    Wow! The place has changed a lot since I was there for over 14 months in 1964, 1965! It looks like most of the buildings are gone including my barracks near the hangar. We always enjoyed the gooneys. I worked in the weather office on the second floor of the hangar. There were some beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I can look back fondly now but wasn't enjoying it so much at the time, being 21 and missing home. Good times, though.

      I lived there in 69 and 70 my dad was a postal clerk, I remember going up Main hill it was 12 feet above sea level if I recall correctly I got to go in the base of the radar towers which made an incredible amount of noise , we use to check out a Bayliner and go to the nearest island for picnics it was called Eastern Island no inhabitants or fresh water . My greatest memories were the clear clear water . Nice to see the place again .

      How did they manage to land aircraft without having like 1000 bird strikes on each approach?

    Thanks for making that video. As an airline pilot that uses Midway as an ETOPS alternate, it was very informative and gave me an insight on the facilities there. Good job.

    I lived there as a kid late 50's. Things look a lot different, but 60 years might do that.

    Love the "Flammable" HAZMAT sticker on the bathroom door. I stopped for fuel once at Midway. Have some great photos (USAF C-130 Loadmaster). We tried to take off, the firefighters said that we were crazy. Hit a "goony bird" on take off roll, stopped, let the FD clean up the mess, then tried again. Made it to Japan in our window. Thank you Midway FD. This was Christmas time, 2000.

    Omg......I would love to revisit my very first of many Naval assignments over my 20 year career. Crash and Fire department 1980-1981. Isolated duty was truly an eye opening experience, and Midway Island is something I’ll always remember, aside from an amazing historical landmark. 😎😇🙏⚓️⚓️👍

    Why you not in the down town area near the barracks,messhaul and the PX. Even the pier. I was station there in 1962 thru 1964 with airborne early warning sq. Be nice to see more of the island now. Loved that island.

    Really cool video, thanks for sharing. Wish I could go and visit the island just to say I've been there and to explore. I have friends who were in the Navy who were stationed there a LONG time ago. I spent 20 years in the Navy but never made it to Midway. Anyways, thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Been there during the early 80's. Knew men that served there when families were permitted. The Gooney Birds and Fairy Turns are amazing. The waters incredible. Filled with history.

    Well if you accidentally run over an adult, pick it up, defeather it and cook it over an open fire and it tastes fairly good. A golf cart is the best way to get around the island . The Operations building was where the CO of the base was when it was a Naval and Marine Corps Air Station as I remember the runways were 7,000 and 10,000 at Henderson Memorial Air Station at the time, I wonder if they still are. They should expand the island and the mains at Henderson in case they need to land an aircraft that can't stop in time either because the pilot made an error, bad brakes, weather, etc (my guess would be a combined interservice construction program (Army Corps of Engineers, Navy Seabees, etc working together to accomplish the task).

    So you mean to tell us we pay millions for jets that have leaky gas tanks? And were supposed to believe that's normal?

    • @spencerb311
      @spencerb311 4 місяці тому

      The tanks are designed to operate at a certain temperature. They have built in gaps for thermal expansion. When they’re at operating temperature they don’t leak at all.

      @@jamesholden6142. Humans only think we “own the place.” It is impossible to truly own the planet.* Like all species, we are temporary. There is only one thing that is truly special about us, and that is how we will end, since we have evolved to the point that we can terminate ourselves. If we follow the usual law of ecological succession, we will die out due to overpopulation and pollution. Of course, being such an “advanced species” we may kill ourselves off with nuclear weapons. Since there is such arrogance in our species, I imagine that we will terminate ourselves, and possibly most life on earth, before we overpopulate and die off.
      *If you are a religious person, you should know that God gave humans “dominion over the earth,” a stewardship. He did not give us ownership. Big difference.
