  • Prospects is a British television comedy drama series that was written by Alan Janes and originally shown on Channel 4 in 1986. Created by Euston Films who had a pedigree of producing successful, gritty drama such as The Sweeney and Minder, it followed the exploits of two East End 'geezer' characters - Jimmy 'Pincy' Pince played by Gary Olsen and Billy 'Bill' Pearson played by Brian Bovell and their trials and tribulations of making a living in London's Isle of Dogs.
Comprising 12 episodes Prospects - with a comic slant, dealt with many of the major issues affecting British society at the height of the "Thatcherite" '80's including unemployment, crime, poverty, regeneration, social change and racism.
The shows featured many actors, some known like Ken Jones who played 'Horrible Ives' in Porridge and some unknown who went on to find fame elsewhere. These include: Billy Hartman 'Terry Woods' in Emmerdale.
Prospects gained a cult following and ratings wise it performed well above expectation for Channel 4. At that time Channel Four received a large subsidy from the rival commercial network ITV in exchange for the right to sell airtime; this gave ITV a significant input into the management of the station. The success of Prospects and the fact that it was produced by a subsidiary of the ITV network's largest station Thames Television meant it was moved to a 9pm prime-time repeat slot on ITV in the Spring/Summer of 1987. This fuelled rumours that the network wanted to develop Prospects into a long-running comedy drama series. However despite seeing potential, sadly ITV declined the opportunity to develop it beyond the original first series and a great 'cult' show was doomed.
    Prospects - Episode 1 - The P to S Day
Billy and Pincy set up a dating agency and burglar alarm company but as ever seem to spend their time getting out of scrapes.

As a kid who grew up in the 80s I love anything from that time period and the late 70s that was filmed in the UK..just the nostalgia of the scenery etc.

TV shows like this (and The Sweeney, Minder etc.) serve as a great visual reminder of London, from an era we hazily remember but took very few photos of back in those days. When you see everyday scenes of London from those days which connect with your subconscious recollections, it is mag ical. I loved Prospects, it chimes with that ducking & diving mentaility working class people like me had then, and was represented in Only Fools & Horses too. People like these two, Del Boy, Arthur Daley, characters at the Winchester Club, etc really existed. Remember the hooky gear that used to be sold around the pubs in those days, we had aspirations to make a few quid and blow it on a good night out. Simple pleasures and lots of fun - I miss those days very much.

Say Bermondsey high street for example had 12 pubs on it? 12? nowadays all disgusting flat conversions or not there at all or worst of all swanky coffee shops. London has changed unrecognizable to the 70s/80s/90s where i was born grew up and lived and worked till i joined the Army in early 1990s and left the area. Went back years later but hated it and moved out to Essex.

Top lads, loved it,still have the TV Times with them on the cover!!! Started work in 86 at 19 ....I chalked Prospects on the wall out the back at work, loved the theme, fucking hated factory work...I'm on my 2nd marriage and after 35 years of nonsense,I'm taking early retirement and doing something a bit easier and no shifts....bought it all back, think we have a bit of these 2 in us somewhere

if memory serves me correct, this went out on a Wednesday night at eight o'clock - I know this because I didn't have a telly in my room at the time. These days that would be sacrilege to most kids but it never did me any harm. If there was something on later that I wanted to watch, then stayed up for it and there weren't any fucking mobile phones in those days. Again, it never really bothered me but you try depriving a child of a telly until they're sixteen, then that's a criminal offence (she writes sarcastically), not on.

A truly tremendous series...everything about it was 1st class..from the late great gary olsen, brian bovell to all of the others actors..mike savage, eddie tagoe etc..as a 15 yr old boy watching this changed a lot of my ways of thinking...i was also a child born under the dirty fucking tory scums cloud...no work ..hope or prospects...its not mentioned or even shown for some reason and i can NOT believe it...to me its one of the greatest, funniest and saddest programmes ever made...it should be shown in schools just to show how bad things were under that twat thatcher and every rat tory....a true masterpiece...rip..gary 👍

True it is, I believe it don't matter who's in goverment, they all against us the general public.
They're all scum. Some worse than others. Every party has had a female leader except.. labour and frankly they pure nutters these days.. any rights we have can be taken away in a blink of an eye by our masters, like now under lockdown. Most just think they doing it for our wellbeing..
It's all an illusion.. to keep control.

@@desertmandan123 I had an old portable ITT, it must have lasted 15 years. Great picture and the sound quality was brilliant through the headphone socket which got me round the night time ban before a school day. I took it everywhere. Later when me and the ex got a new bigger one for the living room the ITT went upstairs and I found a model which had a switch whereby you pressed it and it changed from colour to black and white, great money saver in case the goons came a knocking but they never did. They always used to look at me strangely when I renewed the license at the post office because I was quite way out in those days.
Simpler indeed, that is the word. I now know what my grandparents were going on about with all these 'distractions'. Get rid of most of that and they could do away with carbon taxes. But we know they have no such plans because we've been around the block a few times.
