    This is the exact video I was looking for. I suppose I vlogged 'before it was cool' in 2002 with a $30 camera and tons of SD cards (silly teen videos lol). Since then I collected short videos on flip & smart phones. I don't know much about cameras so I've spent months looking into products and recommendations. I found most reviews seem to focus on what is popular or hyped rather than functionality and purpose. Thank you!!

    This feels like a terrible time to be getting into the entry-level (say $750 and below) mirrorless market for the first time. It makes sense to me to buy into a brand / sensor / lens line that I can grow into over time.
    But....
    -M43 looks to be on its last legs (with Olympus DOA, Panasonic seems to be increasingly backpedaling away from M43 and into FF)
    -Canon appears poised to walk away from the M mount (and possibly APS-C sensors longer-term)
    -Nikon is in some degree of financial trouble, doesn't yet have a mirrorless in this price range, and has basically zero Z-mount lenses right now, with no indicator that will change anytime soon
    -The only Sony available in that price range that will do 4K (ZV-1) doesn't have interchangeable lenses, and that fixed lens has an insufficient wide-angle range
    -Sony also appears to be moving away from APS-C and more fully towards FF
    -Olympus is functionally out of business until JIP shows otherwise
    -Fujifilm may or may not make a camera in this price range (the X-A7, released just over a year ago, appears to be out of stock almost everywhere) and the X-T200 (priced just outside of this range at $800). And neither of them seem to be competitive with the likes of the M50, G7 / G85, and the ZV-1 which are all cheaper right now (but all dead-ends, as noted above).
    With all of that, what on earth do these companies expect a newbie to do? Yes, smartphones are killing camera sales, but so is this. There's no place for me in the entry-level mirrorless photography market right now. Every direction I turn is a dead-end, where I'm ultimately wasting money, because I can't safely invest in any particular lineup (brand, sensor, lens, type) without having to pitch it all and start over when I'm ready to upgrade.
    Whew...I feel better now. Been researching cameras for months, and the above frustration has been endlessly swirling around in my head.
    All that said...I'm leaning toward the ZV-1, as my usage is going to lean video-heavy for the time being.
    Anyone got an idea?

      Sounds like you’re overthinking it. The number 1 most important thing is to just buy something and start shooting. Your time and expertise has the biggest impact on the photos - not the equipment. And you won’t actually know what YOU like until you try it. Sounds like you’ve already lost a few months playing and practicing with something new that could help take you to the next level. So my best advice is to just buy something and get shooting.
      But if you’re worried about longevity, get a Sony a6100. That’s the most solid platform that is definitely not going anywhere anytime soon and 3rd-party lenses are continuing to roll out. The Sigma 16/30mm f1.4 are two amazing lenses for the price after you outgrow the kit lens.

I too am very much over analytical & hyper observant. As such, I first just wanted to say thank you for committing ur time to not only write all that but to also go thru with sending it out which I only say due to the fact that so many comments across all platforms commonly latch onto comments like this from never possessing the ability to consider placing empathy for another’s circumstance above their own various triggers in which ultimately results in refraining from expressing their unwanted negative opinion. Personally, reading what u wrote couldn’t have expressed anymore perfectly my exact same feeling of frustration which continues to result in a limbo state of commitment. Esp given times we’re living in couldn’t be anymore uncertain all around therefore to just blow that kind of money on just picking one despite none that check all the boxes or offers a comfort level of digital ability for the necessary upgrades to the base that would allow you to commit given it feels like the industry is experiencing a continuous level of superiority which always means there’s an equally rapid chance of being obsolete. As with many things the best is becoming yet just another variance of a computer however is it far enough along in which the product can’t just be upgraded yet? Anyway glad to hear u finally did get something. I msg try to hit up a few pawn shops or go the alternative route as well. Again, glad u wrote out what u wrote as it’s a more common dilemma than we realize.

      The problem with the Canon G7X series is that their autofocus is unreliable because they use a more basic technology for it and often times it can have the background be in focus and not your face. Plus the Sony is going to be better in low light and have 4K if you want it. I’d definitely go Sony ZV1 over Canon G7X.

    I was originally into Micro Four Thirds, but the lens options there are pretty expensive, and as much as I like Panasonic, man, their autofocus is just the worst. So I sold all that equipment a few years back, and now, getting back into the game again, this time went with the Fujifilm X-T200, with the included 15-45mm kit lens for $674 CAD + tax. The 4K performance is crisp, and with XC 23mm lens or the XC 50-230mm lens is reasonably priced.

      For me, the flip-down screen is a dealbreaker. On the go vlogging means needing some kind of tripod to attach it too and it would block the screen. Odd decision considering they've had fully articulating flip out screens for years. Otherwise, specs-wise, it looks pretty good! Would love to see an ultrawide angle lens, too.

    Could u elaborate more on why u say the M6 Mark II is overpriced? Also, what do u think about the rolling shutter issues on the a6400?

