I just discovered this channel and this "Interfacing Linux" series. Great stuff. Subscribed! I didn't know so much progress had been made getting these devices working properly in Linux -- I tried it many years ago, but it just wasn't adequately functional yet. Thanks for showing how much things have progressed!
I have 2x MOTU 828mkII FW interfaces. One of them I bought back then they were still new. After about 5 years, it fell victim to capacitor plague but I revived it with new caps. The other unit I got on eBay about 5 years ago for $50 as non-working. I took a gamble, figuring it also was suffering from capacitor plague based on the seller's description, and I was right -- it's been working perfectly ever since I recapped it.
While the 828mkII doesn't have the DSP and other features of newer DAWs, it's still a fantastic device for high quality tracking/mixing/monitoring.
MOTU just announced a new 828, with a USB-C connection using USB2/3 protocol. It's just plain 828 without any suffixes. I guess, after 23 years, they decided they can re-use the model number without confusion.
Yeah, firewire interfaces pretty much work out of the box on Linux these day.
The new 828 looks like a budget version of the 828ES.
@@linuxgamecastI booted into Xubuntu earlier today and both 828mkII units were seen! Very exciting. Time to set up the audio routing and software now. I'm really glad I found your channel.
Agreed that the new 828 seems cut down. I'm unsure if it's an actual design/direction change by MOTU or if it's a "after so many years we just need to get something to market!" compromise while their Japanese chip manufacturer works out their problems (AKM Semiconductor had a major plant fire in 2020 and ongoing supply chain and backlog issues since).
@@davidg5898 Right on, If you run into any issues drop a question in the forums. Always happy to troubleshoot.
Awesome to see some appreciate this in 2020. Bought this brand new in 2006 and I can’t get rid of it. It’s a really decent piece of gear! Wish I could convert it to USB-C. Lol 👍🏽
Need to use this again
It's great to see a live demonstration of Motu on Linux. I've been hovering over this for years but each time I tried it took days and I couldn't get anything to work. I'm wondering now if it's time to have another go.
I needed Motu Traveler, 896MKIII Reaper AND VSTi Pianos.
Anyone know if this is viable?
Thanks for the video very informative!!!!!
Hi Great Demo, May I kindly ask if you could help or advise me on how I can connect my MOTU 828mk2 USB 2.0 to my Macbook (The White One) Mid 2010. As I have installed the drivers with the CD provided but to no avail, can you kindly help? This ould be most appreciated.
1:29 SMPTE (“simp tee” or “sim tee”, depending on how you feel about the mid-word “p”) is a time code standard for video.
Yes.
How do i do the wiring for external compressor
increible es posible con LUBUNTU y Motu 828 original?
Gracias!
Hi ! I run my 828 MK II FW on ubuntustudio 20.10 how did you get the real names for the 828 ports ? I only have playback_1, playback_2 etc. Thanks
Sounds like you are using the ASLA drivers.
@@linuxgamecast You're right... I switched to FFADO driver and it is much more stable !

Hey nice video. Wondering, do you know how to setup DA adat output as standalone mode ? I’m having difficulties since I can’t connect the FW.
"DA adat output as standalone mode" Huh? Try that again.
@@linuxgamecast I mean just the Analog out via Adat.
Analog out via Adat? Are you asking if you can use the 828MKII as a standalone AD converter that outputs via ADAT? If that's the question, yes, you should be able to set a custom mix using FFADO mixer in Linux. Doing that without connecting the 828 to a PC might be possible but you will need to consult the manual.
@@linuxgamecast would this work for a 828mkIII?

It's nice to see what the hormone monster from Big Mouth does on his off-time.
Is it still worth buying this interface in 2024?
Is this interface compatible with macOS Monterey 12?
Question for any Linux users, especially music producers, with experience using MOTU interfaces:
How do any of the MOTU UltraLight series offerings stack up to this 828 MKII or the Traveller MKI on Linux?
I'm a music producer veteran but a Linux noob (I'm still in the planning stages of a Linux build).
I'm looking for lowest possible latency, stable clock, and flexible connectivity like optical in/out, old-school MIDI DIN jacks, minimum 8 channels of TRS ins and outs, etc... and it's always nice if the manufacturer has good on-going support of their legacy hardware, as MOTU seems to.
