorial.
@Chevy143r I'm so glad you like my tutorials! I do my best to make them easy to understand for any sewing level :)
@readwriteread I put two textbook sized books in it. The bottom saged a little bit, but it help up. If you are worried about it you can make a plastic insert to put in the bottom for added strength :)
The bag I made using cotton and interfacing would probably hold a mac just fine. However, if you're concerned about it it not being sturdy enough you can use heavier material such as a twill or denim weight fabric.
Haha!! I love these sheets!! I love collecting them too! I have some Capt America & Transformers that I adore!! This tut was so detailed and easy to understand! Great job sweety!! oxox Tany
Hi, I'm so glad that you liked the project! I would love to see pics of your bag :) There is a link to my facebook page in the description box. Just make sure it's on the About tab under the video then click Show More.
You definitely have the best instructions! And you could probably sell this pattern like others do. One person has 135K subscribers. Imagine just 10% buying the pattern at 3.99! I enjoy your tutorials! So I guess if you want velcro you would have to attach it before assembling!
So cool!
GREAT JOB
u made my day as usual :D
Woooow
I will try it
I have the same sewing machine! It is my ole faithful that I will NOT get rid of. It will sew anything. The rubber belt has been replaced 2x. I have found a GOTO replacement. It is a Brother CS06000i. I even have a lemon of a Bernina but went back to Brother. The CS6000i is SOOOOOOOOOO much lighter and has a precision needle down feature and pretty inexpensvie. I can lift with one arm with ease instead of getting a hernia with the older model. Sews like butter!!!! Love love it. Just to let you know.
Gail Maltese Thanks :) I got that one at a thrift store about 4 years ago. I don't use it anymore because it didn't sew fast enough for me. I love sewing really fast so I use a different vintage machine that you can see in my newer videos.
@kdkid13 Thanks for pointing that out. I made the graphic really late at night and typed L instead of I. Cut out interfacing for back #1&2 instead of a lining.
Great! Thank you!
@cindiasaurusrex There are different weights of interfacing, so using heavier weight will help and obviously the heavier your fabric is the stronger it will be. Store bought bags may be starched or have inserts (cardboard or plastic) in the bottom. But even some store bought bags don't hold their shape well...I think it's a matter of trying out different differnt fabrics and interfacing and seeing what works best with each purse design.
Awesome tut. It rocks. Could you add batting?
I love it, and glad I got to be a part of helping you make some fun decisions! =0)
Very Cool!
Love the bag! Wondering where to sew my velcro. Should I deduct the bottom measurement(because flap will hang over the top)from my front so that it lines up? Please help. Thanks
Lindura muchas graciassssss te adorooooo
This is so awesome. Thank you so much. I need to find Strawberry Shortcake or Taz Mania Devil fabric and it is on. HA HA.
This tutorial was so easy to follow. Thank you. I looked at several tutorials and yours was the easiest and by far the coolest. I seriously love that Ninja Turtles bag.
I made a doctor who bag. The exterior of the bag is repeating rows of the TARDIS. The lining has stars and galaxy type swirls.
I had made a 10th/11th dress for comicon a few weeks back and had extra material. The dress' bodice was made to look like 11's costume while the skirt was made to look like the 10's blue pinstripe costume. Since I left over skirt material I made the front pockets out of the blue pinstripes rather than using the same TARDIS fabric for the whole thing. I had planned on skipping the buttons part but I was in Hobby Lobby and I came across these really cute red bow buttons. Thinking "Bow ties are cool." I decided to go ahead and add the buttons. It turned out really cute. One thing I did differently is I rounded the corners of the front flap.
That sounds so awesome! There's a Dr. Who tote bag I have planned, but haven't gotten around to making it yet. Maybe someday ;)
@brooklynbaby, can you post a picture?
@amomschoice Of course! You could add batthing and turn it into a laptop bag or diaper bag or whatever you want :)
My Son asked me to make him a messenger bag ... This one is the best I found on youtube for a man. But I am fairly new to sewing.. I have made the tote from one of your tutorials. Thank you. If I start this project ... I hope you will be there if I have any questions. PS you and your husband wearing the tote convinced me on the size of the bag. Looks really cool.
I hope you give this bag a try! Make sure to refer to the description box for the correct pieces to cut because I had a couple of typos on the graphic in the video. If you want the bag to be really sturdy go with a material heavier than the cotton used in the video or use a heavier stabilizer. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do whatever I can to help you out :)
Thank you... I am going for it 8)
Front/Back/Flap - 2 E, 4 L, 2 I
Back #1 - 1E, 1 I
Back #2 - 1 E, 1 I
Side - 2 E, 2 L, 2 I
Bottom - 1 E, 1 L, 1 I
Front Pocket - 2 E
Strap - 1 E, 1 I
I am not getting this info... I feel silly but what am I missing? ps Thank you. For those of who sew please no laughing 8)
E means exterior fabric. L is lining fabric. I is interfacing. So use the measurements from the video for each piece. So for the front pocket you need 2 pieces cut from your exterior fabric measuring 15 x 9 inches and so on. Hope that helps :)
I made the messenger bag and I love it... Going to give it to my son for his birthday. I was afraid of the button part so I used the clasp and D-ring (from your Messenger style purse) for the closure on the front. I took it one part at a time... and it worked. Thank you. Now I want to make your Messenger Style Purse, Love the idea for recycling material from other clothing and cloth... Have a great day!
I love your video. Thanks for showing us how to make these. I do need to know, What kind of interfacing do you use? I went to the hobby store and there were so many different kinds. I've never used it before. Thank you!
Thanks! I don't have a PDF for it, but may end up creating one in the future as a partnership with pellon.
@C00k13L0v3 It was medium weight iron-in interfacing :)
You want to put it so the one raw edge of the flap is at the top lined up with outer and lining raw edges.
Hey Whitney! Do you think you can make a tutorial for adding a divider inside a pouch? Thanks
All the piece measurements are in the video. The final bag size is in the link below the video that says Bag Listing.
If you pause the video at 1:00 in there is a chart showing all the measurements. *Make sure your annotations are turned on because there are a few corrections. The instructions are a bit fast, but I had to get a lot into one video. If you watch it a few times and have it to refer to while sewing it should make sense. BTW great idea on using periods :)
hey Whitney, I'm about to start making this bag. I'm really excited but i wanted to know if you can make an adjustable strap and wallet tutorial. I've seen a couple but they don't explain the steps as good as you do. thank you:)
They are correct. There is extra measurement in there to account for the seam allowance from adding in the zipper. I've made 5 of them and they all turned out right :) However I did make a mistake on the graphic for how many to cut on some pieces so make sure your annotations are turned on for the corrections.
Thanks!