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  3 роки тому

      If you’re after 1080p video, you don’t get much on the M6 vs the M50 for way less. If you want 4K, the M6 doesn’t have the same detail as Sony and no log/flat profiles. And the 120fps doesn’t have autofocus like the Sony. I had the a6500 and the rolling shutter was bad. Haven’t personally used the a6400 so I can’t say if it’s better but rolling shutter in 4K is an issue in almost any cheaper camera with a bigger sensor and the quick movement of handheld blogging doesn’t help. It kinda just comes with the territory in 4K.

    Great content. I have a noob question. I create cycling vlogs on my gopro and iphone. if there is no lighting, the gopro fails but the stabilization is amazing when filming on my bicycle. does the M50 or EOS RP have very good stabilization? or would I have to invest in a specific lens to minimize this problem? Do you have any suggestions? I would be looking at 800-1200 CAD. the m50, sony vlog camera and eosrp piqued my interest since they might fix my problem and be better at vlogging.

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  3 роки тому +2

      There’s really nothing out there that can stabilize like a GoPro in such a tight, small package. Getting similar results with a camera would require a big gimbal and you’d have this huge setup that would be awful to attach to anything. But the trade off is that the GoPro has a really small sensor that can’t capture a lot of light so when it gets dark, it gets grainy and gross. Sadly in this moment in time, there just isn’t a good solution - lens and camera stabilization helps for handheld shots where you’re pretty stable but it can’t come anywhere close to what a GoPro can do. In a few years, the AI tech in nighttime photos will make its way to video and change that but for now, you can pick either stable or better in low light. Not both.

    • @JustinReves

      Getting off your bike to film is certainly a solution. However, the M50 is subpar in low light - it’s great at a lot of things but low light is it’s weakness. I’d look at bumping up the Sony a6100 if you could. It’s much better.

There was a time where it was like $200 or more difference but I think lately they have been pretty close. You can see the difference here: ua-cam.com/video/231ipoxfeNc/v-deo.html
      And as long as the camera mic is designed for cameras (doesn't need power from somewhere else) it should be good. I have lots of Shure things around my office - I haven't tried the camera ones but I'm... sure... they'd be just fine. With cheaper cameras, you just don't want to push the volume too hard in the camera or they can get noisy. Turn it down and bring up the volume in the edit for cleaner sound.

    Hey Justin. Love the video. Wondered if you could give me a quick minute of your time. I'm look for a top mirrorless vlogging camera that will only be used for indoor video. It's going to be fixed to a teleprompter and used with an external Rode NTG Mic (it won't be used for any other purposes except blogging inside). Am looking for a selfy-screen, clean HDMI output and preferably, no 30 min restriction for live steaming, good auto-focus, along with a superb lens for indoor filming I have hunted everywhere and am finding it so difficult to choose. My business is paying for it so money is no problem at all. Essentially, what would you get (in my situation)? Sorry to ask, but I am honestly at my wits end as to what's best for my needs. Thanks in advance for your help, and once again thank you for the great videos!

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  3 роки тому

      Ok, so question - are you planning to record while you're live streaming? Or do you just need a clean HDMI out and the camera to not turn off? Most cameras have a 29:59 recording limit but will stay on forever until they exhaust their battery if they are connected via HDMI.

      I think this camera and lens are the best sub-$2,000 combo:
      Sony a6400 - amzn.to/3eD9kX7
      Sony 10-18mm - amzn.to/2Po5tnY
      You get great autofocus, flip up screen, super wide angle vlogging look, 4K, log for great colour grading, clean HDMI out, and you can power the camera via USB to keep it going longer for livestreams (although a proper dummy battery or AC adapter is better). But this is if you want the ultra-wide angle vlogging look. I have a feeling with the teleprompter setup, you want to be a little further back from the camera. In that case, the Sony 16-55 f/2.8 would be a better choice - a bit more but it would give a lot more flexibility for backing up or doing all sorts of shots: amzn.to/3aIMsUN
      Other option if you have some flexibility to move the tripod closer and don’t need to zoom are the Sigma prime lenses. Like this 30mm and would be way under budget: amzn.to/3aHy5QC

    Newbie here! Deciding on my first vlogging cam. How do you get the bokeh effect? That's not a "mode", it a lens that does that?

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  3 роки тому +1

      Correct! Not an effect (although phones can now fake it for photos through processing) but it’s the lens having a wide aperture (think of your eye when a room is dark - it opens wide) mixed with a large sensor (tough for the tiny sensors in phones to do this but sensors in mirror less cameras like these are much bigger). Put those two things together and you will get a blurry background. The wider a lens can open up and the bigger the sensor, the blurrier the background.

      They are still in two different leagues. Pocket 2 has a gimbal so it’s smoooth but a smaller sensor and no zoom so it’s not going to look as good especially in lower light or give you those cinematic vibes if you want to add in nice b-roll.