The UltraLights look nice and small, so I'm curious about them, but I'm just looking for options to add to the 828 and Traveller which are currently on my list of possible interfaces. Small is nice but definitely not my biggest priority.
According to linuxaudio.org only the original UltraLight MKI is supported by Linux, but I'd like to hear from users themselves.
Any suggestions or warnings would be much appreciated, cheers!
The MOTU interfaces I own are listed here. linuxgamecast.com/linux-compatible-audio-interfaces/
@@linuxgamecast thanks; do keep these videos coming. I've learned a lot since finding the traveller video, and I often find myself confused trying to follow a Linux forum discussion. Here you talk like a producer, which I understand.
Driver link please
cool af
How do you connect this to the computer?
You can find instruction on page 17 of the manual.
Someday you'll use the sumpting else sync. 😂
I have a question I grabbed on of theese at a garage sell.....it doesn't have a USB slot so how can I get it to communicate with my modern computer
PCIe Firewire 400 card. If you're on a laptop, no idea.
a cheap ThinkPad T410 can be fitted with FireWire card from ebay for not much
@@Cashlack laptop or no
Does 828mk2 support M1 big sur ?
No idea.
@@linuxgamecast i tired. It didn't work. All thanks to Bug Sur.
@@mklouis Sorry for the late reply, but I just discovered this channel and this awesome "Interfacing Linux" series.
The incompatibility is due to Thunderbolt4, not macOS.
TB4, officially, is not backward compatible with TB2/TB. Due to the Thunderspy exploit, TB4's security protocol was changed in a way that excludes TB2/TB devices. When TB4 first came out it was fully backward compatible, but firmware and driver updates since have killed the TB2/TB compatibility (and thus, any Firewire compatibility that relies on a FW-->TB adapter). The only TB2/TB devices that seem to still work with TB4 are some, but not all, hard drives and a handful of cameras are recognized as storage devices.
As for macOS, my MOTU 828mkII interfaces work perfectly fine on Monterey and Ventura (both after Big Sur) on a TB2 Macbook Pro (using a FW-->FW800 cable plugged into a FW800-->TB2 adapter) and a TB3 Macbook Pro (using the FW-->FW800-->TB2 cable/adapter setup plugged into a TB2-->TB3 adapter).
My previous desktop PC had TB3, and the 828mkII devices worked fine on Windows, too, using the FW-->FW800-->TB2-->TB3 daisy chain.
On my new desktop with TB4, however, no adapters would make them work. Messing with hardware settings, I could get the MOTUs to be seen but the hardware just wouldn't handshake to be usable. So I got a Syba FW card and all is hunky-dory with that.
That said, even if you did get an 828mkII recognized by an Apple Silicon Mac, who knows if MOTU's x86-based drivers for those legacy products would even work properly.
Can I use this with windows 10 for Abelton?
Thanks in advance
Microsoft has officially discontinued support for Firewire (IEEE1394) with the introduction of Windows 10.
@@linuxgamecast Thanks for getting back.
Is there any way around this?
@@djlaze1972 hi Eric.. did you manage a workaround ?
Maybe. I’m trying to download windows 8 using virtual box to run it . I’ve tried everything and I’m about to give up. I have 2 of these that are now paperweights if this doesn’t work
@@linuxgamecastOddly enough, Microsoft brought Firewire support back with Windows 11.
With Win10, you can install a legacy driver to get IEEE1394 controllers recognized (Syba's website has the driver under the Download tab of those products' pages).
In Win11, FW controllers are natively recognized and just work with no additional driver or setup required.
But, as I mentioned in a different comment, if you're trying to use adapters to connect Firewire to a Thunderbolt 4 port, it won't work no matter what due to changes made in TB4's security protocol.
If you're connecting to a TB3 or TB2 port, however, it'll still work if you go into the Windows Thunderbolt control panel and give permission to the devices. Apple's FW800-->TB2 and TB2-->TB3 adapters seem to work most reliably for those scenarios.
Good interface if you got mac or amd , intel will give you problems wiv it
I have the usb version , ubuntu is not seeing my interface.
I don't believe the USB version is supported under Linux.
@@linuxgamecast I have a Focusrite Saffire 6.... same problem. At least my korg kronos is working out of the box.
Correct. An interface has to be USB class compliant to work with Linux OOTB.
The Firewire version works under Linux.
too bad mine is USB version of the 828 :(((((
