I came to his music fully in the 1990's when an art instructor would play his music during class. His ability to weave humor and tragedy into such compelling music is unique in contemporary music. Its like being able to find a perverse joy in the Great Depression and the Seige of Leningrad. It is human misery writ as SNL sketch. Thank you for reminding me that even tragedy is beautiful.
I just imagining Tom at a piano in a dingy bar, beer glasses in different states of doneness and him drunk af singing this on the spot, like he wasnt even hired, he saw the the piano and just started to play and sing, or atleast told someone to play and he sits with them, the pianist being the second voice
I love this song. It makes me picture me and my husband singing this to a buffalo. He hunts buffalo and drinks their blood. I wanna do that. Sounds like fun. Oh flesh.
I hear you, man. I love the guy but he’s got a million of songs like this. I just skip them. He’s got whole albums with like half an actual song on them.
@@Thelionatays Have you seen the opera this album was written for? Some of the songs may seem unapproachable on the album, but work really well on stage.

Why do i always think of Max Schreck in Nosferatu make-up, smiling and singing engagingly..as the passegers mount a rickwty bus in the dead of night
Judging by the theatrical productions, you aren't far from what was intended
I think of a decaying Herman Goering
For me, it brings to mind “Caligari”!
I used to have an air organ. It makes this sound perfectly. I miss it!
Is that anything like a skin flute??!
otherwise known as a reed organ, yes?

Hear me out... Robert Eggers adapts this to the big screen. There would surely be a role in there for Willem Dafoe.
There's a joke in there about Willem playing Wilhelm ;)
Frank blacks other band Frank Black and the Catholics have an amazing cover of this song if you like the pixies check it out
German Flintstones was weird.
Tom can't decide if this is a french or german accent

@@sophiatalksmusic3588 just a question since I'm newer to tom waits, is the opera this is written for Der freischutz?
