The CEO Who Sings the Beatles But Can’t Impress Her Mum, Indra Nooyi on Her 'Life in Full'

  • In a fascinating interview filled with delightful anecdotes of her childhood, her school days and her career, the former CEO and Chairperson of Pepsico has said for her mother she was never a high-flying CEO of one of America’s top companies but a mother, daughter and wife with duties to perform at home. On the day she became President of Pepsico in December 2000, Indra Nooyi returned home bursting to share her success with her family only to get the following response from her mother: “You may be the President or whatever of Pepsico, but when you come home, you are a wife and a mother and a daughter. Nobody can take your place. So you leave that crown in the garage.” Before she even got a chance to tell the family her good news, she was sent out by her mother to buy milk.
In a 45-minute interview with Karan Thapar for The Wire to mark the launch of her autobiography ‘My Life in Full’, Indra Nooyi has recounted a multitude of stories about the middle-class Hindu Brahmin family she was born into in Madras in 1955, her childhood, the school band she was part of, her early years working in Johnson & Johnson and selling sanitary pads, how she met and married Raj Nooyi, what made her join Pepsico, the early difficult years when she, in fact, resigned and, finally, what it was like to head one of America’s most important companies for 13 years. Indra Nooyi also talks about how her husband, Raj, often put her career ahead of his and how her daughters, Preetha and Tara, lost something of their mother as she climbed the corporate ladder to the very top. She said she has struggled to ensure that she is always a good wife and caring mother but working flat out, for whichever company she was employed by, was a part of her character which she could not change.

People like this woman show how to be a good servant, a good worker for a corporation. She's had some success, but Indians should now start becoming business owners, not just workers.

I am a great fan and vivid follower Of Ms. Indra Nooyi. Of all the interviews with Ms. Nooyi on her biography that I saw I feel only Mr. Thappar has truly read the book page to page. The questions were insightful and helped the guest to bring out the deeper meaning of her book. Ms. Nooyi's responses were as usual to the point and inspiring. An extraordinary life explained in simple terms. So good of Mr. Thappar to acknowledge the co-author of the book at the end. THIS IS THE REAL REVIEW OF THE BOOK.

Becoming CEO and Chairman of a multinational company might be considered great achievement. But calling Mrs Indra Nooyi 2nd most successful Indian women after Mrs Indira Gandhi is not fair. She can be considered most successful Indian women in corporate world. There are thousands of Indian women who have contributed a lot in their respective field and profession i.e. science, research, politics, education, social service, art, music etc.

Karan sir! at last the parents the grand parents the siblings/spouse as in the case of indira nuyi as well as of kamla harris remain the unending support helping hand and everlasting impression .In other words mothers especially in most of the cases reduce themselves to nil in order to lift her children to gain more of the circumstances. In her words also madam nuyi admitted that perhaps more time should have been given to daughters or must be given backstaging herself as parent It is the ultimate the sacrifices on the part of parents in one's shining.

Indra is just incredible but I am disappointed at Karan. She has done incredibly well and deserves the recognition and so does her family. But Karan’s focus on showcasing Raj over and over again felt a bit unnecessary and perhaps a pretty cheap shot at not giving Indra more credit for what she has done. Does he do the same when he would interview a male leader? If not - then enough said. Hats off Indra - you are adorable and inspiring - which is a rare combination of words to use for a leader.
