- This is a general guide video on how my friend John D. repaired my MOTU Traveler Audio Interface that had a faulty Firewire Comms port, by replacing the integrated circuit TSB41AB2 by Texas Instruments.
A special thanks to john for giving up his precious time to fix my gear.

Good video... I have an Allen and Heath Zed R16 that has just died - seems that the Firewire interface has died. So, this video has given me the confidence to start thinking about a repair that I can manage myself. Thanks! (was a good surprise to see you doing this video when I searched for it - I've watched a few of yours in the past!)
They most likely used the same IC for the firewire comms. Good luck. Let me know how you go with yours.

@@Jaburu - Not yet. I eventually got the replacement chip, but with lockdowns for nearly two years haven't been able to find anyone local to fix it. It's way too small a part for me to do myself. I'll get there eventually.

What kind of reason of damage? My MOTU 8Pre USB was damaged by 110V potential between it's ground and the computer ground when I unplug it from computer before unplugging it from power socket. I'm trying to fix it now.
hi bro this IC TSB41AB2 will fix my motu 828mk1 problem? firewire port It is not recognized in any mac or pc computer via firewire, it turns on normal but not even for optical achievement that it is on any machine, any ideas?
On my 828 MK2 the F.W chip has a bunch of pre-shorted pins. Did yours have the same?
Sir I have 828 hybrid mk3.it's sound droping again & again while working,otherwise it is working well.I changed the cable& reinstalled the driver also but the problem still occurs. Please guide what to do.Thanks

Thank u i am glade to see your video actually i have motu mk3 ultralite hybrid and problem is that it not working mic 1 and 2 in recording cubase even i did asign and enable every thing i thing its a hardware problem when i open cuemix console card show a little wave of volium i dont know why and some time i record mic in software after record listen only noise or distort only mic 1 and 2 give error please help me out
I'm having a difficult time with my 8pre. The read out is flashing in a very unusual way and it will not transmit sounds into my DAW. :(
IMHO, it's very-very unstable model. I was have 3 MOTU 8Pre USB. All has a big problems with it's stability. However MOTU 24 I/O works well.
I recieved a mk2 for FREE as previous owner didnt want. Im wondering if its having similar issues. When i connect unit to my Pc, it freezes. This is really no big deal as i hv a Focusrite Pro24 to use (and 2other Interfaces) but wants to see if mine was repairable lol

I've had my traveler MK3 for going on 13 years and I love it to bits, BUT...
The metal around the Firewire sockets is so soft that it's far too easy to insert the plug the wrong way and that kills the TI1394. Happened to me as well. I'm generally quite good at soldering but still wouldn't touch this kind of SMD chip. So, I've had to send in my interface and have it repaired by the official German distributor who replaced the whole board. 350 euros!
Another prob with the soft metal collar around the socket is that the plug doesn't sit firmly. That combined with the stiffness of the usual Firewire cable leads to the unfortunate situation that inadvertently touching the cable can disconnect it and the recording is lost.
There should be something like a locking Firewire connector.

How did you know it was the chip and not something else that was the problem?
It's a common issue with lot of Firewire devices having the chip damaged as they have no protection, especially when there is ground (earth) connection voltage difference between two devices being connected.
Great news for my motu 828 mk3. It works great standalone, but cannot be recognised by computer. No any card or driver works.
hi there mine has a connection problem as well, 828mk3, usb connection not getting itself to be proven functioning, a power surge issue i assume, so i want to ask if usb input in the device, i mean the connection hub, has a chip like your firewire had too? and would you share if you have any suggestions, about what shall i do, thx
Sorry, no. USB is different to Firewire and I have no clue.

i have a Motu Traveler mk3, and while im playing music it there is like a CLICK weird sound, do u know whatcould it be?
Is it loud click sound or a constant low level noise, like a motor running? It could be due to unshielded firewire cable, or low quality firewire pci card?
RecordingStudio9.com its a Motu Traveler mk3, its like a craking noise! I can say that every 30 secods, its not loud but anoying, that noise sounds like when scratch something! Kind of vinilo dirty sound.

got same issue with a motu 8pre, i will try to repair... the TI 1394 circuit costs less than 10$...
Just a question: how did you know the firewire chip breakdown was the cause of the problem ? I have a similar board and when I connect it to the firewire port of my PC, the clock frequency light starts blinking. When connected to the PC before beeing turned on, it does not boot... Do you think it's the same problem? Knowing that the board perfectly works in stand alone mode... Thanks !
Well, if everything else works but no communication with the PC, then it's the chip, and tjis issue is very common.

@@MsSolomonkane I see. your symptoms seam to be diferent. normaly the defect firewire chip has no influence on the boot and internal clock afaik
Is M AUDIO PROFIRE 2626 also using the TSB41AB2 chipset?

@@RecordingStudio9 I have made improvements to Presonus, and used the same chipset that you used. but don't know for 2626 whether to use the same chpiset you use..
Did it faulty chip affects your record input and out put signal i have an mk3 it shows up but no input or output
No, the faulty chip was the FireWire chip and had no effect on the audio part.
I also have 828 mk3 fw with no connection recognized. Now after this video will try to replace chip as well. But also I didnt have headphone outputs, then in settings i found it was muted 😄
Hi everybody and ,first excuse my bad english(i'm in france) , i did this repaire on a Traveler MK 1an that's work fine for more than a year , a thruiy rebuth for this 18 years old machine .I've just buy a seconde hand Motu Traveler MK 3 for 35 euros !!! .Of cource it was sold for parts but the stand alone mode seems to work (lcd , menus , params are access with front buttons) but no computers recognise it ....That's remind me very bad memories . The card did n't disconnect one for all (as the seller said ) first he connected the firewire in the wrong way !!!! and he made a first repaire by a "professional"...That's work for a certain time and it began to have connection interrupt an finely no connecton at all , the " professional" said that it was too complicated (surtenly too mutch time and wet ) to do .I hope it's only bad or dry weldings and that's shoud be great but don't dream , i thinks the firewire is "over , out , finish".I'm gonna open it tomorow and chek the chipset ref. but ,if it is the same as the MK 1 ,i know were to find it in france (last time they tolde me that they have the lastest stock" in the entire world") - only 1499 pieces-i din't beleave them but....Perhaps with your friend you can teatch me the good way to do ,my technicien is micro soldering specialiste , he repaired the Mk 1 in 48 h , amaysing !!!.Hordering the chip is longer than the repared.hope you can help me an all other musicians "folks"thank you for all Eric Vert

Penso que esse ship de minha placa firewire 2626 esta queimado. Ou o mesmo da minha placa das portas firewire. Porque o PC nao reconhece a placa 2626. A placa firewire texas o compuitador diz que esta funcionando corretamente.

These IC's firewire texas instrument TSB41AB2 are rubbish i've had 3 failures in separate hardware and no i'm not hot swapping firewire cable's
son muy malos , pero creo que es el diseño en motu , son delicados y no hay un buen buffer en la parte de alimentación .
