  • In this episode I do the initial shaping of the back braces and have some fun with the tap tune feature of Peterson Strobosoft for Mac.

Nice work, Susan. Thank you for these wonderful build-vids.

Acoustic guitar top tuning is pitchcraft :-) A regular straight chisel works well in that, when used bevel down. You need curved chisels for cavity bottoms and such.

I’ve since used my safe edge straight chisel and it’s much easier.

Ms. Gardener, all this new technology is fine, but my mentor (for 20 years) & I have been making beautiful looking and beautiful sounding guitars, for many years. Without this technology. We hear & feel the tap test on the top as well as the back. We do have a different way of bracing. Maybe that's the difference, or maybe we love the wood & let it tell us what it wants to sound like.
I'm sure you will agree that a beautiful guitar is amazing to see, but if it doesn't sound as beautiful as it looks, it's just a piece of art.
I'm sorry if I have offended you in any way, that is/was not my intention. Technology is right for some things, where would our world be without it ? Craftsmanship made a Stradivarius & many many different shapes & sizes of guitars.

I’m sure your guitars do sound lovely, but what is it that you are suggesting? This is just one tool in trying to understand what is going on and to interpret the information in the various papers and books I’ve read. I will definitely be using love in my work though.

Trasimeno Guitar I did hear what she said in the beginning. Someone seeing this video firstn might think that is the way guitars are made. Judging by your name here, I'm sure you know different.

I think a piece of advice that a lot will agree on, is to take lots of notes as you build, so you can compare each build with previous ones. This is one of many ways to measure what is going on.

Whether you’re aiming for a similar sounding guitar or not, surely measurements are a way to get there? I had someone claim a while back that this is all down to instinct and can’t be taught, but if that person is making decisions on tone and he is shaping and thicknessing based on that, then he must be using a measurement of some sort to make that decision even if it’s with his eyes and ears. If my next guitar sounds different, be that subjectively better or worse, I’d hope to have information to base decisions on what I do with the next guitar, or how to fix a problem

I hope my next guitar does sound different, because I hope I was able to make a decision or 2 during the build that improved the way it sounded. Maybe that will be based on measurements or maybe it won’t, but if I don’t have the measurements then I’ll be relying on instinct, and I believe instinct comes from study and practise - you aren’t born with it.

Susan I wonder if you've thought of using the software Trevor and most of the falcate guys are using (including me now!). It's called Visual Analyser and it's freeware. I've been capturing frequency spectrums (spectra) from the free plates and now from the closed box. I've been using a Shure SM58 and Behringer preamp to generate the signal and a Staedtler pencil eraser duct taped to a 30cm or so stick of spruce for the taps. Trying to use a method consistent with what everyone is doing and that seems to be accurate. ANZLF is your friend if you want to find out more!

Does the Behringer preamp provide compression? I understand the signal needs to be compressed in order to give the analyser enough to work with. The kit I have is all a bit large scale - my compressor is rack mounted. If I can do it all on the Mac then it’s so much easier

@@SusanGardener I think more accurately the thing I have is an audio interface. The SM58 wasn't able to pick up enough of a signal to generate a spectrum when all I was using was an XLR to USB adapter. With this it's no problem and the spectra I generate are crystal clear. The peaks for the various modes are very obvious with VA as well which helps someone like me who is new to allof this. Couldn't tell you whether the signal is compressed or not. This is the thing I have Behringer U-PHORIA UMC202HD 24 Bit/192 kHz USB Audio Interface www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00SAV0VP0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GNg1Cb9KJNMV4

There doesn’t appear to be any compression so you are probably just getting more gain. I have a focusrite interface that will do the same. I’ll give it a go

Good afternoon, my name is Cristiano, I'm from Brazil. I'm in love with guitars. I'm discovering the luteria. I'm putting together money to buy the materials. Some molds I've already made. However, what made me try to build my own guitars was precisely the fact that I did not find the sound I wanted. So I watched several videos of the construction process. I have come to the conclusion that, in addition to good woods, this final work is needed at the top and bottom. I see the lutiers pounding and listening, but I can not understand the tones and what to do to improve. If it is possible to record a video showing a program that shows us the tones and the work to be done at the top and bottom. Thank you very much for your videos. A hug from a simple Brazilian.

Very informative. You may be interested in checking out Izzy Swan, I think his name is, he has made an upgrade to his bandsaw which I think you would find helpful in guitar building. Looking forward to seeing your next video. 👍🏻
