Due to recent adverse weather the West Coast Mainline causing substantial damage to a viaduct the line has been closed north of Carlisle. As well as this again due to severe flooding the Highland Mainline north of Perth towards Inverness has also been shut for several weeks while repairs take place. So with all these problems taking place Caledonian Sleeper have been left with quite a task getting their trains to & from the Scottish highlands. They've been diverting down the East Coast Mainline but during the weekend of filming (9th & 10th Jan) the line between Darlington & Newcastle was planned to be closed for essential engineering so Virgin East Coast services would be diverting via the Durham coast & through Sunderland station. With all this trouble and the fact they had sleeper sets stuck north and not enough in London the highland sleeper was cancelled this night (Friday 8th) and passengers like us were told to join the lowland sleeper to Edinburgh for a replacement bus further north. Well instead of that we thought it'd be a better idea to stay on the sleeper through to Glasgow for more mileage behind the Freightliner 90!
Some beautiful snowy & foggy scenes across Scotland as we make our way across from East to West. Also not to mention some incredible arcing coming from the pantograph of 90045! This often happens in sub zero temperatures where moisture & frost form on the overhead wires, creates some incredible visual effects.
This is quite a rare move, the sleeper services usually divide at Carstairs so to have a class 90 hauling all 16 coaches of the sleeper from Edinburgh all the way across to Glasgow is something that really doesn't happen often.
Thanks for watching

AC Sparkies under icy wires are always spectacular!
Stunning winter scenery as well. Excellent footage.
The more I watch this, the more incredible it seems that all that arcing doesn't eventually cut the pantograph in half! Surely the contact strips can't last long under these conditions?
Enjoyed the film, and those arcing shots were amazing, THANKS MATT
I used to work the Caledonian Sleepers from Edinburgh Waverley. Brings back memories.
Lovely video! I always think the journey is better than the destination.
I can remember when growing up in the1950 s that steam was prevalent.
Pretty spectacular arcing shots!
Great Video, must have been frosty for the Pan to spark like that. Nice.
Great video I enjoyed that. Thanks for the upload
great footage.pity you cant open a compartment window and film in a bit more comfort.....loved the shots of the snow getting blown up and the train hurries along.
fantastic frosty early morning! Interesting to see mist but enough wind to turn the wind turbine.
really good video. i am from edinburgh. the trains and road have been a mess with this weather. plus hst virgin east coast were not going to aberdeen due to flooding on the line past dundee. they are going up now i seen one going north earlier today.
great video
Two questions:
1) How long did the journey take?
2) Just how cold did you get when leaning out of the window for all that time?!
+zleithkinjacob Journey from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central is just over an hour. I was wearing gloves and just had my hand out the window, I wasn't leaning out really so only my hands got cold.
Love the sparking pant!!
nice trip !! Many thanks sharing it..From SWFrance
Nice journey :)
Nice Video how long did the journey take:)
+Trainspotter 11 It took just over an hour from Edinburgh across to Glasgow.
Great Video Though!
18:38 Is that 67 going in forward with its tail lights on?
Brill.
great vid, thanks :)
The Arriva Trains Wales 67 looks pretty lost at Edinburgh! Haha
looking at length of the sleeper when it was going round the corners I'm guessing it had the full 16 carriages on it Cuz it did look quite long
Enjoyed! Ü
So is that Pendo at Polmadie stuck there until they can get the line reopened, or can they go via Edinburgh?
Another pan head that needs changing! Great video.
Some tricky camera work , how did you do that?
Regards
Robert
+Ocean City Try and hold the camera as steady as possible out the window without it getting carried away! :-P
+rachaelmatt cold hands
So that's what 25kV looks like. Kewl.

If you edit this video down, you could show the pantograph arcing as a cutaway low-angle camera shot! Zooming in and out is not the way the professionals would have film this!
